Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

I remember your sofa from your last post about this. I can’t remember what you concluded then (and I think I’m right I remembering that the sofa was brand new, so you didn’t want to replace it even though you didn’t like it?), but honestly, I think any significant alteration to the room will be stymied by the dominant sofa. Weren’t you considering taking some sections out to make it less crammed-looking — did you decide against?)

IntermittentStream · 16/02/2025 13:07

I mean, with the sofa dominating one end, and the big tv and built in unit the other, with one wall almost entirely glass, I think changing wall colour and flooring isn’t going to transform it. And I think the reason people were suggesting cushions and deep, saturated colours last time was because a huge black leather sofa in an otherwise pale room is going to dominate the look.

Oh I still may take one bit away . I'm not sure. I thought about putting the bit i take away near the patio door the long window next to it. I'm not sure. But i want to put the sofa issue to one side for now. As I can't replace or get rid of it . So I would concentrate on the decor side of things for now.

I’m not sure really. I think the wall shelving/cupboard unit being massive and white, and the contrasting massive black sofa are both fighting for the most attention.
The unit doesn’t look like it’s full - do you need to have the whole thing? Is it modular and could you remove the top half?
The room looks like a decent size but just impersonal. The wallpaper is just on one wall and it’s not central or a focal point if you’re all sitting on the sofa,
paint over it - it’s rather distracting and kind of clashing.
Sorry, hope you don’t take any of my comments as being rude!

Silvertulips · 16/02/2025 13:18

Can you sketch the living room for us - I think the sofa or the TV should move to make it more cosy and less of a walk way - also do you have children- so need toys etc - or a dining table you need in there?

Either move the TV to the flower wall or turn the sofa under the window in front of the TV

TheClawDecides · 16/02/2025 13:21

I think your living room looks lovely as it is.

Why not just jazz it up a bit with colourful accessories/wall pictures etc?

No your comments are not rude its fine 🤣 yes I can play about with the white unit . Definitely agree about it being impersonal. That's how I feel.

I won't paint over the wallpaper. I will strip it and paint though.

I think so, too.

Unless you go really outre and embrace the black and white with stripes on floor and/or walls. It would still look very stark without some strong colour accents, though.

Can you remove the corner bit of the sofa and put a table in there with a lamp and a plant? Maybe a few photos in frames. I know you want to keep "the big light" but it might help break up the expanse of black sofa?

Deffo remove the paper and rethink the colour scheme. Agree about removing the top bit of the unit if you can.

Is that a radiator between the window and the door?

I do like bright loud type things. But I don't know how to work it. Or if it would work in a living room.

Can you give a floor plan with doors, windows, radiators etc marked so we can visualise it? Ideally with approx measurements!

I scanned past this post i thought it was an add 🤣

I'm not really sure. It looks a bit bage (can't spell it) it kind of looks like strange panels with lights round the edges.

WickWood · 16/02/2025 13:59

I'd personally get rid of the entire unit around the TV. I'd put some shelves up either side with hanging plants, ornaments, photos etc. I do like panelling, you could do a nice blue or green colour on the panels. I don't think there's anything wrong with your flooring but a nice rug would make it look more inviting x

No i can't sorry. My brain won't work for that. I get why you ask though.

I only finished paying for the unit like a month ago 😭

The floor feels a bit crap it wasn't out down well and bits have got ruined. Althoigh a rug would cover that.

I like paneling as well I'm just not sure how in this room.

There’s no point in panelling in your room — two big wall sections are covered by the sofa, one is virtually all glass and the other is covered by the tv unit! There’s literally no space to put it on!

user1492757084 · 16/02/2025 14:14

I would start by painting the walls to match the colour of the cabinets - the brighter/lighter cream..
If replacing the flooring, I'd replace the flooring with a slightly darker shade wooden flooring or green/khaki carpet.
Look for inspiration in magazines or real rooms to identify your decor favourites. Do you like large colourful prints on walls, or photos, or landscapes? Once you have chosen what you want to display allow that item to influence your colours for throw rugs, floor rugs and flowers etc. I would also have a large indoor leafy plant in a pot.
On the windows I would have simple double roller blinds coloured slightly darker than the walls. I would have them up mostly, to see the garden, but easily be able to close them for privacy and warmth.

IntermittentStream · 16/02/2025 14:14

And when you say you like ‘bright, loud things’, could you give an example of what you mean, OP?

As far as I can see your issue with this room is that you have purchased two giant pieces of furniture that dominate the room and don’t really work together, and you’re trying to do damage-limitation via wall colour and flooring. But if you could give us some examples of what your taste is, what kinds of look you like. It might help..,?

Silvertulips · 16/02/2025 14:17

I’m guessing this is the layout

Can you draw one?

👍 I was thinking that to. There is the floor to ceiling panels but like you say I don't really have any full walls

Think of the room like an outfit. You've got the equivalent of a white dress with a huge black bag (sofa) and high white boots (the unit) and for various reasons those aren't up for discussion. If you were accessorising, what would you chose? Big statement jewellery, lean in and add more monochrome accessories, a floral scarf....
Sometimes if you've got room blindness looking at it in a different way might get you over the equivalent of writers block.
FWIW I can absolutely see why you got the previous advice about going dark, so the sofa doesn't dominate. I'd try to balance it with some smaller black accessories that you can also add colour with - matching black frames with a selection of colourful prints, a black and white striped vase with bright flowers in.

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 16/02/2025 14:32

You say you don’t like the brand new sofa, and you also don’t seem overly keen on the brand new unit. My main advice is stop buying things!

Why don’t you want side lights? Is it that you don’t like a poorly lit room? If so, side lights don’t mean poorly lit. If you can say why you like a big light we can give suggestions.

Have you got a Pinterest account? If not, get one and start swiping.

One thing I notice is that (to me) your room is bare. Sofa, tv, white unit, a few small plants. That’s it. You say you don’t like cushions and lamps, but that sort of thing adds warmth and character. I have pictures, posters, candle holders, cushions, nicknacks, plants of different shapes and sizes, and the main difference is that I have my things on display. I would take the doors off the units and see how that looks. What is in them? Do you not have curtains? They soften the look of a room MASSIVELY.

But remember, a room without personal stuff will always look impersonal.
