What things took you far too long to realise was a, erm... "thing"?

Sorry for awkward title!

I never realised until a couple of years ago (I'm 52 😳) that at the ends of the tubes of foil, clingfilm etc, there are two little tabs you push in to "hold" the roll when you pulled it.

What other "things" can you teach this old dog?

That it is remuneration, not renumeration.

I had no idea!!

A couple of weeks ago I realised that New Zealand is actually located to the right of Australia on the map. I always used to think it was on the left. I’m in my 40s and there is a map of the world in a frame in our house 😳

I had the same thing with Sri Lanka and India!

lilytuckerpritchet · 03/02/2025 21:47

That queen are singing,

"Scaramouch scaramouch when you do the fandango"

I thought it was

"Got a noose, got a noose......"

That some baby comforters which have knots in their legs can be used for tying a dummy! Ingenious p!

That 'merge in turn' signs on roads mean that you take turns to do so rather than you physically are turning towards one another. Was almost 40 before the penny dropped.

And if it said merge like a zipper then people would feel much better about both sides of the road being used to queue for it and thus the reduction in the length of the queue.

I thought news was new events, weathers and sports?

You thought that in all the centuries that the word news has existed it has some commection to sports? Not much critical thinking going on there 😂

In the medieval times they loved to hear the football scores 😂

Surely you saw this topic discussed at length last year and the other years!

It took me a few weeks and a few poonamis to realise that the shoulders on baby vests allow you to pull them down... I've since seen it mentioned on here many times. I mentioned it to my sister in jest after she had her second baby and we were both horrified she didn't know this before....!

Youngest of my 4 kids is 20 and I'm horrified I didn't work this out!

The tiny arrow on the petrol indicator level on your car telling which side it is on. Found that well into my 30s.

Not on all cars, as I say every time this 'fact' is quoted!

Not always true. Source…me when I hired a transit van once and the arrow did not correspond to the side it was on.

HamandCheeseSandwich · 03/02/2025 21:55

What?

Look at a Jojo Bebe comforter. Its legs have a knot in them. You just untie the knot, then push a spare dummy up the leg and re-tie the knot! As I said, genius, your baby can be taught to find the extra dummy on the comforter when it loses the dummy it was using.

But bufula just means buffalo...

Bufala is the female version.

I just had to look at a map to confirm this! That is NOT where I thought NZ was 😂

It's also further south than a lot of people realise, not at all like Australia climate-wise, we found it quite chilly in their late Summer. Looking in estate agents windows in NZ we saw 'lovely North facing garden' which puzzled us at first until the penny dropped!

It'll be modern, usually UPVC, but not sash ;)

Mine do it and are sash

DappledThings · 03/02/2025 20:15

That's rubbish. Some random came up with that backronym a few years ago. It's nonsense.

It is news because it is new. French for news is les nouvelles. Nouvelle is French for new.

I took photos but can't seem to be able to add them?
Has the attach an image function been disabled, or just me?!

Anyway, now that I've had a close up inspection, I've realised there are even helpful arrows which have "Push in tab to hold roll" instructions 😅

Bloody hope so after the csa that bombarded us last night. Mumsnet has finally sorted a fix

I always knew that Ebenezer Good was about drugs, but not how. I was well into my 30's when I realised he is literally singing E's are good.

Shut the front door !!!

I saw this all the time when I was 10 ffs

Seriously !!!

Booboobagins · 03/02/2025 21:16

And you're not alone. All the numpties queuing in 1 lane for miles when there should be 2 orderly queues!

Yes but I take advantage of those numpties everyday and happily go down the outside lane of the queue and just merge in. Saves me a lot of queuing time 😂 I really like it when people try to sit across two lanes to block it as there’s usually still space to get past, there was a VERY angry woman who tried to do that to me a couple of weeks ago, all I did was wave, no idea why she was so worked up.

HamandCheeseSandwich · 03/02/2025 22:12

Vergingontheridiculous · 03/02/2025 22:08

Bufala is the female version.

Edited

In Italian
But we're speaking English. We don't use that term, we use cow for the female if distinguishing. So buffalo is correct, surely? Just like you'd say "goats cheese" not " Doe's cheese".

FlowerUser · 03/02/2025 22:13

If you hold the CTL key in Word you can use the arrows to move one word at a time left and right, and one paragraph at a time up and down. Hold Shift at the same time and you can highlight words or paragraphs.

Double click on a word and it will highlight it. Click again and it will highlight the paragraph.

Double click on the top bar of an app window (Word/browser/game) and it will maximise or minimise the window.

You're welcome.

Nobody's offended except you. Pointing out something as being wrong doesn't mean anyone's offended. That's a really odd interpretation.

JustLikeJasper · 03/02/2025 22:20

@DappledThings ever heard of the saying it's not always the words you say but the way you say them? Your replies are rather animated for a supposedly light hearted thread! If you get this uptight on the internet perhaps it's time to go to bed!
