Should I remove a chair (pic)

I bought this corner sofa and regret it now. But im still paying it of.

It's the trek range in DFS they do sell parts like I could have turned it in to 2 separate sofas. But it seems they don't sell the leather one anymore.

The sofa as it is now touches the living room door frame then gos round to where my garden door is and there about a foot gap between the end of the sofa and the doors . I was debating taking one of the seats away to make it smaller

I agree you need to take out a section OP. Other than that, your style is your own, so you do you. Have you checked ebay/FB marketplace for the conversion piece you can’t get from DFS?

What about leaving the wallpaper and sofa, and painting the beige back wall?
A darker grey or blue so the sofa doesn't stand out as much

I don't want anything dark

If you can, extend the wallpaper behind the sofa.
put a rug on the ground.
and a coffee table.
and add a few textured cushions or throws to harmonise with the decor.

i dont think it’s too big. It’s big. But l think it looks bigger because it isn’t dressed into the room sufficiently.

i think of a lot of good family evenings can happen on a sofa of that scale, so enjoy it!

That's nice. And definitely breaks it up. But in reality it wouldn't stay like it the throws would probably end up on the floor kids would try make tents with them. The cushions would probably be the floor is larver or simlar. It sounds odd but it would just make it harder for me to keep tidy

This is true it does require more tidying.
but layering fabrics colours and textures is how you create interest and bring in character .
and your sofa looks big because it’s stark. With 5 in your family I would be loath to reduce the size of it. And I don’t think splitting it up will do what you want it to.

my mother was a cushion queen. And we as kids did play dens and lava with them, but we also knew how to (ie had been shown and I’m sure endlessly told to) put the cushions and throws back to dress the sofa .
it was a daily end of the day job.
so now i have a tonne of cushions etc on my sofa, and have to tidy them.

Also, I have noted you have a toddler. Once they are in reception get a coffee table or an ottoman box. You can play board games on it or reading books etc.

The black walls are horrid especially for children. It's a home not a mausoleum!

Ohyay · 02/02/2025 19:13

Based on what you want from the room I would say paint the walls a warm beige / creamy colour. B&Q Cancun. Dulux Egyptian Cotton (just for some google inspo) some black frames and prints. Maybe a few large ones and smaller ones - Gallery Wall style. Id wack a few cheap neutral cushions on.
Maybe a black light fitting / shade

I can't imagine what people, would say if I posted pictures of my living room, given the responses here!

The responses are quite decent to be honest. There's nothing unkind just opinions and suggestions really

I don’t think having the 2 walls different colours help, you definitely need more colour on the sofa, cushions and a rug would make it look more homely and add some warmth to the room

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 02/02/2025 20:46

If there's five of you plus guests I'd keep it.

MIL got rid of a sofa that she thought was "dominating a room", now there's nowhere to sit, and they bring in dining chairs for people to sit on.

The younger 2 share a seat they literally sit in each otuers pockets 🤣.

I may feel different once I decorate again and as someone else said I can try it and ad it back if it doesn't work

I think it’s the starkness of the whole room with that one ‘feature wall’ which only feels like half a wall (sorry!). Considering your wants needs I would:

  • Repaint all the walls a soft warm white and put some black framed pictures up- something cosy and homely
  • Get some nice cushions and throws for the sofa (I know you have to tidy them but it’ll make a huge difference!)
  • Get a nice pattered rug for a bit of interest
Id personally stick with black and white as ‘a pop of colour’ rarely works with black imo it makes it more stark (pleaseeee don’t use red pops of red in grey/monochrome homes look awful). If you can afford it I’d replace the shade with something a bit softer and nicer like a rattan or similar.

I'm 100% not doing the throws or the rug . Although I do agree it would look better. Reason for this is it makes it harder for me to clean. I know that sounds silly but its something I struggle with . I would have to have to hoover the rug. Then roll it up them sweep the floor . Get all the crap that's managed to find its self under the edge of the sofa . I get tired and breathless quite easy and rolling up a rug feels like the end of the world . So far me it's about keeping it easy clean .

But also I do want it to feel more homely maybe I can do that with changing of wall colour /curtains/pictures

Could you fit (the children wiggle it under) a draft excluder under each of the chairs?

You get a pop of colour without having to move them too often . Cleaning should not be a big issue as the end of chair stops mops and your vac from hitting them.
Stuff wont get lost under there.
When you need to wash them get the children to do the moving?

Edit Oops. ... non velvet option would be better

What space does the other end of the room have? Is it worth considering moving furniture and having TV etc on the wallpapered wall? Just a wee re-jig of the room?

It won't work because the living room door is in the way . And i have a big unit that covers the whole wall.

I have a similar sofa and had a similar problem. I took out one of the chair pieces and moved the end piece up and it made a huge difference.
Since you mentioned it, I too would get rid of that wallpaper and if it was me, I’d paint the whole room a cheerful colour - my front room is a sunny orange-yellow and I bloody love it (not a fan of neutral myself…)

QuietlyWonderful · 03/02/2025 11:00

Re lighting - I have a floor lamp uplighter. Mine is brass finish but you can get chrome.

The ceiling is 'washed with light so the room is well lit, but it's not as stark as having the overhead light on. It's dimmable too, for a late night cosy feel.

genesis92 · 03/02/2025 12:57
