Should I remove a chair (pic)

I bought this corner sofa and regret it now. But im still paying it of.

It's the trek range in DFS they do sell parts like I could have turned it in to 2 separate sofas. But it seems they don't sell the leather one anymore.

The sofa as it is now touches the living room door frame then gos round to where my garden door is and there about a foot gap between the end of the sofa and the doors . I was debating taking one of the seats away to make it smaller

For me I think it’s just the black leather shininess of the huge dominating sofa, it looks very masculine, and also the brightness of the flooring kind of clashes because you’d expect more of a light Scandi look with cream sofa/pale furniture. Maybe you could use some lighter coloured throws and pillows to soften the look. Paint the walls in a lighter colour and have some nice artwork.

100% no throws or cushion i won't go back on that . I am coming round to a rug though which may make the floor area better .

I would:

  • Paint all of the walls in Farrow & Ball Green Smoke (you could get the colour mixed to save money).
  • Put up pictures in black frames to tie in with the sofa colour.
  • Remove one of the chairs from the sofa, so that it’s not quite so big.
  • Add a a grey Persian type rug (you can get washable ones). I know that you said you don’t like rugs, so this is just what I would do. You could get one large enough not to be a hazard to your toddler though.
  • Add some cushions in burnt orange and grey velvet, again that’s just me as I know that you said that you don’t like cushions, but M&S do great washable velvet ones that survived everything that my children threw at them, plus spilled red wine. They only take a second to throw back on the sofa if they end up on the floor.

I made a similar mistake with a similar sized/style grey leather sofa from DFS. I eventually got rid of it after putting up with/trying to make it work for 5 years but yours looks nicer and I think that black is easier to work with.

I may have imagined that you said that you have a toddler, please ignore if so!

I am having second thoughts about the rug. But if I do get one it will be a low pile .

I did want to make the sofa into 2 separates but that would mean taking away the corner bit then adding another end bit with arm rest but I looked it up and its 700 so im not doing that.

Walls wise i don't want anything dark. Yes definitely some type of pictures on the wall. Cushions no.

I'm going to take my time thinking about it.

We have very bright lights too. I hate a half light and DD27 is ND and can't stand it not being bright! We're not all soft lighting people! 😊

StMarie4me · 09/02/2025 13:42

I think throws are a pain but cushions are easy enough to pick up and tidy?

Thighdentitycrisis · 09/02/2025 13:48

Can you try and get the armrest on eBay or likewise if it’s discontinued?

I honestly hate dimmed /cosy lighting. Doesn't feel cosy at all . Feels depressing i hate it . Least I know I'm not the only one now 😅

It's not discontinued it was me being a dope . But it is 700 which I can't do . You have to buy the actual chair with the arm rest. Cant buy the arm rest on its own.

Cushions feel in the way.

I think without cushions it is impossible to break up the sofa and make it look more homely.
It is so big which for a family of five and visitors must be great but it is a huge expanse of black and I don't think painting the walls will change that.
But as you understandably want something practical I would just embrace the practical stark, sleek look and leave it .Perhaps paint the walls a soft white and get some modern colourful framed prints to break it up.

Lighterlilly · 09/02/2025 15:36

I’m not sure there is much you can do op as the room fits practically and has everything you wish and nothing you don’t.

you don’t like low lighting, cushions, throws, don’t really want a rug, I think it is what it is, there is nothing else that can improve it really.

I will think of something decore wise i guess. I'm having second thoughts about a rug if i do it will be a low pile type

I don’t think the decor will change it op, it is a large cold sofa, with a quite cold hard floor, I don’t think any paint of artwork can detract from this. It’s a nice room, it is fit for purposes, you don’t like softness, so it suits your needs,

That's very negative 🤣. I think it may possibly soften the room a bit. Like i said I can possibly add a rug. So that would change the floor . Could even replace the flooring. The wallpaper is awful i don't know what I was thinking at the time. And I made a fuss over it 😅 could change curtains as well.

I'm 100% not doing the throws or the rug . Although I do agree it would look better. Reason for this is it makes it harder for me to clean. I know that sounds silly but its something I struggle with . I would have to have to hoover the rug. Then roll it up them sweep the floor . Get all the crap that's managed to find its self under the edge of the sofa . I get tired and breathless quite easy and rolling up a rug feels like the end of the world . So far me it's about keeping it easy clean .

But also I do want it to feel more homely maybe I can do that with changing of wall colour /curtains/pictures

Could you get a totter and tumble type playmat instead of a rug. They are practical and easy to clean, and look fairly nice. And it might help get some of the kids to sit on the floor as they're quite comfy.

Never heard of that? What is it

I would definitely have pictures in darker frames on the empty wall, to break up the black strip of sofa.

In general, I think you should spend a bit of time on Pinterest or looking at pictures of other houses and just copy one you do like. Not many people can pull a room together in a way that goes together well, so admit it to yourself and copy! You can tweak it, but changing one thing at a time isn't working.

It sounds like you can't quite put your finger on what you do want and might end up putting a lot of work into a new wallpaper without seeing the bigger picture. There are loads of house pictures out there, plenty with massive sofas, you'll find one you like.

Yes your definitely right. I don't really know what I want or what will work . So im definitely going to take my time and keep looking . I definitely don't mind copying 😅

I like bright lights , my eyes are terrible so I’m not sitting in half light so I’m with you there . However that is a really ugly sofa and the only thing that will help it is cushions and throws because whatever you do with the floor or walls it’s still going to look like a huge dark shiny sofa . I would have a rug though because I like rugs . Sorry .

Autumn1990 · 09/02/2025 16:57

It’s not my style of decor but I think you can make improvements. Asda is great for reasonably priced cushions and throws that wash really well.
I like low pile rugs and I don’t bother lifting the, everyday, once a week if they’re lucky

I know 😭 but I still can't do cushions /throws i think I will change the decor and add a rug. Etc . I know that doesn't change the sofa. But not much I can do.

Massive bean bag?

Replaces a "missing" chair
Lives on the corner seat
Children use it on the sofa to snuggle (but have a bomb-diving ban)
