Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

I really wouldn't move the white unit. Buy masking tape and use that so you don't splash the unit.

What is behind the TV?

I've not read your threads before but it's great you are motivated to do this

PinkArt · 16/02/2025 22:17

Is there no way you can empty the cabinet and just shuffle it away from the wall enough to paint behind it?

Youagain2025 · 16/02/2025 22:22

I need to move it . Because otherwise I can't paint the past the window. Same on the opposite wall there would be about 2 foot of unwanted wall at the end of the room . Plus the back wall its self .

The tv is on the wall so its just the painted wall.

I can do that for the side bits but not the ones above.

Much as I like the sage green paint idea @Youagain2025 I don't think you need to do it or move/get rid of any of your furniture. If you can paint the wallpapered wall the same colour as the rest of the room ( is it just white or is it beige?), you will be halfway there.
What you need to pull it all together is a large flatweave rug with the wall colour and some beige and black/grey in it (and maybe some sage green just in case you do decide to go down that route later and/or some soft pink which is also good to take the edge off the black.
Put that mirror that you like up on the end wall (the wallpapered one once you've painted it) to bounce the light around then find a large picture or wall hanging to break up the other wall.
As other posters have said some baskets on the unit will soften it a bit.
Curtains in one of the rug colours would break up the window wall but you need to make sure they are not too heavy or it will be too dark for you.

I'm definitely not getting rid of stuff.but I hate the walls . I want to do something with it. To paint the papered wall the same as the other feels to neutral. I don't like the colour and its just really boring.

It's not white the unit is .but the wall the tv is on is not white. I'm not painting over wallpaper. It should not be that hard to get of .

You could just score the wallpaper with a Stanley knife and then peel the bit you can see. I wouldn't take them off either.

Worst case you could put a bit of edging strip if you can't get a neat finish but I think you'll be okay. Then just put masking tape on them and paint.

I can definitely play about with the unit . I'm not sure what you mean by the back panels? Do u mean behidec the tv? Or the painting the back panel on the actual unit ?

Painting the back panel on the unit. So that whatever you put on the shelf stands in front of the decorated panel

This is what I meant

Ah ok. I could possibly do that. I will have a think

I think painting the walls sage green, hanging the mirror you already have and then adding some bits to the tv unit shelves would look lovely. If you have a few charity shops in your area, look to see if they are selling any ornaments, vases, etc in either sage green, mirrored or maybe in wicker to tie everything together

That sounds like an idea. Although I like sage green. I realised my bedroom is green so now in not sure again 😭

There's nothing wrong with having two green rooms in a home! It's a great colour. And it will be nice with the green lawn you can see through those lovely big windows.

It sounds like your bedroom is a different shade of green, anyway?

TethersMiddle · 17/02/2025 17:23

It can be a mistake to have lots of rooms with lots of different colours. No harmony. But this only really matters when doors are open and you see the colours together.

I can’t imagine anyone would link your bedroom this room. It’s up to you. There’s only so many colours anyway.

We tend to like certain colour palettes and our accessories are based around the. By having simple schemes throughout, it’s much easier to pull everything together. Start with something simple that works, then build from there.

HazelNotHungryLC · 17/02/2025 18:31

I would paint the room green, I've had it previously and loved it for a few years before I painted again. I would also move the cabinets to paint the entire wall, just like you, as well as removing the wallpaper as it will have a better finish.

Add pictures with black frames, do a collage behind the sofa. The black frames look really good against the green. Put your mirror up as well, either with the pictures or on another wall. Play with the layout on the floor first. Take pictures.

Add a wicker or fabric basket next to the sofa with blankets in it to soften the room.
Add thin white curtains, hanging on black curtain rods, again to soften the room.

Add a rug, maybe grey, but one that's a little darker than the floor, to ground the sofa more. I would honestly do a darker grey floor, but that's what I have and I'm biased!

I like the idea of the wicker baskets (or coloured fabric baskets) on your cabinets as well, it would help soften the room as well.

Also pops of colour using vases or other funky ornaments would be good. Gold goes well with the green and black as a pop of colour.

I think you have a nice blank canvas that just needs some finishing touches to bring it all together.

StillSittingInACornerIHaunt · 17/02/2025 20:52

I really think moving the white cabinet would be quite a faff? Surely it's all screwed to the wall in place? (If it's not... That is dangerous and must be dealt with asap!)
Last time I removed wallpaper it was an almighty faff, it took days and in the end I needed to borrow a wallpaper steamer. Never again!
If you can paint the wallpaper, then do.

Start small.
Choose a green you like.
Buy a tester pot.
Paint it on the wallpaper to see if that works and if you like the colour.
If you like the colour, paint the wallpaper wall.
Mirror up.
Pictures up, black frames.
Curtains up, black curtain pole (could be thin white flowy ones, long enough to meet the floor - IKEA or Dunelm etc).
Baskets, ornaments, bits and bobs from a charity shop / boot sale to add texture into the cabinet.

I think that will make a real difference, and you can tinker with it from there x

I don't like simple 😅 I'm not bothered about different colours in different rooms kind of want that. It feels boring to keep it simple

I would move the cabinet too. Even if nobody could see, I would still KNOW that it was wrong behind.🤣

The room will already look so much better without the wallpaper 👏

Yes that's without wetting it. I'm the first to live here so it was just. Matt paint under it.
