Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

What he has just done and said is disgraceful. And illegal i think. But no one can challenge him.

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 30/01/2025 22:27

He’s worried about people being a danger when he’s the danger not only to America, but to the world. I had to actually rewind it back to see if I heard him correctly. He’s literally a walking contradiction.

Motharunner · 30/01/2025 22:27

In my job I’ve dealt with US Air traffic, and they’re generally entitled and incompetent compared to the UK.

They arrogantly talk down to international air craft, tell us to ‘sort ourselves out’ in terms of who is leaving the gate first, and are quite confusing with their instruction. If you ask again they’re just as billigerent the second time, and often repeat instruction too fast.

It’s not a DEI problem, it’s an arrogance problem, arrogance and air safety don’t mix.

Lilifer · 30/01/2025 17:07

Do you think people with "severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities" should be air traffic controllers?

Clearly they aren't - what he means is that they employ women and black people instead of the best white men.

The inference that this was caused (by Trump!!) by an inexperienced, unqualified and unsuitable person of diversity (woman, man, gay person, person with dwarfism, autism etc) is so incredibly offensive I don't know where to start with it.

Is this the world now?

It’s not the world. Just some people. I imagine lots of Trump voters will feel buyers regret a lot in the next four years.

Please look at the current investigation. There was one air traffic controller doing the job that is usually covered by two. This information isn’t difficult to find.

Aren't you pleasant. This is what I have seen:

When aircraft volume goes down, a supervisor can make the decision to combine two controller positions into one position. This happens routinely, and on Wednesday at Reagan Airport, it happened 40 minutes earlier than it normally does because the supervisor determined that the traffic was low enough to combine, according to a source with direct knowledge.

This position handles local arrivals into Reagan and helicopter traffic when it’s combined.

Reagan is not understaffed, the source added.

trumps speech on this. It is scary. He is a fascist dictator. I know that’s obvious if it’s obvious to me. America is going to be worse than china and North Korea. Obviously in a different way. And more powerful.

See I'm not sure America will be more powerful looking at his economic nouse

I’ll correct that for you. The best women and black people.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 30/01/2025 22:29

Any woman coming on here supporting Trump's 'best person for the job' rhetoric doesn't understand the systemic bias that underpins 'best person for the job'. Who set the hiring criteria, who makes the decisions, is the hiring process skewed to benefit certain people?

I'm only in my 50s and in my early career, it was still very much a man's world. Any woman finding herself in a managerial role was treated with suspicion. If she was relatively young and attractive, she must've got there by sleeping with the boss. If not, she must have been a 'diversity hire'.

With that one statement Trump has effectively undermined any worker, anywhere, who isn't a straight white Christian male. I can't believe there are women on here getting on board with it.

tobee · 30/01/2025 22:31

I think Trump and his administration are deliberately going for chaos.

MeTooOverHere · 30/01/2025 22:31

It seems the helicopter is probably at fault. And this from an ex military helicopter pilot, whose son was killed in the crash.

Because they don’t break the law? Because they consult and look at the consequences? I’d rather have slower movement that doesn’t cause almighty fuck ups to be honest.

I was about to say exactly the same.

It's because he doesn't give two shiny shits about how lawful his actions are.

I used to work for a very big company which got taken over by another company who were notorious for being bastards. Our new director told the managers that if we wanted to get rid of someone, to just sack them (I was a manager so I got this first-hand). Not to worry about the legality of it all, just get them out of the door, no following the proper performance management process. His logic was that very few of them would bother about tribunals or taking the company to court and the money that would be saved by getting rid of all the under-performing staff would be worth the handful of payouts that would have to be made.

I think Trump has the same shitty ethos. Do what the hell he wants, and if he has to row back on a few, no big deal. Plenty still gets through which wouldn't otherwise under a leader who was actually concerned with fairness and proper process.

Mind you, even for Trump this has been a whirlwind of shit! I think he's had time to stew on a few things and has been making a list of exactly how he plans on getting revenge/putting in his own ideas - and that's what he's doing now.

They were warned month ago that the airspace there was already tightly packed.

Why can’t other politicians do the same!

Because they are not law breaking narcissist lunatics?

AmateurNoun can you provide credible sources for this info?

Also as others have said questioning authority is quite an important factor in safety. There have been a number of accidents in the air and at sea where not questioning a pilot or captain of a ship led to catastrophe. Check out the Cautionary Tales podcast by Tim Harford for some examples including the Torrey Canyon, the Costa Concordia and the Tenerife air disaster. Air traffic controllers have to have authority and think fast under pressure not wait for commands when they are managing the flight paths of a number of aeroplanes at a time.

I'm not saying your story is true but I'm wondering if you are questioning the things you are being spoon fed and using critical judgement.

This is an X thread covering some of the questions in the questionnaire and it has a link to the court documents which include the questionnaire and the points for each answer so you can see the documents in question for yourself.

I still think it's unlikely that any of this caused the crash, but I also think this is the kind of thing that makes everyone hate DEI. I have no issue with characteristics being used as a tiebreaker in rare cases where 2 candidates are equally qualified.

He knows.

His statement was nothing to do with the tragedy, the victims or the facts. It was solely about Trump's agenda. His followers will believe whatever he tells them to. He knows this.

Ger1atricMillennial · 30/01/2025 22:37

In the most positive of terms I would say he is alluding to the fact in dangerous and stressful jobs, where 1000's of people lives are on the line there should be a very strict criteria for people to be able to perform highly under pressure. I have an anxiety disorder, and even if it was my absolute dream, my feelings and personal journey come a distant second to the lives and safety of others.

For example the show "The Good Doctor" pissed me off. The main character through his impariment was unable to keep up with the demands of being a surgeon. The only person who had the balls to tell him this, was overruled and sacked even though he was putting the safety of the patients above this guys ego.

However, I strongly doubt this has anything to do with this case and he is just using this horrendous tragedy to further support from his base. ATC are really put through the ringer in their trainings and that means training under incredible pressure (I thought they were only allowed to work 4 hours a day). I strongly suspect the most likely human cause would be understaffing, low pay, increased shifts...and overly crowded airspace as above. No doubt this could have been prevented, but when profit is over safety these incidents are innevitable.

I have no knowledge of this really but I also feel that he will use his power to help himself and his family. I would worry that his new love of bitcoin and cryptocurrency, that he previously was against and now with his new friend Elon might meant that he has knowledge that would allow him to transfer wealth to himself and family. But what on earth would I know. I just really don’t trust or like him. His speech on this awful air accident was incredibly insensitive and self serving.

I would like to think that no British Prime Minister or even Senior Politician (no matter what party they are from) would say something like this just after such a disaster happens.
