Do you have Chinese takeaways that are also a chip shop in your area?

And if so (approximately) where are you?

I didn’t know that they existed until now.

I’m in Glasgow and they don’t exist here or if they do then they aren’t common. Chip shops are mostly run by Italian families.

The takeaways do sell chips but usually only as a side dish and I can’t imagine many people choosing to order them alone over chips from a chip shop.

I’m curious to know in which areas Chinese chip shops are common.

TIA

It's always seemed normal to me. Lived in various home-counties growing up and now in the West Country and chinese chippies are definitely a thing. Where I lived in Hertfordshire the chinese chippy did brilliant chips but where we are now you'd have to be drunk or desperate to go for the chinese chippie when there's a better non-hybrid chipshop nearby. I expect it's to do with the temperature of the hot oil and as pp suggest maybe the places whose chips are less good are saving money by setting the fryers a few degrees lower. We also have pizza-chipshop hybrids that do neither pizza or chips very well.

I'm in Berkshire and all the local Chinese takeaways are also fish and chips shops and they aren't very good at either. I'm originally from Glasgow and miss the old Italian owned chippies and the decent (European style) Chinese takeaways. Pizza Crolla in Buchanan street was a very late night destination for me as a teenager.

Chinese chippy near me. Manchester. It’s a proper full on traditional chippy owned by a Chinese family. It doesn’t look like a Chinese takeaway. The only clue is the Chinese menu on the wall next to the chippy menu.

sainsburyselephant · 11/02/2025 12:22

No Chinese/Chippy crossovers here but lots of our fish & chip shops are owned by Chinese families (North London)

We also have a lot of Greek & Turkish run chippys too.

mindutopia · 11/02/2025 12:28

I am in rural Devon and our nearest town there are 2, which is pretty much the only takeaway options (other than 2 actual fish and chip shops that don’t also do Chinese!). Had never seen this before we moved to this house, but have been in the South West my whole adult life. Frankly, don’t know how they all stay in business as none of them are great.

ImWearingPantaloons · 11/02/2025 12:31

I'm in the East Midlands and yes our local Chinese takeaway is a chippy as well.

They sadly make lousy chips so I never use them as a chippy, only for Chinese food.

PennyKitchen · 11/02/2025 12:31

Yes all of them. Liverpool.

Redruby2020 · 11/02/2025 12:32

We have a good few I'm in London.

Not much where I live now (Surrey area) - I’m sure most of the local Chinese takeaways have chips somewhere on the menu but they’re def not a chip shop.
Grew up in south Manchester and yes, our local chippy was also the Chinese takeaway. One and the same thing. Not sure if that’s the case now. I was always told the correlation was related to some Chinese cooking having the deep frying battered items skills, resulting in perfect cross over to battered fish. No idea if that’s actually true!

Yeah like usually in the starters I think or somewhere there on our local ones. Salt and pepper chips etc. They are quite nice actually.

SatinHeart · 11/02/2025 12:35

I grew up in the south east and our local chippy was also a chinese takeaway. I'm in the south west now and haven't seen one round here.

Onabench · 11/02/2025 12:40

Not something in my area 😁 you have proper fish and chip shops at the coast, then in the towns you have chippys that do pizzas and kebabs too. And the Chinese is just the Chinese. And every takeaway has chips, but not chippy chips 😁 North East

InWalksBarberalla · 11/02/2025 12:45

This is interesting. I'm in Australia and have never come across a Chinese/fish and chip combo - or a Chinese restaurant that serves chips. But we do have many, many country pubs with a old school style Chinese menu alongside standard pub fare.

JudgeBread · 11/02/2025 12:48

Ha, I thought they were a British staple, surprised to learn they're not everywhere. I've got two Chinese Chippies within walking distance of my house and about 8 within a 5 min drive. Live in North Wales. I've got a favourite, they do cracking fish and chips and cracking Chinese takeaway so they win.

Years ago, my Northerner husband's jaw dropped on learning our London chippies didn't do gravy. Didn't do curry sauce. 'What? Go to a Chinese chippy, they always do curry sauce'. No, sorry, never heard of any of this, no Chinese chippies, no curry and no gravy. Completely unimpressed with simple salt and vinegar.

Can't say I blame the poor bloke I'd be unimpressed at a chippy that didn't do gravy or curry sauce too.

Also on the back of this thread I've googled to see if we have a Chinese chippy here that I've just not been aware of and Google has given me zero results so I'm guessing that's a no.

Spidey66 · 11/02/2025 12:53

Yes, we have at least one. We're in Frome in Somerset.

TomatoSandwiches · 11/02/2025 12:54

I live in Berkshire and have never seen one but others on this post from my end say there is so I suppose it depends on where you typically order from, we have a favourite separate Chinese and fish & chip shop.

HoobleDooble · 11/02/2025 12:54

We used to have one near us that was set out like a proper chippy when you went in, with the glass display things on the counter with fish, pies etc in but also had a chinese menu. It's just a normal chinese takeaway now. Another in the area has a good English selection on their menu, you can have steak and chips, chicken portions, sausages, a variety of omelettes etc ... but not fish.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 11/02/2025 12:58

Multiple Chinese Chippy combos in Swindon

Deathraystare · 11/02/2025 13:01

Yes, West London here.

I always think of Phoenic Nights and the Chinese chef stir frying chips!!!!

SquigglePigs · 11/02/2025 13:04

In the Midlands and there's one locally that does both but no, most are separate. We've got a fair few chippy's in the vicinity that have one awards and they're the ones that don't branch out into other things so much.

Growing up in East Anglia they were always separate.

Dizzybob · 11/02/2025 13:04

Merseyside and pretty much every chippy is also a Chinese. If fact we we are getting a Chinese we’d have to clarify if it proper Chinese or chippy Chinese.

I had also never come across a battered sausage until I moved away for uni!

Dizzybob · 11/02/2025 13:09

Oh and they are proper chippy chips, not takeaway burger type place chips.

TubeScreamer · 11/02/2025 13:14

East Mids and no

Laura36TTC · 11/02/2025 13:40

There used to be one in Motherwell, pre covid.
