Is your house “visitor ready”?

Right now?

Much is made of this on MN, so if there was a surprise knock on your door now, would you be happy with the state of your home to allow your visitors in?

Of course. It's not tidy, not spotless, but I wouldn't die if someone popped in.

PersephoneSmith · 26/02/2025 17:26

It’s a ‘never’ from me. I’m very messy and struggle with the cleaning.

FinallyHere · 26/02/2025 17:27

Pretty much always

Child and pet free home.

dontforgetme · 26/02/2025 17:27

Mine is, kitchen floor could do with a mop and I've got some washing on the radiators but it's not so bad that I would panic if the door knocked Grin

In the next hour though after dinner time carnage and kids getting ready for their sports club it will be a mess though!

Pippatpip · 26/02/2025 17:27

No. I have large hairy dog and more mud in the house than outside!

Whyareyoulikethat · 26/02/2025 17:28

What are we classing as visitor ready?

So right now there a big basket of washing to be put away. There are a few cups and things needing to be loaded into the dishwasher. The hallway and stairs need a vacuum.

But it's reasonably clean because I do it fairly regularly.

They'd be able to sit down, have a drink from a clean cup and use the toilet.

MarkWithaC · 26/02/2025 17:29

I'm in the take-me-as-you-find-me camp. If you raise an eyebrow and judge then I don't really want you in my house anyway.
But if someone was to drop in and accept a cup of tea, I'd be mortified if there were no biscuits or chocolate to offer them.

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 26/02/2025 17:31

Mine is.

It's my haven, my sanctuary away from the ugly world outside. It's warm, clean, cosy, tidy, nicely decorated and organised. I wouldn't have it any other way. Theres not much we can control in this day and age but our living conditions are one of them.

The relief I feel when I step in the door after a day out is wonderful.

Friends always welcome to pop over too.

HolySchmokes · 26/02/2025 17:32

Yes, but at 9am this morning, absolutely not!

Yes like I wouldn't be mortified if someone stopped by and there was after dinner mess, or toys out or the cushions weren't straight.

Always, people can take us as they find us.

Edited

This is me! We don’t live in a show home and I wouldn’t want to. but equally it isn’t filthy! 🤭

I went to buy an electric guitar for my son at a house that was untidy in a bohemian way. Nice house on the outside, period with lots of space but so cluttered. Huge table in the kitchen with not an inch of space. It gave the impression of we are too busy with our fantastic lives to care rather than we are lazy slobs. I think it's a class thing.

Definately a class thing. Working classes ususally have immaculate houses and I don't blame them.

TheChosenTwo · 26/02/2025 17:38

Always, anyone is welcome at any time. If people find my house not up to their standards that’s on them and they can decide not to come again!
It’s generally pretty clean and tidy but there’s often a pile of washing sitting waiting to be taken up, shoes by the front door rather than put on the shoe rack, someone’s jumper on a sofa because they got too hot while lying on the sofa.
I like to keep a tidy house but people live here and I don’t expect it nor want it to look like a museum.
We have very regular unannounced visitors and none of them have run out the door screaming yet so I think we’re probably fine.

SwanFlight · 26/02/2025 17:40

Nope, not since we moved in really.

EmeraldDreams73 · 26/02/2025 17:40

Downstairs is tidy, but not terribly clean close up. Upstairs is a shithole.

Started work at 9, currently waiting for my last 2 pupils of the day (piano), then helping a friend's son with A level poetry revision this evening, so frankly I'm proud of how much I did in my half hour break earlier!

I used to vist people in their homes for the NHS. From my experience, ts not a class thing, its not an age thing.

moose17 · 26/02/2025 14:38

Yes it always is

Snap. Whilst we are eating there would be dirty pans etc as we wouldn’t wash up before we ate obviously.

bettydavieseyes · 26/02/2025 17:51

It always is but if I knew visitors were coming I'd still have a run around and double clean.

Spudthespanner · 26/02/2025 17:54

My house always is but I never am. If I'm at home I'm in my jammies and everyone can fuck right off. Don't come to my door.

GrainneIsAinmDom · 26/02/2025 17:57

Yes, actually, but it isn't always.

I've just cleaned the bathrooms and changed bedding today so happy even for an overnight stay 💅

strangeandfamiliar · 26/02/2025 18:03

Yes. But I grew up in 'bohemian' disorder and hated it, so we have a weekly cleaner. DH is also naturally tidy. I'm not, but have learned good habits over the years. The house has plenty of storage and always been pretty much visitor-ready, apart from teenage bedrooms. No dc living permanently at home any more, so even those rooms are pretty good now (in term time anyway!)

Coconutter24 · 26/02/2025 18:03

This afternoon when you posted yes I was visitor ready, tidy house everything in its place but if you ask me now when I’ve just seen this question, no not at all, DH home from work, kids home from school, just finished tea so the kitchen has a stack of pots. If I did get a knock now I’d definitely lead them to the living room and not the kitchen

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 26/02/2025 18:05

Pretty much. We just have a ‘reset’ every day on kitchen and front room, then clean a couple of times a week. Kids rooms no though 😖

SpuytenDuyvil · 26/02/2025 18:10

Always

BrendaSmall · 26/02/2025 18:13

Yes if my husband gets off his arse and goes and dries the dishes and put them away 🤣 my job is cooking and washing dishes his is drying and putting them away 🤣
I always have people popping in, family gives me a warning as they know I’d make them a cake or something else
