Help me with my living room again 😩

Youagain2025 · 16/02/2025 13:00

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

It isn’t plasticy at all. I would absolutely hate that with all my heart. It is soft and warm to walk on. We had a dog and a cat, and it worked well.

Thank you. I will definitely take a look

Colour wise I actually have Mellow mocha in my bedroom
Lounge I have dulux polished pebble which is a light grey, but changes subtly with the light.
I'll see if I can take a pic of my ceiling light with daylight bulb as I find do dim light( glaucoma)

You do have me thinking. Maybe gold could work. I could try . Worse case is it doesn't work and I paint over. I have come round to a rug now. But as you say short pile

Didn’t you have a big rug in this room in your previous thread?

likerocksfalling · 16/02/2025 18:11

If it was me I would change the wallpaper to the same mocha colour next to it. And buy a few decent size nice frames with photos/prints for some warmth and colour. And a rug.

TethersMiddle · 16/02/2025 18:12

I think you have too many elements:

sofa
unit
colour (focus) wall
plain wall
carpet
flooring.

You have the flooring, the sofa and the unit that you can’t change. You need ONE colour that ties them altogether ( a soft colour). Paint that all over and the room will be less busy.

Oh OP I can feel your frustration in your posts!
Here's my thoughts, if they are at all helpful...

A black sofa unit is fine if it's part of a balanced cool and warm colour theme, so start with that decision first. Choose two more colours - another cool tone in the same colour 'family' as black; plus another warmer contrasting colour.

So for instance black, with pale grey and warm yellow/ gold for contrast. Then balance these colours out in your room - such as pale grey walls, and warm yellow/gold curtains and a rug or cushions. Stick to plain decor in your chosen three colours, and use texture to add more interest rather than colour patterns, as it's much easier to keep the balance. If you want more pattern, use pictures on the walls or cushions. They are much easier and cheaper to replace if you change your mind.

I mention those three colours as they are used in your wallpaper, but you could choose another combination. Combinations such as black, with pale grey or greige, or cream, or white or even a muted green. Then select a warm brighter accent colour such as dusky/blush pink, or tan, gold, or orange.

Pick your colour scheme first and make sure you're entirely happy with it - then research combinations and decide on how you will allocate each element - black sofa, a muted colour in the same family for larger areas such as walls/flooring (your flooring already seems to fit the bill), then warmer colour accents for furnishings such as rugs/curtains/cushions.

Im confused 😭

2 more colours from what? What was my first colour?

I'm taking the wall paper down I hate it . So yes can definitely do different colour.

What's muted green ? Accent colour?

Allocate each element does that mean what i would put where ?

Muted color is confusing me.. to me mute means non speaking?

I'm so sorry . I know you took time to suggest them things . But I don't understand the wording

The sage is my favourite (I suggested the other because I think you mentioned liking bright colours).

The sage would work with the floor, soften the black and be a gentle contrast to the white units. It also supports the colours coming in from the garden windows.

Ah yes . Not one solid wall of bright though. Lots of smaller bright colors together.

Would i just paint the whole room sage ?

Black is the first colour - that's fixed because of the sofa, so you need two more to go with it.
Second colour muted means a neutral not bright colour, that will complement the black - so pale grey, cream, even off-white, or pale beige, (something like your flooring).. add a third colour for accent - not too much of it - such as blush pink, gold, yellow, tan.

Sage green would also work for a muted second colour - something like this....

I sympathise OP but I think you have a nice room here and you can make it lovely.
So, the sofa is staying, so is the white unit. I think the floor is fine.
I really like the sage green suggestion. You could do sage green on the wallpaper wall, and then possibly echo it behind the TV if it isn't a faff to take the TV off and paint behind. Or of that is a faff maybe you could paint the back wall of the glass fronted cupboards sage green too. Basically if you do the wallpaper wall green, it'd be good to echo that somewhere else in the white unit. If painting anywhere around the unit if as faff you could get crafty and paint a couple of bottles or something in the sage green and put them in the cabinet.
Next, pictures. Maybe 1 big one on the wallpaper wall. Then another 1 or 2 pictures on the wall between the windows above the radiator. Then maybe a few picture frames in the white unit.
Next, texture. The easiest way to achieve texture is rugs, throws and cushions. I hear what you're saying about a rug with the dog and route in and out of the garden. Could you not do a throw (black and white) on the sofa? Easy to tidy up and would be nice to sit on the sofa under and will break up the big sofa.
The other way to get texture is plants (I like the plants you have already added around the telly) and ornaments. So try and get ornaments for the white unit that also provide texture, as a pp said, wicker baskets, but ornaments can also provide texture (like ridged or rough surfaced vases, bowls etc. Or you can get wicker wall hangings, (wicker hearts etc).
You can do it - you've got the big expensive bits, you need to add finishing touches now x

Edited

I would paint the whole room sage. Get it all tied together harmoniously. You can build from there.

StillSittingInACornerIHaunt · 16/02/2025 19:06

I forgot - also add a mirror somewhere!
I think the suggestion above of doing the whole room sage green is good too.
Then, build from there. For pictures use black picture frames, to balance out the sofa.

So with the black is that the sofa. Or am I also adding black paint ?

I wouldn’t do black paint.

Think of this:

It’s a classic decor rule that helps create a color palette for a space. It states that 60% of the room should be a dominant color, 30% should be the secondary color or texture and the last 10% should be an accent.

https://saralynnbrennan.com/the-60-30-10-design-rule/#:~:text=What%20is%20the%2060%2D30,10%25%20should%20be%20an%20accent.

“Add a fourth color to the mix by doing something like 60-30-10-10. This will be done by adding a second accent color in your accessories such as throw pillows, vases on shelves, picture frames, etc.”

You will have the walls, floor, units and sofa.

With the sage green, the units, floor and walls will be harmonious. The black sofa will be the accent colour.

Stick with these.

As someone else said, you could have black picture frames as an accent.

TethersMiddle · 16/02/2025 19:16

60 - sage green walls
30 - natural flooring
10 - white units and window frames

^ harmonious

10 - black accent colour

(60, 30, 10, 10)
