Is your house “visitor ready”?

CharliesAngles · 26/02/2025 14:29

Right now?

Much is made of this on MN, so if there was a surprise knock on your door now, would you be happy with the state of your home to allow your visitors in?

If the house is perfect nobody pops round it’s like a sure way to not have anyone over, if it’s not someone will pop round always the case! x

RosaBaby2 · 26/02/2025 18:15

Yes my house is always visitor ready, the only people I would have visit are people that accept me and my home as it is which is generally messy 😊

Marylou2 · 26/02/2025 18:17

Yes, just about. DDs revision is all over the dining table, but she's in the middle of A level mocks. Otherwise reasonably tidy.

Dariendreamer · 26/02/2025 18:20

I mean, sure. Come on in. But there is literally a bagged up dog poo and pee sample by the front door as we are heading out to a vet appointment later. Oh, that and the pee pads in the living room. Life with an elderly dog is hardly insta ready 😂

Cakeandcheeseforever · 26/02/2025 18:20

Well, I recently got rid of the wormery my kids had in the living room, so that’s a plus.

But there is still no-doubt chocolate the kids have dropped places without me knowing, as well as the usual balls, balloons and toys you might fall over on. It depends on the visitor and how limber they are.

BusyExpert · 26/02/2025 18:35

my house is always clean , it sometimes is a little untidy, However when I see the mess and dirt some people live in I never worry about what an unexpected visitor thinks about it.
Generally my house is 30 mins to and hour away from looking pristine.

WhatTheFuckIsThisNow · 26/02/2025 18:36

In all the 22 years we've lived here we've never had a visitor but yes, if we did it would be! Certainly clean and tidy enough not to be embarrassed when repair people come in.

maudelovesharold · 26/02/2025 18:43

Downstairs fine atm - usually passable. Upstairs ok, but I would make sure all the doors off the landing were shut! The upstairs bathroom is usually ok if I was the last one in there. No-one else seems to top up the loo rolls, soap or tidy the towels, so I’d have to do a quick recce!

AdoraBell · 26/02/2025 18:48

No. Laundry drying in the kitchen, dry towels etc on the dining table ready to fold, another load in the machine. Lounge is probably dusty, haven’t looked for a few days, kitchen needs tidying but I’m not doing that before I cook dinner or we’ll never eat this evening. Also, the dishwasher packed up 2 weeks ago, just out of warranty, and I CBA washing up after lunch.

Newyorklady · 26/02/2025 18:59

No but why do we worry about these things.
People should accept us the who we are and I’m a busy Mum.
Its clean but not perfectly tidy.

mathanxiety · 26/02/2025 19:18

It's in pretty good shape, and I have cake.

narcASD · 26/02/2025 21:38

Mostly yes, it's lived in and sometimes has kids homework books out on the kitchen table or a few plates to wash up, stay hairbrush / a jumper / school bag etc, but nothing that doesn't resemble a home with kids and parents that work full time.

My front room is always tidy though

narcASD · 26/02/2025 21:40

@WhatTheFuckIsThisNow no visitors in 22 years? No family or friend drop round? I find that a bit sad

Namechange6578 · 26/02/2025 21:51

Not great but not in a state I'd be embarrassed about or anything.

Although when we do cleaning when DDs are around they often ask who is coming round 😂

Maddy70 · 26/02/2025 21:54

Absolutely not and even whe we have notice it's never perfect!

CuteKoalas · 26/02/2025 21:54

Yes. 99% of the time it is.
Unless they will see the small basket of washing to pack away I've just taken out the tumble then yes definitely . Said washing will be packed away after my shower

CuteKoalas · 26/02/2025 21:56

Fwiw. I can't relax if it's a mess. But if it ever was and I hadn't hoovered or washed up or anything. My friends wouldn't judge. Likewise I don't judge them and 2 of my friends live in very poorly kept homes, think hoarder. But I don't judge and still visit

Chillilounger · 26/02/2025 22:05

Yes. I would be happy letting people in. It's not show home tidy but is clean enough and the downstairs rooms are presentable.

Normallynumb · 26/02/2025 22:23

I'm always happy to invite anyone in if they're passing
I live alone, but have a dog so no guarantee the floor is mud free
Quick sweep of the coffee table into a basket and there's somewhere to put coffee mugs down
Toilet is always clean
I have chocolate biscuits and a smile

RawBloomers · 27/02/2025 03:03

I would rush them through the kitchen and try to close the doors to the bedrooms! But the lounge and bathrooms are fine. I don't have super high standards, though.

TappyGilmore · 27/02/2025 03:32

It’s not bad. It could be better but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if someone stopped by right now.

As long as they don’t need to use the bathroom 🤣

We don't have any family or friends. And yes, it's very sad - I'd love to have a houseful of visitors, especially at Christmas. I love that me, DH and DD have our own little 'unit' but I do feel lonely at times.

I have amended my ways now. My bathroom is now spotless.

CharliesAngles · 27/02/2025 10:33

@WhatTheFuckIsThisNow be careful what you wish for, you're opening yourself up for a MN invasion!
Honestly, start small - could you invite a neighbour round for a cuppa or something?
How old is DD? Could she invite a friend over?

@TappyGilmore good on you! Bathrooms and kitchen is always spotless here so anyone is welcome today 🙌
