I always find this fascinating.

AI holidays
Period features
SUVs
Buying new baby clothes/decorating a nursery.

What else?

It took me years to save up for my first all inclusive and then to come on Mumsnet and see it's considered a thing broke people do?

This is part of the reverse snobbery we see on MN, things like new builds, new cars, hot tubs, en-suites, branded clothes, polished decor, things that were perhaps unattainable for many people years ago but do take money and effort to achieve, it's like some of the wealthier ones get annoyed when the plebs are obtaining higher quality lifestyles and it irks them. They need to show new money how common they are "no darling I don't like GREY, we have mismatched furniture because we don't have to give a shit" scoff scoff. Or of course "it's all on credit".

Not all petrol is made /derives from the UAE.

You’re right. It would be more effective to protest against oil production and terrorist financing by boycotting holidays in America.

It's hardly reverse snobbery to dislike the all grey look. Straightforward snobbery perhaps.

All-grey is this eras."avocado bathroom suite" . Its going to look wildly dated soon.

What is wrong with a Whippet who lives with a cat?

Whippets and Cats live together well, as long as the Whippet knows the cat is in charge, all is well.

My friend has three Whippets, a cat and a large Bunny. The Bunny rules the garden, and the Cat rules the house. The three Whippets are very respectful of the cat and bunny.

That’s lovely to hear actually. It’s apparently the pray drive in the whippets, I’ve never had an issue. They’ve all been raised together from when they were tiny, never had a problem. The dog knows that the Russian blue rules the house

@madamweb yes true, I meant more having the luxury to spend money to design an aesthetic which certainly when I was growing up was a preserve for the well off, now we sneer at what can be very expensive refurbishments because they've been done in a "common" way.

I don’t think I have ever seen a thread where Londoners criticise other areas to be fair many the other way round. When I moved to London in my twenties I was surprised how socially acceptable it was for people to slag off London to my face but it would have been extremely rude and unacceptable for me to say the same things about the city I was moving from. Only works one way.

I think you are particularly noticing this because you live in London.

Try living in a working class town in the Midlands and you will see that there is plenty of other snobbery around places .

Yes , I think that's a fair and valid comment.

RampantIvy · 19/01/2025 11:51

You clearly haven't read any of the threads that I have where some Londoners are very sniffy about northerners @TheaBrandt

To be fair it is always the same few posters who are rude.

Spidey66 · 19/01/2025 11:56

Dogs
Landlords

TheaBrandt · 19/01/2025 12:50

I had numerous people really criticise London to my face when I said I was moving there. Normally polite work colleagues. If I had mirrored back what they said about London about their home town it would be seen as unkind and rude. Honestly it’s really weird once you notice it! No axe to grind as moved out of London now myself.

I'm a property lawyer. I don't know any property lawyers who would buy a leasehold property if they had a choice. It's not a "couple of examples on the BBC website" ..

But as a property lawyer, surely you know it’s not quite the path to impending doom some people on here seem to think it is?

Deathraystare · 19/01/2025 13:00

Bayliss and Harding

I am ok with this!!! I don't like either.

Well, I certainly wouldn't ever purchase a leasehold property

I remember once advising someone to steer clear when she was considering an investment. She was unsure still so spoke to several other property professionals (various disciplines ) and they all said the same thing.

The only time I would even vaguely consider it is if it was a small building and each leaseholder owned a share of the freehold. But even then I would opt for straightforward freehold every time if I had the choice

You only have to look at the cladding scandal to get a sense of the issues.

Aren't these just the standard differences between an upper middle class household and a working class household though...?

In an area with a high proportion of academics it sticks out a mile who's new money and who's middle class academia and genuinely doesn't give a shit about black windows designer kitchen, wet room and hot tub. It doesn't irk the middle classes, they just find it funny.

I think it’s a bit of a “chicken or egg?” scenario. A lot of people have convinced themselves that Londoners believe there’s nothing worth seeing in the rest of the country - I know, because I used to think Londoners thought like that before I moved here! So then a defensiveness kicks in where people become eager to bash London.

The problem is that, if someone says they love living in London because of the theatres, museums and history, you’ll have people queuing up to sneer “We do have theatre and culture out here in the sticks, you know” and trying to claim London is just a busier, more expensive version of the rest of the UK. It’s not like that. Of course people who live in London know theatre doesn’t stop when you leave the M25. I’ve been to fantastic productions at the Birmingham Hippodrome, the Manchester Palace, the Edinburgh Playhouse. But it’s ridiculous to try to claim that a catching a great touring production when it’s in town as the same as being able to pick from 20 or 30 shows any night of the week, because it just isn’t! Any more than I’d tell someone who loves living deep in the countryside that they should live in London and just get the Central Line to Epping Forest every so often.

Universities "Russell Group" or don't bother.

As if 'Russell Group' were anything more meaningful than a clever marketing device.

Pancakes with Gravy

I think that would be perfectly reasonable ! Who on earth eats pancakes with gravy ?

Point proven.

RampantIvy · 19/01/2025 16:05

Believe me @NiceCutRoundDomeDormice some Londoners genuinely think that it is a cultural desert outides of the M25.

Some members of my well educated family were like that.

When I lived and worked in London I went to the theatre as regularly as I do now here in Yorkshire.

Coldanddamp · 19/01/2025 16:58

Are they actually Londoners though? It's a bit like "Londoners are rude", the rudies tend to have moved there in their 20s & think they have to act like Jason Statham now they are in the big smoke.

My family members are, yes. Born and bred.

Coldanddamp · 19/01/2025 17:03

There are loads of born & bred Londoners who haven't even been to the theatre themselves so wouldn't say it's a commonly held view.

ruethewhirl · 19/01/2025 17:28

Brightly coloured/patterned clothes. Apparently they're for children.
