What things took you far too long to realise was a, erm... "thing"?

Sorry for awkward title!

I never realised until a couple of years ago (I'm 52 😳) that at the ends of the tubes of foil, clingfilm etc, there are two little tabs you push in to "hold" the roll when you pulled it.

What other "things" can you teach this old dog?

I never knew until last year that there is a little hole on the inside of the petrol cap where you hook your petrol cover to stop it damaging your paintwork on your car!
I didn't know it was a thing 🙈.

Ummmm... Notable Events Weather Sport

I wouldn't think so, because it's called "new[info]" in other European languages too, and it's not an acronym in those languages.

Wait, what is it then?

Temporary storage. Intentionally left there as opposed to accidentally forgotten.

KetteringQueen · 03/02/2025 20:32

@PrincessofWells why would you want a directional spray on your kitchen tap?🤔

Mind. Blown.

That pineapples don’t grow on trees. They grow in stalks, like broccoli.

I took photos but can't seem to be able to add them?
Has the attach an image function been disabled, or just me?!

Anyway, now that I've had a close up inspection, I've realised there are even helpful arrows which have "Push in tab to hold roll" instructions 😅

I've just checked this out on my cling film. I'm amazed!!

Also that we're all eating chocolate biscuits the wrong way up. Put the chocolate side facing your tongue, you get more out of the chocolate flavour that way.

Ooh, lots of reasons! You can use it like a jet wash to get crud off a baking sheet, get dirt off veg more easily, swivel the nozzle around to get your sink or bowl free of suds.

The OH and I wouldn't be without them now.

Tangled123 · 03/02/2025 20:44

I thought it was renumeration too because I was associating it with ‘number’. Turns out it actually it derives from ‘money’ instead, so remuneration does make sense. I still think renumeration flows better though.

I don’t eat enough chocolate biscuits to comment on eating them upside down, but pizza tastes a lot better upside down (when the toppings allow it to be held that way).

We love ours. We replaced our tap last year and got one with it integrated. Game changer!

That 'merge in turn' signs on roads mean that you take turns to do so rather than you physically are turning towards one another. Was almost 40 before the penny dropped.

so....what did you do when you were waiting to merge?
did you angle your whole car towards the other car next to you, or just swivel your body within the driver's seat and stare pointedly at the other driver, annoyed that they weren't obeying 'the rules' and were looking straight in front of them? 😂

CrowsInMyGarden · 03/02/2025 20:49

That when you have a herbal tea you can tie the string around the handle of the cup, not just let it fall in the cup

zeddybrek · 03/02/2025 20:49

Eminybob · 03/02/2025 19:10

That it is remuneration, not renumeration.

Yes this! Me too!

I always thought money, numbers so similar. N is before the M. But nope. Figured that gem out last year. I'm 43.

Is this all windows or do you have special windows?

It'll be modern, usually UPVC, but not sash ;)

They have been for at least 30 years.

That buffalo mozzarella is made from buffalo milk?! I thought it was a way of making mozzarella not the ingredient!

At primary school my friend told me buffalo were extinct, and I was always baffled into adulthood where did buffalo mozzarella come from

ChanelBoucle · 03/02/2025 20:53

That Edinburgh is west of Bristol.

HebeJeeby · 03/02/2025 20:54

@ChippySauce i just had to go and check my roll of foil and there are those little things you mentioned!!!! I never knew that either and I’m 55.

Yes, currently no photo uploads allowed due to a horrific overnight incident last night.

What was the horrific over night incidence last night?

It's already been answered up thread.

Can we stop talking about it now? Some of us would like to actually stop thinking about it and not keep getting it brought up again.

A couple of weeks ago I realised that New Zealand is actually located to the right of Australia on the map. I always used to think it was on the left. I’m in my 40s and there is a map of the world in a frame in our house 😳

For the longest time, I thought it was on top!

I never believe that when I hear it. I always have to go and look on a map to check. Even went I visited Edinburgh I still couldn't believe it (even though I'd looked on a map and it is).
And yep, Edinburgh is further west 😜

Surely The News is just the telling of new or updated information. Is it an acronym then?

The news is multiple new things, so news. It's not an acronym.
