Non US owned chocolate - for Easter Eggs

131 replies

RestitutionGranted · 04/03/2025 15:13

I’d like to support UK, European, Mexican or Canadian industry, not US, when buying my Easter eggs this year.

I’m thinking either Chococo or Tony’s Chocolonely but any other ideas welcomed. If it’s relevant I’m buying for 9 & 11 year olds, plus a clutch of young adults 18-24.

Lidl own brand, product of eu and tastes better than Cadbury etc

Do you happen to know about Aldi?

You would probably do best to support your local independent chocolate shop

I don't live in a place that has an independent chocolate shop and, with 4 eggs to buy for grandchildren, it would probably be beyond my budget anyway. It will be Lidl for me. I always buy my own chocolate from Lidl, the 85% cocoa solids one, it's the best.

Pembrokeshire company Wickedly Welsh Chocolate do a chocolate dragon egg called Bryn! They also have lots of other lovely non-egg chocolate - hot cross bun chocolate bar, anyone?

Comments like this always baffle me as to what the poster thinks the majority of the UK is like, it's reminiscent of Blue Peter telling 10 year old me to just go to my local haberdashery. I grew up in a village in Wales with a post office/video shop, a Spar and a takeaway. My local haberdashers was probably in Manchester.

When I googled chocolate shop near me the first one that comes up is a vape shop that also sells American sweets followed by Thornton's which closed down years ago followed by Morrisons and the other supermarkets.
The nearest chocolatier I can find is nearly two hours away.

I'll stick to Lindt from the supermarket.

I live in quite a skanky town and there is a home business chocolate shop.

You can usually get Italian Easter eggs (with the fancy wrapping) in delis. Might be nice for the adults. Kinder ones with the toys for the kids.

LindaLeggings · 07/03/2025 10:25

@BobnLen
Lucky! We have mostly vape shops, barbers, charity shops and B&M type shops. We do have loads of lovely independent cafes and restaurants though. Do you have a haberdashery?!

I had to google as it's not something I generally use and would probably try Hobbycraft which is on the retail park in the first instance but we do appear to have a haberdashery in the high street. I don't live in a posh or tourist area, in fact my town has been mentioned on MN in the not very nice category on threads for places to live.

There is a chocolate brand that makes the chocolates for Fortnums called Audrey’s that have been around since 1948 ( not cheap as you would imagine )

audreyschocolates.co.uk/

While searching for them I came across this London brand.

Our haberdashery closed sadly

Lidl's chocolate is manufactured in Germany from cocoa grown in Africa. They have a fully documented supply chain. Some of it does not contain palm oil either, but you will need to check the label.

I love Lidl chocolate. I am glad to hear it is still ok to buy.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/03/2025 07:28

There were no Lidl Easter eggs in our local store yesterday. Just some Cadbury's apparently. Either they've been bought already or not been put on the shelves. I'll keep trying.

iamnotalemon · 08/03/2025 07:56

Hi OP

Why won't you buy from M&S? Just curious as I don't know the reason.

That's a shame hotel chocolat are now owned by Mars.

CaptBirdsEar · 08/03/2025 08:04

Just buy an egg, why does everything have to be political?

Goldenbear · 08/03/2025 08:04

John Lewis - their own eggs.

Everything is political. I wouldn't buy anything South African during the boycott and I have always avoided Israeli produce. It might be more difficult boycotting US products but I can try.

CaptBirdsEar · 08/03/2025 08:06

@CaptainMyCaptain

No you're wrong. Everything isn't political. End of.

OK assuming you live without tax, housing, medical care, education, roads, national defence etc. etc. etc.

CaptBirdsEar · 08/03/2025 08:19

@CaptainMyCaptain

Oh dear.

It's called personal choice as to where you buy anything from.

Hadalifeonce · 04/03/2025 15:18

I think Hotel Chocolat is British owned.

It’s owned by mats which is American 🇺🇸

CarefulN0w · 08/03/2025 08:25

Good thread OP. I have lazily imagined making my own Easter Eggs since lockdown and this has inspired me to give it a go.

It looks like Callebaut chocolate nibs are made in Belgium.

itsnotabouthepasta · 08/03/2025 08:26

What about your local co-op own brand chocolates?

It’s individual choice how I spend my money. As it is yours. I’m not telling you to do it.

I draw the line with tech - I’d find it hard without Apple, Microsoft and Google.

But Easter eggs? That’s easy.
