Do you have Chinese takeaways that are also a chip shop in your area?

And if so (approximately) where are you?

I didn’t know that they existed until now.

I’m in Glasgow and they don’t exist here or if they do then they aren’t common. Chip shops are mostly run by Italian families.

The takeaways do sell chips but usually only as a side dish and I can’t imagine many people choosing to order them alone over chips from a chip shop.

I’m curious to know in which areas Chinese chip shops are common.

TIA

Not much where I live now (Surrey area) - I’m sure most of the local Chinese takeaways have chips somewhere on the menu but they’re def not a chip shop.
Grew up in south Manchester and yes, our local chippy was also the Chinese takeaway. One and the same thing. Not sure if that’s the case now. I was always told the correlation was related to some Chinese cooking having the deep frying battered items skills, resulting in perfect cross over to battered fish. No idea if that’s actually true!

I’m in the south east and my town definitely has one Chinese / fish and chip shops and at one point had a second (it might still be open). I’ve seen a few of these over the years and always thought it was a bit strange.

North west, and most of the chippys are Chinese here. My fiance is from Horsham and tells me it's unheard of down south!
He is very pleased about the gravy on chips addition to his life which also isn't a thing there!

Lanawashington · 11/02/2025 11:10

Yes I'm in Somerset and most of them in our town are also chip shops

PrincessAnne5Eva · 11/02/2025 11:10

I feel a bit "Sheldon Cooper" but I don't like food places that do multiple types of food and advertise fish and chips as one of them, because I have found the chips are always takeaway chips not "proper" chip shop chips and the wrong type of chip bothers me more than it should. 🤣

Some Chinese people well I think they are from Malaysia but their ancestry and cuisine is Chinese took over the local fish n chip shop.
It's not that unusual around London.
As well as traditional fish n chips and pukka pies they sell Chinese food.

SpeedyMackechnie · 11/02/2025 11:11

Aberdeen - we have them here

I grew up near there and we had one, so he just never noticed!

ThePuppyHasZoomiesAgain · 11/02/2025 11:13

We used to have one that did Chinese and fish chips. It was really good. The Chinese couple that own it changed it to just fish chips about 8 years ago as it was less work for them. The fish and chips are really really good.

ThePuppyHasZoomiesAgain · 11/02/2025 11:14

Oh I'm near Heathrow but not in a London borough

Octavia64 · 11/02/2025 11:14

Cambridge yes

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 11/02/2025 11:14

There used to be one in Exeter (Devon) Not sure if it's still there.

Aussiegold · 11/02/2025 11:17

Not unusual for a Liverpool chippy to have a full Chinese menu as well......was sorely disappointed to find this was not the case in other, less cultural, parts of the country.

Bowling4soup · 11/02/2025 11:19

The idea seems crazy to me I can't imagine a chip shop selling Chinese! Or vice versa. I'm in East Yorkshire

That is entirely possible. He can't see what is in front of him at the best of times 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Good job he has other qualities 🤭.

spiderlight · 11/02/2025 11:21

Yes, several. Cardiff. Also had them in Swansea, where I grew up.

SoapySponge · 11/02/2025 11:21

Yes. We're in Berkshire and I know of others in South London and Kent.

sashh · 11/02/2025 11:23

When I was growing up (Lancashire) I think this was the norm at most Chinese.

Currently in Wolverhampton and the two nearest Chinese have a fish and chip shop next door or next door but one. They do chicken and chips and steak but not fish.

Same here. I agree with the previous poster places serving multiple food types including fish and chips never seem to do proper fish and chips.

If I want chippy tea I go to the chip shop. If I want Chinese food I go to the local Chinese. They are two very different types of food and I find it odd that somewhere would do both and I suspect they wouldn't be as good as somewhere just focusing on one type of food.

babasaclover · 11/02/2025 11:25

I'm south east and yes very common. They are always epic apparently the one nearest to me uses nut oil to fry in. Not good for those allergic but OMG the crispness it makes is the best

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 11/02/2025 11:30

Yes, my local Chinese takeaway in Southport does fish & chips, many different permutations of other “English” dishes (pies, sausages and the like), burgers, pizzas and kebabs.

PearlClutzsche · 11/02/2025 11:31

I'm in South Wales and near me there was a chippy that was also a Chinese takeaway; and I mean a proper chippy, not just a chips-on-the-menu Chinese.
Recently they've stopped the Chinese food, sadly.

There was something similar where I lived in Fife Scotland as a child, late 70s/early 80s, proper chippy with proper Chinese.

This!

I'm surprised by the people on here from the NW saying it's normal. I'm in the north west and have never come across a Chippy/Chinese combi shop, they're always separate.

ZimbleFox · 11/02/2025 11:34

I knew of a couple of fish and chip shops near to where I grew up (South Yorkshire) that were run by Chinese families but they were just fish and chip shops, not Chinese takeaways as well.
