What things took you far too long to realise was a, erm... "thing"?

Sorry for awkward title!

I never realised until a couple of years ago (I'm 52 😳) that at the ends of the tubes of foil, clingfilm etc, there are two little tabs you push in to "hold" the roll when you pulled it.

What other "things" can you teach this old dog?

Have a look at the make of your hinge. It should be written on the hinge itself. Mine say Blum. They're a very common make. Search for "Blum clip on soft close". They look like grey lip sticks. You literally just clip them on! Took me 5 mins to do my whole kitchen.

Another exceptionally useful thing is a little device that screws on the end of your kitchen tap which turns it into a directional spray. Google - kitchen sink tap swivel aerator . . .

That buffalo mozzarella is made from buffalo milk?! I thought it was a way of making mozzarella not the ingredient!

I didn’t know that until I read your thread, thought “she must be wrong”, googled it and found out you were telling the truth. How stupid do I feel?

I was well over fifty when I learned about the little arrow on the petrol indicator, when the sales rep told me when I picked up my new car.

That left luggage at stations is not lost luggage.

Continuing the household then, you can remove your kitchen sink plug strainer with a flat head screwdriver. If you dare.

Careful doing that. Sometimes the screw is what holds the waste together, undo it and any water that goes down the plug hole ends up in the cupboard!

I learnt the other day that baby rabbits aren't bunnies, they're actually called kittens?? Still can't believe it.

That the word "news" comes from it being new info, so news.

Ummmm... Notable Events Weather Sport

It took me a few weeks and a few poonamis to realise that the shoulders on baby vests allow you to pull them down... I've since seen it mentioned on here many times. I mentioned it to my sister in jest after she had her second baby and we were both horrified she didn't know this before....!

I wished I’d have known this!

That's rubbish. Some random came up with that backronym a few years ago. It's nonsense.

JustLikeJasper · 03/02/2025 20:17

@DappledThings oh wow calm down, are you a news reader? 🤣

No, just someone capable of recognising nonsense. Usually comes up in the same listicles claiming "break a leg" is said because if you're successful in an audition you end up, like with a broken leg, in a cast. Also nonsense.

@DappledThings I bet you're an absolute hoot at parties!

Thanks to having a severe repetitive strain injury I've learned there are loads of keyboard shortcuts which avoid extra mouse clicks. I've learned quite a few which I just use routinely but there are tons for all the Microsoft programs and you can set up your own too.

I thought news was new events, weathers and sports?

A couple of weeks ago I realised that New Zealand is actually located to the right of Australia on the map. I always used to think it was on the left. I’m in my 40s and there is a map of the world in a frame in our house 😳

I just had to look at a map to confirm this! That is NOT where I thought NZ was 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 03/02/2025 20:30

I've never remembered to look for the arrow pointing to the petrol cap. Perhaps, but why would anyone bother. Buy new car, clock which side the petrol cap is on. Pull up next to the pump. Even if you make a mistake, don't must petrol pumps have extra long hoses now?

You weren’t watching an older episode of Call the Midwife were you? Because I found out the same thing the other day because it was on an episode!
