How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???

We are in a rental tonight and I feel like im in a small box trap with my husband way too close!

How does anyone sleep with another person so close and so little space to move about and stretch???

Double implies it’s a bed for two people but a double bed is definitely not designed for two people who have reached adulthood.

We have always had a double, we now have a dog who sleeps in it with us. Sleeping in a king sized bed I always feel so far away from him although some nights when he’s snoring that could be a blessing

When we stay in a hotel with a double it's hell, we have a super king at home, even my teenager has a king bed to himself! I am a big advocate of getting the biggest bed you can comfortably get in a room, sleep is too important!

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 18/01/2025 09:03

We have a double, never thought there were so few people that had one! We manage fine even though DH is 6' 2 and I'm 5'10 (we are slim though, to answer a PP's query)

Actually, there's probably enough room for 3 people in our double bed as we barely move in the night and coild fit another adult between us!

Daisy12Maisie · 18/01/2025 09:20

A couple I knew at uni stayed in her single bed together every night of the 3 years. They now have a 4 bed house and 2 kids and have their own rooms! I think people need more space over time but new couples don't. They are both slim so that's not what I mean. They don't physically need more space.

TiramisuThief · 18/01/2025 09:28

We went from a double to a super king when we bought a new bed. We were going to go for a king but we had the room so why not

Have never slept better. The best money we've spent on anything in the house.

I will always book a minimum of a king size on holiday. I don't sleep well in a double now so staying with friends and family in their spare room is usually an ordeal.

DH is big and we normally sleep in a super king. We spent the last month sleeping in a double. It was fine.

At fil's the spare room has an old, very soft double mattress that dips in the middle. Dh rolls snoringly into it so I'm perched on the edge of the bed fending him off with one foot and the other foot on the floor so I don't roll out.

AND the sky light doesn't have a blackout blind so it's wake up at LITERAL sparrow fart.

I come home physically, mentally and emotionally broken.

Do we have the same in-laws? 🤔
My in-laws spare bed is a double, but soft and very high off the ground. I'm always perched on the edge, holding on, as so worried about falling out. The room has a security light, which flashes constantly ALL night long. They also don't have proper curtains, just nets! Even with an eye mask on, its SO annoying.

Wind the clock back 40+ years. College years. Two of us happily slept in a single bed.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 18/01/2025 10:01

We slept on a double bed for years and it was fine. We got a king size when we moved to this house and it felt too big. Then we got a Labrador and it no longer feels big enough 😂🙈.

DaDaDoDaiDa · 18/01/2025 10:01

When I first left home, my partner and I had a second-hand 3/4 size bed (4 foot wide) because it was all we could afford ... it felt amazingly spacious after two years squashed into single beds (he was over 6' tall)😆

In other words, it depends what you are used to!

Ah. I remember when I was so in love I could sleep in a single happily. Well, I vaguely remember 😂

Yeah same here. Not a bother on us in DH’s single in his tiny flat. Now a King doesn’t seem big enough!

2 single beds pushed together

Single duvet on each bed in matching covers.

Bliss

This is a good solution. Also, you can have the mattress you prefer. Also, I might be wrong, but single mattresses seem to be cheaper? Like 2 singles rather than one super king?

the80sweregreat · 18/01/2025 10:14

I can't bear beds that are not ' high up '
Who wants to sleep amongst the dust on a low mattress ?

You can still be as close as you want to in a king or superking - except it's then an active choice rather than having no alternative but to cling on to avoid tumbling out!!

This is a very fair point. Guess it's just the bed linen thing that's holding me back!

My mother's spare room beds are dreadful. She still has my old bed and I'm 64. I refuse to risk my back and book an hotel when I visit and have suggested I buy a new bed (cheaper over 2/3 visits) but she resists whilst getting irked every time I stay at an hotel. in truth it saves me from losing my shit with step

CrushingOnRubies · 18/01/2025 10:51

We have a king size. But " my"room we stay in at my parents is a double. It's a squish. Perfect size when I slept in the same bed as teenager

ShowAndGo · 18/01/2025 10:54

DH insisted on a double for our room rather than the kingsize we could have had. He likes to 'feel close'. He also snores.

I make sure the spare room is always made up, but often wake up to find he's followed me in the small hours, like a lost dog, and is snoring away there too. Hmm

GroovyChick87 · 18/01/2025 10:56

We've always had a double and it's only been a problem when the kids were younger and used to squeeze in.

You must really love him. That would drive me mad.

We bought a superking because we had a cat and we naively thought it would give us all enough room.

It's amazing how much space one small tabby can take up.

I'm happy with the double we've got, no idea why people are struggling so much when it seems fine to us - the hardest thing is the cat, she likes to sleep on my legs then I'm trying to get comfortable without disturbing her and she takes up so much space right in the middle of my side

(Even worse is she is ACE at knowing the time, she miaows at me to wake me, this morning a mere four minutes before my phone alarm went off - weekend alarm time is different from weekdays plus it only takes her a couple of days to get used to the clocks changing, it's totally uncanny!)

I share a double with my gf but couldn't with my bf.

When she stays here we all squeeze into a queen. Top of the list for when we finish the loft conversion is a bigger bed!

Wait... do your bf and gf know of the existence of each other?

Sounds like the size of bed might not be the main issue here Grin

We have a double bed with king size duvet and we tend to sleep mostly facing away from each other. We've never thought we were crowded in bed to be honest.

This plus one dog, occasionally two!

I took 'we all squeeze into a queen' to mean that the BF and GF were more than aware of each other's existence 😃

5ft6 and 6ft3, average size adults and a border collie that can open the door so decides to join us on the bed sometime after 6am when the first alarm in the house has gone off and someone's let the dog out. No problem on size, but we do cuddle a lot
