Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

I'm going to paint over the orange in white and start again i decided I hate it . I have been trying to think of shapes and coulors I could add to it and keep the orange as a back colour but I can't think of anything. I have a few ideas for a white background though so hopefully i will do it . And I have a child free weekend

I think this is why people at the beginning of this thread were saying slow down, have a think, don’t spend time and money doing things only to regret them.

FiveBarGate · 05/03/2025 19:44

I like the picture. I do think choosing the canvas/feature and then matching to that is easier than the other way around.

When you were doing shapes it didn't need art in quite the same way.

I know 😭. I think its because the orange doesn't work on a big wall small /medium nuts of orange added i think it can but nit as a whole wall .

The rush thing is a bit of a thing for me . I think i rush things because I feel positive and good about it. And I want it done whilst I'm in that frame of mind. Where if I leave it take a long time the feelings gos then I ferl a bit meh again which is sirt of what's happevd here .

To be honest I done the same with the bedrooms but they turned out how I wanted. So really its only 1 wall that I have messed up

I can't really find any art that sticks out and feels different. That's why I was thinking to go back to shapes but larger or wood type design

Yes, that’s irrelevant. At least you are keeping going and you’ve come so far from
your previous posts when you were looking for motivation to tidy up. You should be proud of yourself ⭐️

Thank you 😊 I guess it is better to mess up a wall than to be back there again 💐

You haven’t messed up - you experimented, and you didn’t like the result!
At least you are being honest with yourself, and planning to do something about it now, rather than try and live with it.
That’s the best thing about paint, you don’t like it? Paint over it!
Keep going @Youagain2025 , you are an inspiration.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 05/03/2025 22:59

If you feel like trying the wood wall, just be careful you don't get put off half way through. It looks a bit of a faff, and will take a lot of time and concentration to get right, glueing all those bits of wood to the wall and keeping them straight. And if it goes wrong, you can't just paint over it. You'll have to get the wood, and the glue, off again.
Paint is quicker and easier to change if you don't like it.

Don't know about an inspiration... maybe an inspiration of not what to do 😅 I'm going to put others back to white tomorrow. I'm a bit worried when I'm rolling some white might flick onto the painted wall hopefully not

For inspiration, you could look at the work of Beata Heuman. She's an interior designer who works a lot with colour but often with neutral walls - her rooms all have a lot of colour and pattern but she seems to blend it all together in a really cohesive way without it being overpowering.

I'm not suggesting copy her, ultimately I think your taste is different, but you might find some ideas in what she's done that you can use.

When working with colour in rooms, often it's about tone & shade. Like you, I love colour, but bright colours can be easily overwhelming and hard to work with. When looking st interior designers for inspiration, I've noticed they'll often do two things:

  1. use more muted tones than I'd choose
  2. use several different shades of a colour The more muted tones actually really work, your brain recognises the colour anyway, ans the different shades mean you can use lots of colour but in a way which isn't overwhelming. It kind of tricks your brain into thinking its brighter and more colour drenched.

I've also found it can be easier to keep some colour to accent pieces. For example, if your walls are now going to be teal and white (I think it's teal, isn't it, the other wall you've painted?) then you could keep orange to accept pieces.

While you might worry that it isn't enough, having orange as pops of colour can really work. You'd walk into the room and still recognise it as being teal & orange but without it being overpowering.

So you could use different shades of quieter orange, with one or two vivid orange pieces, to complementary the walls. The benefit of using coloured accents is that its easy to build up or change if you get it a bit wrong.

Yes i think its definitely ok for pops of colour that sort of what I done in the kids bedrooms. Not for a whole wall though. Well at least not in my room

The orange wall is now white again 🤣. This time I have to get it right.

How much would a tester pot of 100ml cover. I need it in basic terms though. How many A4 bits of paper would it cover 🤔

OP posts:
KnickerFolder · 06/03/2025 14:33

A litre of paint has about 10 square metres of coverage, so 100ml should cover 1 square metre but that would only be for one coat. There will be proportionally more wastage with a small pot (paint left on the brush or roller or pot) and you will probably need more than 1 coat.

Thank you it strips of wood that I'm painting

Does anyone know where i could get tester pots or simlar i have been looking at b&q on line. And they don't seem to do bright colours in test pots . When I was there recently they didn't have any in store either.

I'm painting strips of wood . So I really don't need big pots of paint 😔

OP posts:
KnickerFolder · 06/03/2025 18:01

How much are you painting in each colour? 1 strip or 20 strips? You can paint wood with emulsion (wall paint) but it’s better to use a paint made for wood. Wood and metal paint usually comes in smaller pots. If you only need a tiny amount of each colour, you might be better off looking at craft shops rather than a DIY store.

It's 30 strips of wood that are 12mm × 25mm x 2400mm i might choose 3 or 4 different colours then paint them. I was thinking smaller pots would be cheaper. I'm feeling a bit tight money wise . But I will buy the 2.5 tubs if I have to but I think I will only use a small amount from each tub . Also they are an arse to carry

Wood paint/furniture paint from brands like Dulux or Rustoleum come in much smaller pots eg 750ml. Are you looking at the right section? You can prime wood and paint it with acrylic paint from a craft shop, eg Hobbycraft, although you might need to seal it. That would probably be the cheapest option with the widest range of bright colours.
