Should I remove a chair (pic)

I bought this corner sofa and regret it now. But im still paying it of.

It's the trek range in DFS they do sell parts like I could have turned it in to 2 separate sofas. But it seems they don't sell the leather one anymore.

The sofa as it is now touches the living room door frame then gos round to where my garden door is and there about a foot gap between the end of the sofa and the doors . I was debating taking one of the seats away to make it smaller

It looks really inviting. I think that it would look hugely different if you removed the console (looks awful and out of place) which would save a bit of room and make it look less bulky.

Also remove the over fussy wall paper and go for plain walls and a huge framed print on both walls. A rug and some plants on shelves maybe.

bellsend · 02/02/2025 16:54

This circled bit is strange. What is it? An arm rest? I’d get rid of that bit. And the wallpaper. Add some plants (palm type ones to soften the look of the room)

I agree about the walls . But not the console. My kids keep their crap in there . Plus cup holders so drinks don't get knocked over . Definitely agree about the walls though.

It feels hard making a new build look homely with some character . Fire places, chimney breasts alcoves really make a difference i think . Obviously new builds can be made to look nice it's just me really

Just try it. You can always put it back in.

Put the spare seat on a corner maybe or in a kids bedroom?

Ilovemyshed · 02/02/2025 17:05

Its pretty dominant and the rest of the decor is very bland.

As the sofa has to stay, I would make a feature of it and modernise/ soften the rest. This is a similar colour scheme but much more pulled together

And if you can lose the console, replace it with an ottoman that doubles as a coffee table ( add a tray on top) and storage.

JazzTheDog · 02/02/2025 17:08

Did you post this before? Maybe last year? The room looks so familiar (but it might have had a dog before) 🙂

Anyway, I'd do as others have said and change the wallpaper (or paint over it).

Once you've reduced the size of the massive sofa, put something like this next to the end. Starts to soften the look of the room. What lighting have you got atm?

A floor lamp won't get used . I just have the main lights with theses shades . Which again i really hate now I feel embarrassed that I bought them 🤣

Yes I did . And I felt so pleased with it. And now I think its complete shit.

I would remove the wallpaper before painting.

Came here to say this. It dominates because it’s black against a pale wall.

Google ‘black boho living room’ and you’ll see lots of ideas for blending it in and softening it.

Well, why not use a floor lamp with other soft lighting/lamps? Overhead lighting is horrible and so uninviting.

AnSolas · 02/02/2025 17:15

You use the seats so work with what you have

You have 5 blocks of colour
Light floor
Brown sofa
Light wall
Dark pattern wallpaper dividing the wall into 7 sections
Light celling

The wall paper is a problem as each seat is double the down pattern stripe so they look extra wide.

One softer colour on the wall
plus a roundish rug to break up the floor space
Plus throws to break down the brown cross stripe

a some art on the wall or a pattern of mirrors with roundish shapes

Perfect.

@Buzzwuzz you seem to regret a few of your choices (sofa, wall paper, lighting) do you have anyone that might help you with these decisions? 😂

There's no way I would have a darling wall like that . I already feel the wallpaper was to dark. It would really depressing me to have that much darkness

I don't like soft lighting. I like the room in a bright light. I absolutely hate shadows and floor lamp cause shadows and don't fully light the room. It would just put me on a downer

Ok, yes it is very bold! Ok so not gothic opulence then 😆

I like PP’s idea of a big artwork above it on the wall left of the pic - you’ll see this and lots of other ideas on this web article:

Look at how that room is split into levels

Floor
Rug
Table
Seat sofa
Crap on the table
Stuff on the seats
Back of sofa
First rail of the pannel upwards - with the gold frame artwork breaking the three blocks
Plus the 2 lamps at different hights

🤣 I do regret it all every bit . I think it trial and error I fucked it up now need to change it and hopefully get it right . No one to help. Hopefully i will do something better this time.

Embrace the monochrome and go black and white?

Or make use of your silver lampshades:

Do you sit all evening with thr harsh overhead lights on then? I think you’ve very particular tastes, so it is difficult for people to advise.

Bright and airy. With minimal shadows

There are 5 at home and regular visitors from older children and GS

Yeah we like the console bit because the kids put there crap in there and it makes the end chair feel like an arm chair and gives a bit of personal space to the grumpy py teenager who does not want anyone near them .

I don't like rugs /coffee tables i like it to be a clear space . Its easier for me to sweep/clean and baby GS toddles about i would not want him to hit his head

Is this purely aesthetics?

If so, then previous poster is right - you need a rug and coffee table to ground the sofa in the space. As it’s so dark, you need complementary colours to make the sofa feel intentional and part of a wider visual scene. So perhaps some large black art frames, a light rug and black coffee table.

I don’t think taking a seat off the sofa will bring the room together and as it stands, it fits and is functional. Instead I’d be adapting your decor to incorporate and fall back in love with your sofa.
