Op: I’m starting a new role where the dress code is business smart. I’ve only ever worn jeans and T-shirts in previous jobs. Help please
Comment: I’ve always wfh so only wear loungewear

Op: John Doe has died, that’s so sad.
Comment: I’ve never heard of John Doe

Op: Lunch ideas please. I’m unable to eat bread or legumes.
Many many comments: I have beans on toast. Lentil soup is my go to. I love pita & hummus. Just make a sandwich.

On and on and on 😩

For me, it's the ones hours after the OP has updated the thread.

My husband has not come home from a night out - posted around 1am ish. Response 2 days later - call the police hun 🙄

MarkingBad · 20/01/2025 15:43

Ahh I've written some of these comments and posts so apologies for my part in making some of you roll your eyes.

For me the worst are the ones who read the OP but nothing further not even the remaining OP posts and then comment even though there have been 900 comments previously and offer advice which was taken and or acted upon days or even weeks ago.

Or

OP - I (or "my friend") had/am having affairs with married men whose wives are my friends and now the latest one just left me and my life has just ended

Following posters - OP you are not friends to these mens wives but I'll try and help you with some general advice

Several posts in - Oh you poor thing I don't understand why you are getting so much hate from these awful posters, it's not yout fault and you owe those married women friends of yours nothing.

And on a personal basis

Poster - You don't sound like you have any empathy you should work on that (much smugness follows)

Me - you are spot on with that I don't have any empathy

Poster - You need to go and do something about that, followed by medium to long cringy post on needing to practise self reflection to help you be a better person

Me - (thinks) you just wasted your time there, I just told you I couldn't give a fuck what you think

faithbuffy · 20/01/2025 16:09

Facebook is as bad

Post a photo of a top in a FB group and say "I've just seen this in next, £15 in loads of colours"

Comments
"Where from hun"
"Did they have any other colours?"
"How much?"

Confused

Op - AIBU
Everyone - Yes
Op - no I'm not

This is one of the responses I hate to be honest because half the time people haven’t read the OP properly and just lay in. I don’t care if three hundred rabid MNetters think I’m unreasonably; I’ll listen to the fifty who calmly read my posts and have a grain of intelligence thanks.

CountingDownToSummer · 20/01/2025 17:48

@itstoocoldtoday so if the fifty posters you listen to also say YABU you'd still say you weren't or would you only listen to the 50 posters if they agreed with you?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/01/2025 17:53

TossieFleacake · 17/01/2025 12:07

Or .....

Third post down decides to quote the OP in full, despite the fact that everyone reads the OP and they NEVER need to be quoted.

everyone reads the OP.

I wouldn't be so sure of that myself.

itstoocoldtoday · 20/01/2025 17:55

It isn’t so much about them agreeing with me as listening.

If three hundred posters pile on, tell me what an awful parent I am for letting a four week old sleep alone (when I said four months!) then no I won’t listen.

If fifty posters don’t necessarily agree with me but are polite and reasonable and nuanced in their responses then those are the ones I listen to.

CountingDownToSummer · 20/01/2025 18:06

@itstoocoldtoday this is it exactly, the 50 you listen to might make you think YABU so you wouldn't be saying YANBU.
It's the posters who post, thinking they are right with no intention of thinking they may be wrong so posting in AIBU is pointless and wasting everyone's time, including the op's.
There are lots of other topics they could post on rather than AIBU

Fizbosshoes · 20/01/2025 19:24

Often in AIBU the first few answers set the tone for the thread, if one person picks up on a certain point (often not even actually part of the AIBU), then lots of posters follow suit. The polls often don't bear any resemblance to the typed responses!

Or instant thread-ruiner - third comment says something factually wrong, then every other post points that out.

SatinHeart · 20/01/2025 23:38

OP: my child started nursery a few months ago and has had a steady stream of coughs/colds/bugs ever since. When will it start to get better?

Someone always has to reply with:

Oh how odd. My DC had 4 years at nursery and only got a slight runny nose once. I wonder what you are doing wrong? Try giving them a multivitamin and cutting out all UPFs and screen time.

SirChenjins · 21/01/2025 06:34

The sanctimonious ‘can you say why you think that’. I just did, you prat - but now what you want me to do is give you a detailed essay so you can spend the next few posts picking it apart. Go and find someone else to argue with, I cba to explain myself over and over again n order to justify my opinion on some mundane matter.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 21/01/2025 07:42

WellsAndThistles · 17/01/2025 16:56

OP - Should I go to A&E (even though I'm well enough to post on MN)

Everyone- Yes definitely A&E NOW

Never anyone - Unless you are actually dying right now, just call NHS24....

Not just this but the people who say an OP can’t really be ill if they’re posting on MN - only for them to update days later that they had emergency surgery for a perforated bowel and were septic (or similar situation)

MangoAndMelon · 21/01/2025 07:53

Do you remember the batshit bat thread?
Op: "I am in the US and we have situation with bat, waiting for test, DH killed it after it was injured so now waiting for rabies test results. I am worried"
100 posters "he should be in prison! It's illegal to kill bats in UK!"
Few posters "op is not in UK. Hope test is negative, OP!"
100 posters "how were we supposed to know?!"

I also hate "NC for this". Fine, change your name. I don't care. I understand people want to change their name for lots of reasons. But why do you have to shout about it? No-one will know. No-one cares. Is it just to subtly say, I'm not new, I know how MN works?

People declare they've changed their name because some saddos on here like to look back at the OPs posting history to determine if they're real of not. If it's a NC they don't have any post history, so they're immediately branded a troll. It took me ages to work out that's what it's for. I particularly loathed when people would start a post with "NC for this but been here for years, screaming in the vatican, darked on, penis beaker etc"

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 21/01/2025 13:00

This isn't a comment but I think still belongs here!

People who vote against the majority in AIBU, but don't justify themselves in the thread!

I was just reading a thread where someone’s neighbours had made ridiculous requests of the OP to accommodate their outdoor cat. Voting was 5% YABU - but everyone in the thread was saying the neighbour was nuts and OP was not being at all unreasonable. So where are these 13 people who voted the other way?! I suppose a couple will probably be people accidently clicking the wrong thing. I did wonder if it might be trolls but surely a troll would want to start and argument rather than just clicking a button that says they disagree and then disappear?!

MaltipooMama · 21/01/2025 15:17

I've got one (apologies if it's already been said!)

OP - we have definitively decided on the name Amy for our baby but would like opinions on a middle name, which do you prefer: Hazel, Jessica or Freya
Comments - I don't like Amy, what about Jean for a first name?

all names created for illustrative purposes 😂

CarefulN0w · 21/01/2025 15:31

An idea being brought up for the 3,000th time by a poster thinking they are original because they have RTFT. Arghhhhhh.

Can't say I do. But did you read the thread about the little boy who left his toy rabbit in a hotel? Mum put out an sos and a lovely poster nearby went and collected it. All going well until it descended into a crazy argument between two posters about going back in time and killing Hitler. Both random and batshit.

Half the time there will be a post somewhere saying g, "I voted YABU because it's ridiculous you even care about this issue".

DaDaDoDaiDa · 22/01/2025 07:28

😆Further to my earlier post - @HeffalumpsAndWoozlesAreHoneyRobbingTwats who was struggling to get the concept - see this thread and someone posting global Top 10 hit (and also used in an advert )song 'Birdhouse in Your Soul'. I rest my case

Rapidly rising to the top of the annoying list: "Use your words." Stupid, patronising, over-simplifying slogan that ignores the vast amount of nonverbal communication everyone (including people who say it) uses and interprets daily, or that words can be twisted and misinterpreted too, either by mistake or by design.
