Pronouns at work/being gender critical at work etc

Leafstamp · 22/01/2025 18:57

If you are a woman and have your pronouns in your email signature at work, can I ask why?

If you haven't given it much thought, are you open to being persuaded that, albeit in a small way, this practice of declaring pronouns is contributing to a movement that harms women, children and LGB people?

Equally, if you are already clued up on this and consider yourself a sex realist/gender critical are you able to be open about this at work and challenge instances were gender identity ideology is being unduly promoted? Do you find that others agree with you?

I work in a small company where none of this goes on, so I am curious.

I think some people do it to show support for the LGBTQ etc community OP.

I don't.
I don't care if others do.

I do wish there was less hate in the world.

I'm also a strong supporter of the rights of women and girls.

I don't support Trump.

People think they are supporting the LGBTQ community, but really it's just the T isn't it?

Radical trans ideology (and ideas stemming from "Q = Queer") is actually really homophobic, so people have got it wrong if they think they are supporting LGB people when declaring pronouns.

I just use it as a marker of my opinion of them 😂

Scutterbug · 22/01/2025 19:18

Doesn’t bother me at all if people have their pronouns in their signature, if anything it is helpful to know.

Would you be willing to answer this part from my OP?

People do it because they are scared.

Scared of not following the crowd? Or?

I agree with this. Lots of women are too scared to speak out about this. I am in my job.

It’s outrageous weaponised misogyny in plain sight. But then what hope is there when you’ve got female ‘useful idiots’ who will throw other women and girls under the bus to virtue signal their ‘allyship’ and say moronic things like ‘it doesn’t hurt anyone to put your pronouns’ 🙄

mynameiscalypso · 22/01/2025 19:48

I don't because we don't have control over our email signatures. I don't care if other people do. Like @Scutterbug says, it can be helpful especially if you've not met the person before and can't tell from their name.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 22/01/2025 19:51

I'm not sure it'll be around as standard much longer - my (US Tech Corporate) workplace completely reversed their position and removed the option to add pronouns to the signature a few months back as there's so much research showing doing so is found harmful even by the Trans community, which begs the question why was it started in the first place. It seems like a 'well-intentioned' DEI strategy that was never thought through, and companies have just attached themselves too.

Agree with others though - it may not have been the intention but it makes life a lot easier trying to figure out if 'Alex' is male/female before you meet them in person!

Kpo58 · 22/01/2025 19:52

I personally wouldn't do it, but it can be useful in knowing how to address someone if you are unsure of their sex from their name. Just asking if they are male/female seems rather rude.

I had to do it at one school I worked in but didn't in my last one which was a Church school and I haven't been asked to at the one I am at now.

We were all asked to do it when we added the same footer to our emails.

onetrickrockingpony · 22/01/2025 19:54

I am in a senior position and I did not encourage it at work whereas I could have implemented or started the policy.

We have one non binary person at work and they put They in their sigs but they’re the only one. I’ve never felt any pressure to roll it out. I did think about it though.

Instead I look people up on LinkedIn if I’m unsure as to whether to use male or female pronouns.

HOW have I never thought of checking LinkedIn 😂 I always faff about far too long trying to guess.

onetrickrockingpony · 22/01/2025 19:57

@LittleRedRidingHoody yep. LinkedIn, company website, and failing that waiting to speak on the phone.

So, a woman that uses a pro noun automatically has to be one of those things? She can't just be a woman who is happy for other people to know she's a woman? How ridiculous

Latenightreader · 22/01/2025 19:59

I don't, but I have no problem if others do, and have done in conferences/zoom calls when it was requestedof everyone. I work with someone whose pronouns are not immediately obvious and it was really helpful to see she/her on her signature so I didn'tneed to ask. If it makes it easier for people who it isn't clear, or have non-obvious pronouns, I'm happy to include them.

To be fair, there's nothing wrong with just waiting until the call/I meet someone. I'm just very nosey and get thrown if I'm expecting a man and it's a woman (or vice versa!)

onetrickrockingpony · 22/01/2025 20:01

@Shmee1988 why is it relevant to the woman’s work correspondence whether she is a woman or not? Why is it necessary to make bring someone’s sex or gender or fantasy into an email about last month’s accounts?

I'd disagree with that. I work with someone who is very butch, and it really wasn't clear if she was female or male. Her pronouns are in her signature and clarify things.

Not ridiculous IMO.

I’d assume one of those three categories applies.

I don't put pronouns in my signature and would really try to avoid this.
I think many people just do it because they are not understanding that this signals acceptance of gender ideology. I always note who does and who does not have pronouns in their email. I've noticed it's far more common for women to have them.

One of the reasons I avoid it is because I have to negotiate and persuade as part of my job, and research shows that men get more favourable responses than women in these situations, so I don't want to do anything to draw attention to my sex.

Not particularly helpful if it’s they/ them like so many of this special group like to use.
