Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

I sympathise OP but I think you have a nice room here and you can make it lovely.
So, the sofa is staying, so is the white unit. I think the floor is fine.
I really like the sage green suggestion. You could do sage green on the wallpaper wall, and then possibly echo it behind the TV if it isn't a faff to take the TV off and paint behind. Or of that is a faff maybe you could paint the back wall of the glass fronted cupboards sage green too. Basically if you do the wallpaper wall green, it'd be good to echo that somewhere else in the white unit. If painting anywhere around the unit if as faff you could get crafty and paint a couple of bottles or something in the sage green and put them in the cabinet.
Next, pictures. Maybe 1 big one on the wallpaper wall. Then another 1 or 2 pictures on the wall between the windows above the radiator. Then maybe a few picture frames in the white unit.
Next, texture. The easiest way to achieve texture is rugs, throws and cushions. I hear what you're saying about a rug with the dog and route in and out of the garden. Could you not do a throw (black and white) on the sofa? Easy to tidy up and would be nice to sit on the sofa under and will break up the big sofa.
The other way to get texture is plants (I like the plants you have already added around the telly) and ornaments. So try and get ornaments for the white unit that also provide texture, as a pp said, wicker baskets, but ornaments can also provide texture (like ridged or rough surfaced vases, bowls etc. Or you can get wicker wall hangings, (wicker hearts etc).
You can do it - you've got the big expensive bits, you need to add finishing touches now x

Im going to have to take the whole unit down . I probably have to get my sim to help me because I cant left it myself. I have becone weak over the past couple of years . It really piseee me of because I hate relying on someone else but yeah everything has ti come of that wall regardless.

I'm more against the throws/crushions . Than I am a rug. Throws /cushions will definitely stay a no .

The rest seems like things i can definitely try

Maybe one of those big outdoor rugs would be a compromise, as they are so easy to clean/vacuum? We had one from Ikea when we had a dog, and it was honestly the best rug we’ve had! I think it was the Morum one..

Edit; it was Morum. We had a greay one but there are other colours which would all match your walls. It was honestly such an easy rug to keep clean. And is warm to walk on.

Edited

This is an EXCELLENT idea!!! Breaks up the space, adds colour and easy to drag into garden and hose down!

I forgot - also add a mirror somewhere!
I think the suggestion above of doing the whole room sage green is good too.
Then, build from there. For pictures use black picture frames, to balance out the sofa.

I have this mirror . Which i really loved in my old house. But its not been put up in this house .

That could be stunning.

Personally, I would get the walls sorted and everything tied together. I would live with it for a week or so (take photos from every angle) THEN I would start to think about accessories. Get the foundation sorted first.

What is monochrome? I tried to Google but it shows black and white pictures as in grey?

I like bright colours. I done my kids bedrooms bright and loads of people told me it would give them a head ache 🤣

Sorry I just meant black and white but probably not the right word.

I was thinking of the kind of prints that have that style but with a pop of colour and a bit of fun.

If you look up 'colour pop' prints you can get your own photos done this way as well.

I would buy sofa covers (I have them on our sofas as we have animals) and they fit so nicely and look really smart.

Personally, I’d put more of an oak colour floor down rather than grey (the room needs warming as it looks cold with so much white and then the stark black). I’d cover the sofas in a cream/ beige or light colour so it isn’t so focal. I’d paint the walls a nice warm colour (whatever colour you like but I like greens).

Youagain2025 · 16/02/2025 20:16

I just thought it's gonna be an arse to do . I'm gonna have to take the white unit down . Store that somewhere . Move sofa. Then the the wallpaper of . Paint all the walls white. Wait for that to dry before I can do the colour. Feels to long. I will do it though I just think I need to time it well

You have done so well op.

Can you just live with it for a bit? It's February it's gloomy. Spring is coming which may help?

For now, just think how far you have come. Enjoy that the room is clean and tidy. Don't panic and make more expensive mistakes.

Just breathe. And be proud of yourself!

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 16/02/2025 21:32

Why do you need to take the white cabinets down? Are they built okay?

And don’t move anything or do anything until the weather is warmer (you’ll need the windows open to let the paint dry and let fresh air in, the paint will smell).

Is the dark wallpaper behind the sofa all there is, are all the other walls painted?

StillSittingInACornerIHaunt · 16/02/2025 21:36

I also don't understand why you need to take the white unit down? Leave it where it is and move the sofa into the middle of the room to paint the wall(s). Then put some pics up.
The mirror you already have is great and will definitely add a focal point and texture.

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 16/02/2025 21:43

Just think about it all for now, don’t rush into things.

If and when you want to think about a paint, buy a tester pot and paint it on one wall. Then live with it for a week, look at it in the daylight, see it at night with the lights on etc.

I have lived with it for a while so a bit longer won't hurt .

It's basically because i don't like it. But i want to get it done because I'm bored and o want to do something that feels positive.

I can't really do anymore expensive mistakes that's been done 🙃

I Need to take them down so I can paint that wall. I can still open the windows even now

The wall paper is just on that wall the rest is painted

You don’t need to paint behind the cabinet. You don’t need to move the tv either! For that wall, I would leave it as it is, it’s white, leave it. For the other walls just paint. I know people who would just paint over the wallpaper too. Is it just paper, or is it sparkly/has a sheen or something? If it’s normal paper, have a go at just painting over it.

Normallynumb · 16/02/2025 21:59

Do take your time OP
Spring is a good time as you can open windows and perhaps your patio door if you're painting
You can sit and think about what you actually want the room to look like and then look for discounts online to buy things gradually.
I understand totally why you bought the sofa. It was a priority when you moved in after a difficult time.
You've done so much to make your house a home so far, and you're nearly there now.

Normallynumb · 16/02/2025 22:00

Definitely don't need to take the cabinets off to paint them.

SquishyGloopyBum · 16/02/2025 22:00

The thing is, you don't like it because the sofa doesn't work. Until you are able to deal with that, I think you just need to come to peace with it. Don't throw good money after bad.

It's not white the unit is .but the wall the tv is on is not white. I'm not painting over wallpaper. It should not be that hard to get of .

I'm not worried about the drying/opening doors. As long as it's can open the window a bit its fine. I'm not going to rush it. But I also don't think I Need to wait for spring either. I just want to do something to occupy myself that feels like I have achieved something.
