Need advice on clothes I want returned to me

Pjsandpringles · 05/03/2025 10:04

I was on holiday last month and during my trip I got friendly with someone. When I left the hotel I realised I had left a few items of clothing in my hotel room. I messaged my "friend" to tell her how stupid I had been and also messaged the hotel to arrange to have them sent back to me. She offered to collect them and send them when she got back. I thought this would be easier since they would be in the same country and I'd get them quicker.

It's now a month later and she still hasn't sent them and isn't responding to my messages. Any advice on what I should do?

I'm not sure there's anything you can do, have you checked with the hotel that they've been collected?

DappledThings · 05/03/2025 10:08

I'd chalk it up to experience, accept you're not getting them back and move on

PiastriThePastry · 05/03/2025 10:09

Just accept you’re not getting them back. Sometimes cock ups happen.

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/03/2025 10:10

Check with the hotel first. If the hotel still has them, they will presumably send them on. Unfortunately if your new so-called friend has collected them, you are stuck if she has decided to keep them.. Go on another holiday and call round her house..?

ladymammalade · 05/03/2025 10:12

Do you think she just forgot to collect them? I'd contact the hotel and ask, just in case they still have them.

Pjsandpringles · 05/03/2025 10:16

She has them and said she would send them. I'm not writing off over £1000 worth of clothes.

I'm not sure you have any other option.

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 05/03/2025 10:18

Looks like you're going to have to go get them off her.

£1000 worth of shipping internationally freight sounds like a fucking pain in the arse to be honest.

pandapopadance · 05/03/2025 10:18

Holiday insurance?
How did you leave £1000 of clothes behind?!

Jellycatspyjamas · 05/03/2025 10:18

How on earth do you forget £1000 worth of clothes, that would be my entire holiday wardrobe. Practically speaking if she isn’t replying to you she’s not going to send them back. Do you have an address for her?

Movinghouseatlast · 05/03/2025 10:20

If she won't return them the only thing you could do is a Small Claim. This only works if you have her full postal address.

You firstly send a letter before action giving her a deadline. If she doesn't respond you then start the court proceedings by filling in a form. You will need evidence that she has the clothes, so text messages/ emails etc.

Citizens Advice has a section on the website explaining the process and with template letters.

It was 3 dresses and a jumper. She is in the same country as me. Well, she's in the UK. I had packed the night before and planned on wearing one of the dresses that night so left them in the wardrobe. I wasn't feeling well so just wore jeans and completely forgot to empty the wardrobe the next day. I dont have her address but I have her business page and work details on Facebook. I dont want to go down the petty bitch route so I'm trying to find a way to get them back without calling her out publicly.

This is on you sorry. Where was your due dilligence? Asking some random person you met on holiday to go to the hotel and get £1000k worth of clothes for you? Who does that?

Is she the same size as you lol?

beasmithwentworth · 05/03/2025 10:26

How far away do you live from each other. If not too far and not too much hassle I would be saying I'm planning a flying visit. It would be lovely to see you. Let's have a catch up and I can pick up my clothes too etc

Completelyjo · 05/03/2025 10:27

This is a complete stranger, you probably aren’t getting them back. To be honest the hotel probably wouldn’t have bothered with the admin of trying to return these to you anyway.

VenusClapTrap · 05/03/2025 10:27

£1000? Are we talking 2 or 3 designer items, or an entire wheelie bag full of lower value items? We once accidentally left a wheelie bag behind, and were going to write it off until we worked out the actual value. A bagful adds up, even if it’s nothing fancy.

It cost a lot to have it shipped, but it was still worth it. The AirBnB owner complained mightily about sending it on because it was a total arse for her to organise (remote Scottish island), until we transferred her an extra chunk of money on top of the shipping cost to compensate her for her trouble. It still took her months and she did ignore our messages for a while.

If this friend is not responding, she’s either decided she can’t be arsed or is planning your keep the items. Absolutely nothing you can do, unfortunately - unless you have her address and fancy driving over there.

I would do this.

Check if she's put them on Vinted

She offered. We were staying in the same hotel. Clearly I think people can be decent. Obviously I was wrong. Me being wrong doesn't excuse theft

Ah ok so three items aren’t that much of a faff to post. Looks like temptation got the better of her. That’s a shame.

Maybe she’s busy. She may have a life and/or have forgotten. Like you did! Contact her and ask when you can visit to catch up and collect your clothes.

StumbleInTheDebris · 05/03/2025 10:33

The friend lives in the country you were visiting? Why did you think it'd be quicker for a random person to send them to you rather than a hotel which presumably has a procedure to follow for left items?

Maybe it's a right hassle sorting it all out and she can't be bothered.

bomalan · 05/03/2025 10:33

Unfortunately she probably realised the value of them and sold them on :/.

Or was she the same size as you and has kept them?
