Non US owned chocolate - for Easter Eggs

RestitutionGranted · 04/03/2025 15:13

I’d like to support UK, European, Mexican or Canadian industry, not US, when buying my Easter eggs this year.

I’m thinking either Chococo or Tony’s Chocolonely but any other ideas welcomed. If it’s relevant I’m buying for 9 & 11 year olds, plus a clutch of young adults 18-24.

Because I can. It's a free world.

I think Hotel Chocolat is British owned.

Nope, owned by an American company.

They are the same company that own Yorkshire Tea!

Butler's Chocolate made in Dublin. It's delicious. They deliver to the UK. Also do kids treats like chocolate bunnies. Oh, and if you are visiting Dublin you can do a tour of the factory and make your own chocolate treat. They also do vegan chocolate too.

Do you happen to know about Aldi?

Aldi in Europe has chocolate from Germany / EU and they also have a copy of Tony's Chocoloney-type / Fair trade chocolate. It seems the UK stores have these products, too.

Their UK website has a category of "Gift, Occasion and Boxed Chocolate"; the easter products are listed there, too.

Did anyone boycott American chocolate when Biden removed all women’s sex-based rights, women were being raped by men in female prisons and girls were being paralysed by males in their sport? Funny how virtue-signalling is always so selective

Nestlé are Swiss owned and much of their production is in the UK.

People make choices about where they spend their money every day. I don't suppose the amount I will spend on Easter eggs will affect the US economy in any way but I'm choosing to support the EU. It might be helpful to see it as where you do spend your money rather than where you don't.

How about Ferrero Rocher and Thornton’s? Both Italian owned I believe.

TabbyM · 11/03/2025 15:36

@ThinkAboutItTomorrow thanks but no Waitrose within 200 miles I'm afraid.

I think Hotel Chocolat is British owned.

It was taken over by Mars so is now American owned

Roisheen · 29/03/2025 13:26

From my research the only companies are Lindt and Nestle who also own Rowntree. Hotel Chocolat was taken oven by Mars and Cadbury was taken over by Kraft.

PickAChew · 29/03/2025 16:08

There is also Ferrero, who produce kinder eggs as well as stuff with their own name.

McVities isn't strictly chocolate but make delicious chocolatey things and their top level parent company, over and above United biscuits, isn't American and also owns the Godiva brand, though I haven't seen them over here for a long time.

Caspianberg · 29/03/2025 16:17

Lindt rabbits. They are also only wrapped in foil, so no excess packaging.

PickAChew · 29/03/2025 17:01

Lindt also make their own creme egg sized filled eggs. I've seen them in Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

Urm Cadbury

Audrey's Chocolate shop in Hove

AFrankExchangeofViews · 30/03/2025 11:22

Booja booja chocolate is amazing, vegan in a good way, very high cocoa solids, tastes like the ludicrously priced French Maison du Chocolate (best chocolate in the world imho). Made in Norfolk.

Pembrokeshire company Wickedly Welsh Chocolate do a chocolate dragon egg called Bryn! They also have lots of other lovely non-egg chocolate - hot cross bun chocolate bar, anyone?

www.wickedlywelsh.co.uk/products/bryn-the-dragon-egg/

I’m so happy I read through this thread and found your recommendation. The dragon egg/hammer is charming and looks delicious and the bars of chocolate also look amazing. I have bought all my Easter gifts. Thank you!

KittenPause · 31/03/2025 08:37

@CandidHedgehog

oh bugger I looked it up as well but clearly didn’t bother to deep dive enough

Oh and they shut a factory down after lying they wouldn’t.

No more Cadbury’s in this house after Easter and current eggs are demolished

I hope Tony’s Chocolate is UK owned because their chocolate is yummy

we are also big Lindt fans in this house

KittenPause · 31/03/2025 08:39

Tony’s is Dutch. That’s fine by me
