Do you have Chinese takeaways that are also a chip shop in your area?

And if so (approximately) where are you?

I didn’t know that they existed until now.

I’m in Glasgow and they don’t exist here or if they do then they aren’t common. Chip shops are mostly run by Italian families.

The takeaways do sell chips but usually only as a side dish and I can’t imagine many people choosing to order them alone over chips from a chip shop.

I’m curious to know in which areas Chinese chip shops are common.

TIA

It's a 'thing' in Manchester. It wasn't where I'm from (Yorkshire) but Chinese Chippys are really common in Manchester . More so than your standard chip shop i'd say.

Ironfloor269 · 11/02/2025 13:46

All the chip shop in our Surrey suburbs as well as Buckinghamshire, where I previously lived were run by Chinese people. Which I thought was very strange considering fish and chips is a quintessentially English dish. They also strangely only accept cash. DH and I suspect they are a front to some illegal activities.

HundredPercentUnsure · 11/02/2025 13:46

Chinese takeaway that also sells chips - yes. SE.

My neighbour often knocks and asks if I'd like them to get me some chinips when they go 😆

ViolinsPlayGentlyOn · 11/02/2025 13:47

Used to be quite a lot of them when I grew up (SE England) but I think they’ve all separated into separate shops now.

There are far fewer Chinese takeaways now, as well - they all seem to have gone Thai.

In general i completely agree, but what the OP is talking about is different. They are fully fish and chip shops - proper chippy chips, in newspaper, proper battered fish, exactly normal good proper fish and chips, not pre-cut takeaway van chips. But also they’re run by Chinese families and sell Chinese takeaway. Likely you’d get better Chinese takeaway from the really nice Chinese restaurant in the middle of town, but it’s the right stuff. Didn’t see pizza or anything random on the menus. Just this double combo.

Yep, this is exactly it. We're near to Manchester.

There is a mix, some where you get the crap fries. It was a day for celebration when I found the local chinese chippy when I moved last year!

RaraRachael · 11/02/2025 13:50

There is one in our town (NE Scotland) but it's only been there a couple of years.
The Chinese is lovely, the fish and chips are not.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 11/02/2025 13:59

Not usual round South or West Yorkshire however I lived in Manchester for a while and very common there

ShodAndShadySenators · 11/02/2025 13:59

We're near Liverpool and Chinese takeaways/chippies is a very common combination. Our village/small town has three fish & chip shops and they all do Chinese as well. Our local is a couple of minutes' walk away and both the Chinese food and the fish & chips are great.

(As an aside I love finding out about differences like these across the country, it's quite fascinating! I'd no idea that this isn't standard across the UK)

ItGhoul · 11/02/2025 13:59

I'm from London and I live in Manchester now. I can confirm that there are chip shops that double as Chinese takeaways in both cities. I wouldn't say it's massively prevalent, but it's also not really exceptional, if that makes sense.

See also kebab shops that for some reason also do pizzas.

wherearemypastnames · 11/02/2025 14:03

I think there was a time when a Chinese could open on a Sunday but not a chippy

Haven't seen one for a long time !

Every single Chinese takeaway I’ve ever been to does chips. They taste good too. Not in the least bit Chinese though…

But the OP is asking about Chinese takeaways that sell proper battered fish and chips as well as rice and noodle dishes, so not quite the same, although I'd be surprised if there's nothing at all in China that's potatoes fried in oil, so similar to chips.

Famously, local fish and chip chain that had a branch on a main road started to get a lot of parties of Chinese tourists on 'London, York, Edinburgh' coach tours of the UK and he found out that the people on the tours were telling each other that they must get the driver to stop for fish and chips because everyone loved them so much - he said he was planning to open a branch in China.

I'm in West Yorkshire and our fish and chip shops here are very traditional with a limited menu that is haddock, chips, scallops, Yorkshire fish cakes, possibly sausages and pies, then peas and curry sauce and rarely anything else.

They're fried in beef dripping, which is essential - anything fried in vegetable oil is a huge disappointment in comparison although I agree that Chinese takeaway chips are also excellent, so that's interesting about the nut oil.

I've never seen a 'Chinese takeaway that's also a fish and chip shop' in Yorkshire so I'm intrigued to know whereabouts @Starlight1984 is.

But I find it fascinating how much the offering varies across the country even though they're all 'fish and chip shops' there's a strong regional identity. My mind was blown when I discovered what was on offer in Glasgow for example.

I’m in Yorkshire too. I’m sure they fry potatoes in China too, but obviously it’s not what you’d call Chinese cuisine, least not from my POV. Fried potatoes are pretty universal. In fact all the Chinese dishes are just variations of one another in a vaguely similar sauce. I’ve never seen one that is also a chippy.

Not unusual for a Liverpool chippy to have a full Chinese menu as well......was sorely disappointed to find this was not the case in other, less cultural, parts of the country.

Less cultural?

I would have thought, if anything, it was the opposite?

We don't have joint chip shops / Chinese where I am.

We have plenty of Chinese takeaways and plenty of traditional chip shops. Plus plenty of other cuisines.

We just don't smoosh them together into one.

Not sure why it's considered cultural superior to do so.

elm26 · 11/02/2025 14:44

I'm in Farnham and know 2 locally. We've had from one and it was delicious.

We're just outside of Huddersfield and I promise you, one of our local (and regular!) chippies is also a Chinese takeaway!

Ooh, might have to take a look, I'm not too far away.

I remember a few years ago there was an amazing Indian chippy just outside Huddersfield town centre that I went to a couple of times but sadly they closed down. They did things like chaat boxes so fish bites in spiced batter with masala chips dressed with yogurt sauce, pickles and crispy noodles.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 11/02/2025 15:00

Scouse chippies are generally Chinese. They are the best - I was sorely disappointed when I left for uni and discovered they weren't all Chinese chippies! Chinese curry sauce on chips beats gravy for me.

Have a look round Linthwaite, Slaithwaite, Marsden way....There are quite a few!

Goatblu · 11/02/2025 15:20

Yes - and I find it bizarre! I'm in the South West now but grew up in the Midlands where a lot of chip shops were owned by Greek people. It's all chip shop/Chinese around here. Shame as I quite like the dry chips from a Chinese but can't stand traditional chip shop chips.

ConsumedByCake · 11/02/2025 15:39

Yes - Tower Hamlets

purplecorkheart · 11/02/2025 15:51

We have one that is a chinese/chipper and pizza place. I think they have the kitchen split in two and appear to have two separate counters. The place looks grim and gloomy so have never tried it.

CombatBarbie · 11/02/2025 15:53

Not Chinese but the local kebab shop is also a chippy in SW Scotland
