Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

surely blind application gets rid of all these issue?

I'll ask this again

Embarrassing .

Why do you need to be spoon fed constantly?

Go look

Believe me, I have.

Many people posted the same question to you.

Why is it embarrassing? Have you got a link or not @Atlasvue ?

Don't paraphrase, quote.

It was too tricky without going back pages. But that is what you were saying. To actively pick an under represented person deliberately over a more represented person would be unfair in your eyes.

So how would you pick between two equal candidates?

Isn’t head hunting just getting a selection of possibles though rather than the actual recruitment process? Presumably anyone not up to the job would get weeded out during the selection process. And the reason it’s hard to get full representation from all groups is precisely because of discrimination.

Of course they need to be matching most of the criteria (rarely do any candidates fulfil all btw), but if there aren't any other candidates coming through, often companies will end up choosing what is presented, especially if it's a long drawn affair.

Of course, at entry level there are aptitude tests which weed certain candidates out but most head hunting is for more experienced candidates so would typically not involve aptitude although may involve personality tests.

Are you guessing or have you seen this alleged anywhere? Genuine question. Everything I've seen suggests that the screening was only the elementary stage and that all other stages and training were subject to the same standards.

My assumption would be that the programme ended because of the pending legal action, and they didn't want the class action to expand?

A pending legal case isn’t why a programme shuts down. The case won’t be heard until later this year.

Dymaxion · 30/01/2025 22:03

He’s saying they might have been hired because they ticked a diversity box rather than because they were the best person for the job.

So US airspace might not be safe as a result ?

Well they work for a leading HH firm and I know several others in that industry too I'm not sure you know how HH works?
As you can imagine it's very hard to actively head hunt certain protected characteristic individuals (not everyone will state if they have autism or are gay etc) so it's fairly obvious, when you think about it, that it's incredibly hard.

This has been more of an issue - in terms of difficulty in building the long and short list - for some public company boards. Very very tricky!

’they’ - that’s what I’m objecting to. I don’t know this person. I don’t know whether they are honest. I don’t even know whether they exist. Do you have any evidence?

cranberrytart · 30/01/2025 21:52

If there was only one air traffic controller working that night, who did he say "Did you see that?" to after seeing the crash fireball?

I think the story is there was only one “tower” controller - that’s roughly speaking the individual who looks after aircraft pre -touchdown, on the runway, and also sequences take offs.

I’m only making a slightly educated guess here but in the same to room (visual control room?) there may well also have been a dedicated ground controller (looks after taxing traffic) and at least one assistant to help out with what might be called admin.

They haven't got an answer for this and get all aggro when anyone asks this question 🤷‍♀️

Keen to hear what he has done that is so great so far...have to admit I'm struggling to find anything.

Are you though?

There are Executive orders protecting children which you must have heard about. Others protecting the rights of women and girls to privacy and safety.

Protecting women's sports too.

He said he would do this but then shocked everyone by keeping his promises. That's so unlike politicians these days.

RedRosesParmaViolets · 30/01/2025 22:05

Actually they can..
Interview behind a screen and if necessary just use a voice disguise thing my dc had one for Xmas.

So you can't see any candidates and you can't tell the sex?

Where I work I have seen jobs stay vacant because none of the applicants were appointable. Re advertising then happens or a rethink of how to organise (e.g downgrade the role but add in more oversight elsewhere).

And you know this how? During his statement he has mentioned that he is aware of information that he will bring to peoples’ attention when appropriate. I do know that a lot of people are in jobs due to diversity and inclusion that might not be the best, due to fulfilling quotas. That does happen, and I believe people should be employed on merit, whatever their sex, race or disability. This isn’t too much of an issue with admin jobs, but would be a big problem if done at this sort of level where safety should be the priority and not fulfilling quotas. I guess we will see as it starts to unfold….

He said he’d release his tax returns when appropriate, everyone is still waiting

That it shouldn't even be a consideration.

I understand now why I thought it was not an intelligent question and yet others thought it was very impressive and it's because we have incompatible beliefs.

It wasn’t a consideration in the application and interview process, lets say.
You end up with two equally qualified and experienced abdicates who came through a totally fair process. One is aligned with the majority of your workforce in some way. One is from a different group, which is underrepresented in your organisation.
Which do you choose and why?

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 30/01/2025 22:06

In the Oval Office a bit ago, Trump was asked by a reporter if he will visit the crash site of the plane in DC. His response: "What's the site? The water? You want me to go swimming?"

Go ahead and do the work. It’s not difficult.

Your link:

The candidates in this program will receive the same rigorous consideration in terms of aptitude, medical and security qualifications as those individuals considered for a standard public opening for air traffic controller jobs.
Which means that people who apply need to meet the same standards as other ATC's

Participants in the program will receive up to one year of experience in an Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) with the potential to be appointed to a temporary ATCS position at the FAA Academy.

Which means they get experience to get into an academy

Is there a missing link about the programme?

tobee · 30/01/2025 22:07

I've just checked your posts on this thread @Atlasvue and I certainly can't see any links that you've provided about why the program ended.

A pending legal case isn’t why a programme shuts down. The case won’t be heard until later this year.

But it wasn't a single legal case - it's a class action. If the biographical testing had continued and the numbers in the class action increase, the payout would have substantially increased. If they'd continued with the testing and more candidates were excluded, they could have applied to join the class action.

I'd have thought they were potentially just covering their arses and limiting possible losses? Especially if they think their chances at trial are iffy.

I haven't found anything that suggests the programme led to unsuitable hires. The whole issue seems to be with who was excluded, rather than who was chosen.
