I always find this fascinating.

AI holidays
Period features
SUVs
Buying new baby clothes/decorating a nursery.

What else?

Yes. As a dyslexic (who thanks their lucky stars for spell check but things can sometimes slip through the net) having a poster sometimes make their only contribution to a thread a pick apart of my spelling really doesn't make me feel great.

I once read a thread by a young girl having a problem and asking for advice bless her she made so many spelling mistakes and got absolutely ripped apart in the comments.

Another reason for poor grammar is a rough childhood with parents so off the rails it's impossible to focus on school work. Seemed to be the case with her honestly people can be cruel

awkigydrs · 19/01/2025 09:14

Marrying your high school sweetheart. Doesn't matter how happy you are, or how many decades you have under your belt, it's a "shame". Comical in amongst all the horrific dating and unhappy marriage threads, but there we go, it's "a shame".

Christ. Yet another fucking stupid generalisation.

MN is not a hive mind. It is individual posters with individual views.

Miserable cunts who take everything too seriously.

Having a dog that you leave for longer than about 2 hours (even if it's asleep and perfectly happy-in those cases you are still an animal abuser and traumatising the poor Dog you just don't know it).

Oh yes and buying a dog even if it’s from a reputable breeder. Especially if it’s a breed like a Cockapoo.

The appearance of other women because their style is different.

Everything must be cotton or silk.

The number of sex partners another woman has had.

Non-tippers
People who earn under 30K
Young parents

And by young parent, they think that parents in their 20s are basically children having children.

madamweb · 19/01/2025 09:42

Some of these things aren't snobbery though.

Snobbery is disliking an accent or being rude about spelling or children's names or the decor of a house.

It's not snobbery to dislike vaping (which is harmful and horribly antisocial). It's not snobbery to dislike cheap fast fashion from Shein. It's not snobbery to dislike dogs bred to look a certain way which is miserable and unhealthy for them.

Have you stopped buying petrol?

Yes, we have an EV.

NiceCutRoundDomeDormice · 19/01/2025 10:23

Driving. Anyone who can’t drive is virtually sub-human - or at best a lazy thicko in a crap job. (I’ll send back both my degree certificates and swap them for a driving licence then, shall I? Although how I’ll be able to afford a car when I lose the management job those degrees got me, I don’t know.)

“Cool wives”. Oh no, it couldn’t possibly be me who’s got it wrong by searching through my husband’s phone, deciding whether I’ll “let” him go out and throwing a shit fit if he’s 15 minutes later than he said coming home - no, it’s these dreadful women trying to impress men.

Leasehold properties. Yeah, let’s dismiss them all as utterly worthless based on a couple of examples you’ve read about on the BBC website.

Any dress that gives even a vague hint to your figure. If it’s not a high-necked long-sleeved sack, it’s “dated”.

Yes, we have an EV.

And you’ve stopped buying anything made with or transported by petrol?

I’m being silly because I know you haven’t. It would be impossible unless you’ve gone back to the Stone Age.

wfhwfh · 19/01/2025 10:47

Gender reveals and new builds. I’m not a fan of either, but in real-life, I’ve met some people who see new builds as quite aspirational.

Edited

I'm a property lawyer. I don't know any property lawyers who would buy a leasehold property if they had a choice. It's not a "couple of examples on the BBC website" ..

Yes you’re right it would be! So doing stuff like choosing not to go on holiday in the UAE is a good happy medium.

Thesnoozingsighthound · 19/01/2025 11:08

Some of these I’m confused as to whether the MN hive mind is supposed to have decreed these as good or bad.

I keep seeing All Inclusive holidays and Centre Parcs listed, but I would have said lots of MN loves them. I had never really heard much about either in real life until joining MN.

Based on a thread yesterday…double beds!

Marriage proposals
Unmarried mothers…especially if SAHMs
SAHMs in general
Foreign weddings
Foreign hen dos
Living close enough to your mum to pop in
Wearing heels (so 1996)
Celebrating adult birthdays

I think the concern about SAHMs who aren't married isn't about snobbery, it's the lack of financial protection they have for themselves.

awkigydrs · 19/01/2025 11:12

And lots of people happily live in them for very valid reasons (me!...new builds, not gender reveals, totally with you on gender reveals!)

Indeed. In fact if the mum is the higher earner and has greater assets I would probably see her as wise to stay unmarried. But an unmarried SAHM without independent wealth is in a very vulnerable position

@CrowleyKitten

a chicken stock pot makes my cheese sauce so rich and silky, and everyone says it's delicious

🤣 presumably you aren't feeding this to any vegetarians then!

AI holidays being a cheap nasty peasant thing to do was a shock to me. I mean when I was growing up we were actual cheapskate peasants and never went on holiday unless it was camping in a tent lol.
It took me years to save up for my first all inclusive and then to come on Mumsnet and see it's considered a thing broke people do? 🤣

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/01/2025 11:24

@echt

No news to be rude or pick on that particular poster. Of course anything raised here will be generalisations . I think the thread is meant to be 'lighthearted'.
