Do you have Chinese takeaways that are also a chip shop in your area?

And if so (approximately) where are you?

I didn’t know that they existed until now.

I’m in Glasgow and they don’t exist here or if they do then they aren’t common. Chip shops are mostly run by Italian families.

The takeaways do sell chips but usually only as a side dish and I can’t imagine many people choosing to order them alone over chips from a chip shop.

I’m curious to know in which areas Chinese chip shops are common.

TIA

I stayed at a Premier Inn near Chester for a few nights and there was a chippy/Chinese round the corner. We used it every evening for our dinner and it was all delicious food.
To make thjngs even better, across the road was a Morrisons with a cafe, so that was breakfast sorted.
Much better than paying exorbitant prices at the in-house offerings.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I find these regional differences fascinating so it’s interesting to learn more.

I’m in Yorkshire too. I’m sure they fry potatoes in China too, but obviously it’s not what you’d call Chinese cuisine, least not from my POV. Fried potatoes are pretty universal. In fact all the Chinese dishes are just variations of one another in a vaguely similar sauce. I’ve never seen one that is also a chippy.

Interesting although Chinese are the world's largest producers of potatoes they don't really form a large part of the diet - jist treated as another vegetable. Their is a popular Sichuan dish of shredded and stir fried potatoes- but they are very lightly cooked and nothing like chips. Other than that you'll find them in lamb and potato type stews up in the northern regions. Or in Shandong style nightshade dishes (withceggplants, peppers, etc). The government are on a bit of a campaign to turn potatoes into more of a staple because they are cheap and easy to grow but it hasn't really taken off.

Yes NE.
And chip chips that are also kebab/burger/pizza takeaways too.

See, I'd be deeply skeptical about anywhere that sold those things alongside fish and chips because its not what I'm used to.

The fish must be haddock and it must be fried in beef dripping also.

We have one near us Qld Aus
Owners run the 2 shops, 15 steps from each other
Can order from both menus in both shops and they will just bring your fried rice to the chip shop or vice versa, depending on what one you placed your order in
The staff work across both stores depending on whos busier that night

They our go to, really good food and well priced with huge serves

I've never seen one in London. But I can imagine when Chinese people first started moving here, the food might have been a bit exotic seeming to British pallets, so they sold F&C as it was already familiar and popular. And frying fish is similar to frying battered prawns and stuff so they would have the equipment and skills.

I think it was probably down to buying a business and you already had the deep fryers so you might as well use them, and learning to cook fish and chips was relatively easy.

I'm with @Bjorkdidit on the dripping. I can't get them here but I took a friend to the coast near Scarborough and we ate fish and chips every day.

But then I was brought up in Lancashire so I quite like gravy on my chips that are not cooked in dripping.

The weirdest thing, for me, was seeing 'everything' being deep fried in Glasgow, including a pizza and a burger.

20 years ago when we lived elsewhere the best chips came from the Chinese takeaway

HoraceCope · 12/02/2025 06:32

more recently when my dd worked at the Chinese restaurant she often bought home salt and pepper chips and they were delicious

North west, and most of the chippys are Chinese here. My fiance is from Horsham and tells me it's unheard of down south!
He is very pleased about the gravy on chips addition to his life which also isn't a thing there!

He's wrong. I grew up in Sussex, and we had a local Chinese/fish and chip place.

HoraceCope · 12/02/2025 06:39

south east, favourite fish and chips run by Chinese, but not a Chinese takeaway

Bwoaolkk · 12/02/2025 06:48

No. South West seaside town.

The Chinese takeaways serve chips but not a full fish and chip shop menu alongside the Chinese one.

MargaretThursday · 12/02/2025 06:50

Yes, SE. But also we had them growing up in a northern village and I've just checked and they're still there.

PickaStar · 12/02/2025 20:45

I live in a village in Surrey, we have a Chinese takeaway that does the full compliment of takeaway favourites and excellent fish and chips.

Serpentstooth · 18/02/2025 07:49

Oh, the Glaswegian fried pizza! I watched the shopkeeper throw my daughters pizza in the fryer and didn't know what to say. I glumly paid for it and binned it ASAP. I understand now that its a Scottish delicacy that the rest of us don't appreciate as much as we might. Are there ex-pat Scottish chippies anywhere else in UK where deep fried pizza is desirable?

SwanOfThoseThings · 18/02/2025 07:58

I don't know of any. The Chinese takeaways sell chips, and the chippies sell Chinese curry sauce but that's the only overlap in my area (W Yorks).

PineappleSeahorse · 18/02/2025 08:01

I am Glaswegian and I will never understand the appeal of deep fried pizza(or munchie boxes). You can get regular pizzas too though I prefer to go to an Italian restaurant for my pizza.

NW and all of them are where I live. when it’s chippy tea night, we have fish and chips (Me), Chinese (DS/DH) and burger (DD) all from the same place.

I live close to the coast and there’s probably a few chippy only ones in the more tourist locations.

Tisfortired · 18/02/2025 08:14

I’m in Manchester and the majority of Chinese takeaways are also chippys that’s sell eg fish and chips, sausage, pies, scallops. There are also chippys that are ‘just’ chippys which are usually English run but these are rarer than Chinese chippys.

Singleaftermarriage · 18/02/2025 08:15

North west - every Chinese is a chippy by me. I thought they all were!!
Not every chippy is a Chinese though....

nex18 · 18/02/2025 08:35

I’m in the West Mids, Chinese takeaways always sell chips but not chippy chips, most seem to be Cantonese in this immediate area. A lot of fish and chip shops are Cypriot run. Dd lives in Liverpool, where I think this thread has established Chinese chippys are common. She always comments on the curry sauce being Chinese curry sauce not chippy curry sauce.

PrivacyScreen · 18/02/2025 08:55

No not in Ireland. Almost all the chip shops are run by Italians, and I've read they mostly come from the same area in Italy too.

magicstar1 · 18/02/2025 08:55

Aussiegold · 11/02/2025 11:17

Not unusual for a Liverpool chippy to have a full Chinese menu as well......was sorely disappointed to find this was not the case in other, less cultural, parts of the country.

My grandparents were in Liverpool, and I still remember the chips from their local Chinese chipper as the best I've ever had. That was nearly 50 years ago and I can almost taste them now. I recently checked google maps and they're still there...I'll have to visit one day lol.

Bloom15 · 18/02/2025 10:34

In Liverpool I would say 95% of chippys are also Chinese takeaways and ran by people who are either Chinese or else British with Chinese ethnicity.
