We have grapes in the fields near us. Someone planted a proper vineyard and now sell bottles of bloody gorgeous wine at £15 a bottle. More if you buy from other retailers. Ds1 treated us to a bottle a few weeks ago.

Trump is now suggesting eliminating FEMA.

In North Carolina, he said: "I'll also be signing an executive order to begin the process of fundamentally reforming and overhauling FEMA or maybe getting rid of FEMA, I think, frankly, FEMA is not good."

Talkinpeace · 24/01/2025 17:56

Getting rid of FEMA was in Project 2025
part of delegating everything down to the states

English whites are sublime.

I really wouldn't bother with the reds.

The government will still help the red states, blue states on the other hand

Not so sure about that. Already a lot of Red State federal educators are realising their jobs are toast.

It finally dawned on me last night. And it's so far out there that it's going to mark me out as a nut job.

These guys simply are not satisfied with all the money in the world at the moment. It's not enough. They are literally stealing from the future.

You could argue the rich have always been like that. But this is something new. They are going to create a world where all the future wealth drains into their pockets. Hence the sudden damascene approach to the currency-that-dare-not-speak-its-name. Through which they have already fleeced a few faithful - may as well start early.

DuncinToffee · 24/01/2025 18:30

He wants to see the water be released and come down into Los Angeles and throughout the state.

Including his golf course

Talkinpeace · 24/01/2025 18:49

Scarily many of the Blue states are much more financially resilient and thus will will raise state taxes and cover their costs
even California and Hawaii

The tiny population red states are absolutely screwed if a bad event happens
as they do not have the tax base and governance in place
(Houston floods anybody)

DuncinToffee · 24/01/2025 19:03

All whilst violent thugs are being released;

New on MSNBC: Dr. Anthony Fauci's security protections have been revoked and he has now hired his own security, a source familiar with the matter told NBC News.

prettybird · 24/01/2025 19:04

With the withdrawal of even reasonable federal support and infrastructure, you can see the seccesionist movements in (say) California increasing in popularity Shock. And individual states not wanting to handover funds to the federal government Hmm

The quote from The West Wing episode during the debate between Bartlett and Ritchie comes to mind: "Can we have it back please?" Wink

Talkinpeace · 24/01/2025 19:08

If rich blue states decided not to contribute to the federal departments the reds like
(military)
all hell would break loose
AND
Unlike the UK with HMRC Shipley collecting all PAYE
payroll taxes in the US are collected at state level

Financial Times reporting that Donald Trump insisted he was serious in his determination to take over Greenland in a fiery telephone call with Denmark’s prime minister last week

Some key bits of the article. He’s literally demanding an EU country, and NATO ally just cede land to him. [contains quote post or other embedded content]

Enough to treat both Trump and Musk for their delusions?

Talkinpeace · 24/01/2025 19:50

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom
According to New Scientist, only China has more rare earth metals than Greenland.
If drilling under the ice caps was allowed
China could be sidelined

I shall not comment on benefits to the world

California has the FIFTH largest economy in the world, behind the US, China, Germany, and Japan. It's ahead of India, UK, France, Italy, Canada and Brazil.

California right now GIVES more money to the federal govt than it receives in federal funds. This doesn't take into account emergency disaster relief, though.

California is the the largest agricultural producer in the US and its farmers and ranchers could feed the entire state, meaning that we wouldn't need to import food.

It's pretty accepted that CA, after a period of adjustment & currency stabilization, would be fine as an independent country. One of the main 'issues' would be what to do about the federal lands that are located in CA and establishing a currency.

Because of this, we're in a (hopefully) pretty good position to weather the next four years, economy wise. If Scrotus wants to threaten us with 'no federal funds', Gavin can always refuse to send state funds to DC and instead keep them 'in house'.

Is it just me or are they thinking, (somewhat logically I’m afraid) that Fauci et al can actually finance their own security so let them do that ? I mean, it will help cut the bill an’all… It’s beside the point that it’s entirely due to their work for the govt, so the govt should pay…

Fauci, Bolton, Milley etc. all had the temerity to question, oppose and (in some cases) publicly denigrate Trump, so he hates them and this is his spiteful, petty revenge. He doesn't give a monkey's if they can't afford security and would be more than happy if MAGA stooge decided to step in and 'clean up'.

The wilful cruelty of what he/they are trying to bring about is going to literally destroy the lives of so many US citizens.

I wonder if the scorched earth approach will backfire on Trump's administration?

The changes they are putting in place are going to negatively affect the lives of many unsuspecting people quite quickly I would have thought? Those (relatively sane?!) Republican voters who didn't think for one minute that they were going to find themselves in one of Trump's 'others' group?

You really need to research the night of the long knives. comes before the night of broken glass.

All will be fine

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/24/us/politics/trump-fires-inspectors-general.html?smtyp=cur&smid=bsky-nytimes

President Trump fired 17 inspectors general, the internal watchdogs who monitor federal agencies, on Friday night, capping a week of dramatic shake-ups of the federal bureaucracy focused on loyalty to the president, three people with knowledge of the matter said.

Surely people who voted for him must begin to see he is on a trail of destruction? Or do they just believe he's getting rid of the enemy within?

They are being told he is getting rid of the enemy within. Until no one speaks for them.

The US constitution was explicitly drafted to counter this sort of behaviour. However it relies on people doing their jobs. We should still be in the land where just because the President says, don't make it so. At some point things should go through congress.

UK survivors will recall how Theresa May and Boris Johnson hit the block of SCOTUK which struck down two unlawful decisions. I suspect that (as with the EO over the 14th) the same could happen here. The question then is how does this "immunity" SCOTUS invented play out. Because I can easily see an EO abolishing SCOTUS and nowhere left to run.

"I'm abolishing SCOTUS"
"You and whose ... oh, who are those armed men ?"
"Fuckity bye. You can take those gowns too, we won't need them."
"But you can't do that. It's not in the constitution."
"So ?"
"So, it's illegal"
"But I have immunity for all my official acts. This is an official act."
"But we've done so much for you ! "
"I'll send flowers to your families".
