what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

22k on a family trip to Orlando last year. Worth every penny. Told ourselves during lockdown we would do it once we could . Won't do it again though but really enjoyed the 2 weeks not watching what we were spending

DareDevil223 · 05/03/2025 16:54

Our gorgeous Blue British Shorthair kitten last year. I was very sad after losing my beloved old boy and our other cat was sad and lonely too.

He is the softest, most good natured and beautiful cat ever and worth every penny of his not inconsiderable price tag.

littlemissprosseco · 05/03/2025 16:56

An artichoke light!! A drunken purchase!
It’s followed me in every house move throughout my life( and there have been many, for many reasons) I still absolutely love it. Wherever I live, it will always have a home

Books from the Folio Society. I bought 12 books / sets in the last year, so have spent around £1000 on pretty books.

Well I’d never heard of the Folio society- your post may work out quite expensive for me!

EvilNextDoor · 05/03/2025 16:57

My Porsche 🤣

A pain in the backside when it goes wrong and expensive to fix but I love it

valder · 05/03/2025 16:59

Nothing too extravagant here really and I can't think of anything I'd really want to splurge on right now. I could afford to, so am looking for inspiration!

The only thing I can think of is First Class air tickets, but I don't go long haul anymore now. I'm not into cars (just has to be reliable and automatic), or handbags, or shoes, or clothes. Again, I like nice bags and clothes etc. but never buy designer or high end, I don't think I'd get the value out of them. Not into gizmos or electronics apart from a decent phone, but get the latest but one iPhone from my friendly phoneshop in our town. LEGITIMATELY! What else is there? Can't think!

I'm not tight or miserable either. Probably spend too much on family and going out and hols, but nothing I'd call Extravagant like the Ritz either. Oh dear.

I’ve started buying original artwork, landscapes of a beautiful place I have holidayed with DS and that he loves. I’m hoping he’ll remember our gorgeous holidays when he looks at them after I’m pushing up daisies (and they might even increase in value!)

Pool table that’s also a dining table. Gets used as a pool table most days and a dining table when we need to seat more than 6. It’s a beautiful piece of furniture which hopefully we’ll have forever.

Which one did you get?

Praying4Peace · 05/03/2025 17:01

ExpressCheckout · 05/03/2025 16:13

I've just spent £1159 p.p. on a holiday, this is loads for me and I'm trying not to get buyer's remorse 😅

Bloody brilliant!

PreciousRighteousTeacher · 05/03/2025 17:03

@Huckyfell was it worth it? I have been considering getting one.

Mudkipper · 05/03/2025 17:04

Fancy coffee machine. I wouldn’t be without it.

Plantmother71 · 05/03/2025 17:07

Trip on the orient express from London to Venice. Then travelled around Italy for a few weeks in style. It is a proper bucket list experience and it’s like staying in a precious museum, and a lot of the scenery (through the alps) is stunning!

To say it’s a bucket list trip though…. I am saving to go again. It’s like one night with meals and some drinks (not all - there’s a bar) and it was over 5k when we went. Think the price has increased.

Im not flash at all and it felt really weird but lovely doing that holiday and I enjoyed getting very dressed up too! 🤩

Mumofyellows · 05/03/2025 15:48

Horse 😂

And me! I have three... I only bought one of them, the other two were "gifted"... Bought horse was an extravagant spend, because she had a field accident just after backing and is now non ridden 🙄
ETA @HeadNorth she's part Arab too! Never got as far as getting her a proper saddle, these awkward shaped beasts make for £££ saddles!

Paganpentacle · 05/03/2025 17:08

HeadNorth · 05/03/2025 16:05

My gorgeous Arab horse - and his even more expensive saddle!

Ditto!
Still got him 15 years later so money well spent I reckon.

Proudestmumofone1 · 05/03/2025 17:08

@krustykittens we’ve also got a pool dining table - it’s amazing!!! We bought it brand new but straight after saw loads on Facebook marketplace and eBay so definitely search around as they were going for a tenth of the price! X

MasterBeth · 05/03/2025 17:08

How much do horses cost?

technosausage · 05/03/2025 17:09

Motor home and festivals in the summer months.

HellsBalls · 05/03/2025 17:09

A cocker spaniel and an e-bike.
The spaniel is costing tens of thousands (dog walker) over his lifetime.

SnippySnappy · 05/03/2025 17:10

£1500 coffee machine that will make almost anything you can get in Costa/Starbucks without loads of faff. It's self cleaning and all that jazz too. Got it at the start of lockdown with the money we'd set aside for going on holiday with.
It's used multiple times a day by the whole household, I adore it.

givemespringtime · 05/03/2025 17:11

A greenhouse Grin

TooTiredToType77 · 05/03/2025 17:11

whirlyhead · 05/03/2025 16:00

An Aston Martin. Don’t have it anymore but it did keep its value well!

That's good to hear. My husband just bought his dream car (10 yr old Vantage). His Christmas gift was an extravagant car wash kit from me 😂

Huckyfell · 05/03/2025 17:11

PreciousRighteousTeacher · 05/03/2025 17:03

@Huckyfell was it worth it? I have been considering getting one.

We've quite a lot of lawns and I reckon it will save me 3 plus hours a week in growing season, so worth it yes. Taken me years and years to bite the bullet..

ChaosDream · 05/03/2025 17:11

I have booked a weeks holiday for DD and I to the canaries. I feel like we both deserve it after a crappy couple of years. It was a lot of money for me but I don't regret it for a minute and can't wait to spend time together.

WateryBottle · 05/03/2025 17:12

My Wig and Pen fountain pen, looks absolutely
gorgeous and writes like a dream!

PreciousRighteousTeacher · 05/03/2025 17:14

Thanks @Huckyfell same here with multiple lawns will start some research.
