Non US owned chocolate - for Easter Eggs

131 replies

RestitutionGranted · 04/03/2025 15:13

I’d like to support UK, European, Mexican or Canadian industry, not US, when buying my Easter eggs this year.

I’m thinking either Chococo or Tony’s Chocolonely but any other ideas welcomed. If it’s relevant I’m buying for 9 & 11 year olds, plus a clutch of young adults 18-24.

Hi OP

Why won't you buy from M&S? Just curious as I don't know the reason.

That's a shame hotel chocolat are now owned by Mars.

M & S continue to advertise on GBNews which promotes misogyny and racism, amongst other stuff. They are funding hate.

There were no Lidl Easter eggs in our local store yesterday. Just some Cadbury's apparently. Either they've been bought already or not been put on the shelves. I'll keep trying.

I looked at their Instagram and they are preparing for Easter (chocolate bunnies etc), but haven’t got stock out yet. I think they are doing Mother’s Day first. As they are small, they don’t do products very far in advance for seasonal stuff (unlike Tesco who have had Easter eggs pretty much since December 26th!) 😂

Another vote for Cutter and Squidge My lovely DH buys me this every year. It is £££££ though.

@CaptainMyCaptain

No you're wrong. Everything isn't political. End of.

Why are you posting on a thread that you have no regard for.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/03/2025 13:02

CaptBirdsEar · 08/03/2025 08:19

@CaptainMyCaptain

Oh dear.

It's called personal choice as to where you buy anything from.

No one has denied that. You could even choose not to buy any Easter Eggs.

Easter eggs in my local Aldi yesterday

Edited

But I wanted the EU made Lidl ones. Do you know where the Aldi ones are made?

A quick Google tells me Moser Roth - Aldi’s premium chocolate brand is made in Germany and Dairyfine its other chocolate brand is manufactured in the UK.

Salcombe Dairy do gorgeous eggs and other chocolate - and ice cream! - and get MASSIVE bonus points because they're safe for people with nut allergies, which I have.

Thank you. I'll try there.

Aldi chocolate is ace. Really really nice.

although I shouldn’t say that I need to get a pretzel one for my dh

SeaBaseAlpha · 08/03/2025 14:18

Yes, Hotel Chocolat are now owned by Mars, but 95% of the chocolates are still made in Cambridgeshire! Seems a bit harsh to threaten the livelihoods of everyone working here just because of a buy out.

BourbonsAreOverated · 08/03/2025 14:19

Had to get an egg for someone I’m seeing this week. Was heartened to have to go to three shops as all that was left was cadburys, a few small nestle eggs and a few Lindt eggs.
I know cadburys is normally the big one so the shops may have over ordered but seemed telling where the gaps were

madaffodil · 08/03/2025 14:38

Aldi. Their chocolate is sourced via Germany.

Plenty of people don’t care who’s pockets are being lined with their purchases so I hardly think a few people boycotting US products will have an impact on the workers in Cambs.

Tbh I’m not a fan of Hotel Chocolat anyway.

Lidl and aldi have v good chocolate products including Easter eggs.
They are made in Europe.
And European choc is much better quality than American anyway imo.

TabbyM · 04/03/2025 15:44

@RestitutionGranted thanks for posting that back about Divine! I had noticed they stopped doing milk chocolate eggs a couple of years ago as I could only find dark eggs in Tesco and local health food shops but I had assumed that was not having lots of shops to choose from in my local area.

Can anyone recommend fair-trade and preferably plastic free eggs both milk and dark? I believe Tonys are a weird shape too. Do Green & Blacks still do them?

Waitrose own label. Plastic free and fair trade in all types.

iamnotalemon · 08/03/2025 16:41

@RestitutionGranted

Ah thanks for explaining. Not in UK so wasn't sure.

@TulipDay yup always a handy signifier of who to interact with on some threads. The more they include the further to stay away.
