Do you have Chinese takeaways that are also a chip shop in your area?

And if so (approximately) where are you?

I didn’t know that they existed until now.

I’m in Glasgow and they don’t exist here or if they do then they aren’t common. Chip shops are mostly run by Italian families.

The takeaways do sell chips but usually only as a side dish and I can’t imagine many people choosing to order them alone over chips from a chip shop.

I’m curious to know in which areas Chinese chip shops are common.

TIA

The existence of Liverpool Chinese Chippies is iconic - originators of spicy chips.

I feel a bit "Sheldon Cooper" but I don't like food places that do multiple types of food and advertise fish and chips as one of them, because I have found the chips are always takeaway chips not "proper" chip shop chips and the wrong type of chip bothers me more than it should. 🤣

Edited

You need to go to a Chinese chippy in Liverpool. They almost all do proper chippy chips, not the nasty kebab/burger shop fries. If you look hard enough you may even find the wonderful delicacy, the 'savoury' a deep fried battered ball of herby mashed potato.

I'm North Lanarkshire. The Chinese are just Chinese but we have tonnes of Indian takeaways that also do fish and chips.

hairyunicorn · 11/02/2025 11:37

We have loads, i live in South London.

BarbadosItsCloserThanYouThink · 11/02/2025 11:37

Yes we have two where I live but their fish and chips are never very good compared to the proper chippy.

SnoopysHoose · 11/02/2025 11:39

I live near Edinburgh and there's two locally, it's not that unusual.

Starlight1984 · 11/02/2025 11:39

Yes! The Chinese chippy!

When we get a Chinese I will ask DH if he wants "proper" Chinese or the Chinese chippy 😂

user2848502016 · 11/02/2025 11:39

Yes loads, in North Wales.
Although the chippys that are on the coast/touristy areas tend to me more traditional chippys

Sorry, should have said - we're in West Yorkshire 😊

The idea seems crazy to me I can't imagine a chip shop selling Chinese! Or vice versa. I'm in East Yorkshire

What?! I'm in West Yorkshire and we have two within about a 5 mile radius of our house!!! Is it different in the East?!

Mrsttcno1 · 11/02/2025 11:43

Quite a few where we are in the North East! We used to have a local one that did Chinese takeaway, chip shop AND Indian takeaway, it closed last year but was an absolute dream when I was pregnant because with 1 delivery I could have a fishcake, salt & chilli chicken, crispy chilli beef, onion bhaji’s and popadoms 😂😂 thankfully it didn’t close until I’d given birth because I think I would have chained myself to the desk if I’d still been pregnant!

A lot of them do pizza and burgers as well come to think of it.

latetothefisting · 11/02/2025 11:44

south wales, yeah I live near one

it's a bit weird, it's exactly the same shop and people serving, but you are supposed to queue at the left side of the counter if you only want to order fish and chips (or pies/rissoles/battered sausage etc, basically all the stuff on display within the counter like any other normal fish shop) and the right side if you want to order anything chinese (which is cooked to order in the back).

BobbyBiscuits · 11/02/2025 11:45

I've never seen one in London. But I can imagine when Chinese people first started moving here, the food might have been a bit exotic seeming to British pallets, so they sold F&C as it was already familiar and popular. And frying fish is similar to frying battered prawns and stuff so they would have the equipment and skills.

JC03745 · 11/02/2025 11:46

Coastal SE

1 local fish and chip shop is owned by Chinese with a mix of Chinese and non-Chinese staff.
Other than fish/chips, they also have a rotisserie thing with kebab meat on it! No Chinese food there, but fish/chips/burgers and kebabs!

hexsnidgett · 11/02/2025 11:49

Yes, when I lived near Preston, nearly all Chinese chip shops. Also in near Aberdeen when I have visited. They usually do very good chips!
My nearest chip shop is just fish and chips, but run by a Chinese family, they are brilliant!!

bullclip · 11/02/2025 11:50

@PineappleSeahorse I was going to say I'm in Glasgow and we don't have them their but I did see them in London when I lived their for a bit about 10 years ago. What we do have round here are takeaways that do chips, kebabs, curry, pakora, burgers, pizza and so on which you can sample in a munchie box. They are not that great but popular with the kids.

DeepfriedPizza · 11/02/2025 11:53

I didn't know this was a thing until I saw a tiktoker having chinese with chippy chips.
I am near Glasgow and our chippies and chinese takeaways are separate.
I don't know how I'd feel about having chippy chips with my chinese but I would be willing to give it a try for research purposes.

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/02/2025 11:55

Yes, North Hertfordshire. Two sides to the same shop. It's excellent.

LazyArsedMagician · 11/02/2025 12:00

Yes - Liverpool. Chinese places that also serve fish & chips, and fish & chip shops that also do some Chinese stuff.

But where I grew up - Home Counties - Chinese places were Chinese only (don't recall chips even being on offer!) and fish & chips were Greek or Turkish owned.

Inabitofbother · 11/02/2025 12:00

Yes, both places I lived in Berkshire have these in walking distance of my home. The Chinese place just stopped doing the f&c and now only sell Chinese and chips (no fish or pies or sausages).

Fish demand dropped - it has become far too expensive for most people, and keeping the fat hot and fresh was costing the chippie too much money so they gave up.

im pleased because I really don’t need the temptation!

Amazing that we have eaten so much cod that we’ve emptied out the ocean.

8billion people on the planet - it’s far too many!

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 11/02/2025 12:06

Our local chip shop is just a chip shop, but has been owned by various Chinese families for several decades.

Talipesmum · 11/02/2025 12:08

readingismycardio · 11/02/2025 11:24

Came here to say exactly this

In general i completely agree, but what the OP is talking about is different. They are fully fish and chip shops - proper chippy chips, in newspaper, proper battered fish, exactly normal good proper fish and chips, not pre-cut takeaway van chips. But also they’re run by Chinese families and sell Chinese takeaway. Likely you’d get better Chinese takeaway from the really nice Chinese restaurant in the middle of town, but it’s the right stuff. Didn’t see pizza or anything random on the menus. Just this double combo.
