Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

I’m 25 but I have no social media, all I do on my phone is look at mumsnet or check my emails.. I only listen to smooth radio and I mostly wear woolly jumpers. I am ready to be an old lady now

DustyLee123 · 16/01/2025 20:43

I like Fenjal too, and still wear blue or green eye liner.

catlesslady · 16/01/2025 20:45

My favourite supposedly old lady items are:

  • Big pants (do I get extra points because they are home sewn??)
  • Skirted swimsuits (I like the look, feel less self conscious and don't need to worry as much about hair regrowth, in my opinion they are overdue a come back)
  • Sherry. No idea why this divine drink seems to be reserved for old ladies and Christmas- I can only assume that at some point in history there was a shortage and clever older women created a rumour that it was unpleasant and unattractive so that they could keep it all for themselves.
  • Flat shoes and comfy sandals- haven't knowingly worn shoes that I could not comfortably walk a few miles in for over a decade and can't think what took me so long

My MIL (mid 70s) would not be seen dead with any of the above.

TheYeaSayer · 16/01/2025 20:45

Yardley! The body spray and powder! I remember the Lily of the valley one in my granny's bathroom as a child. I like all the varieties.
I also knit and crochet, like a nice cup of tea from a pot with a teacosy (that I knitted) and big comfy knickers. I'm 55 now. I've used blue Nivea since I was 12.
My mum is 77 and far, far cooler than me!

frozendaisy · 16/01/2025 20:46

I like champagne

TaylorGuitar · 16/01/2025 20:47

Oh I love this.

I had never heard of Embassy shoes... I now need some!!

And yes to

NT properties
Really good gravy
Radio 4
Matinees
Big pants
Having a really detailed look at stuff in museums
Only using Zebra pens
Being driven to places

How good is it to find a whole group of people who like, value and enjoy this stuff??!!

Auburngal · 16/01/2025 20:49

Full briefs - can’t be doing with thongs
Stodgy puddings - syrup sponge, apple crumble (has to be DM’s homemade more apple) with custard

Crikeyalmighty · 16/01/2025 20:50

@MrsSethGecko ha, I've caught my H watching that a few times - I do remember it - like crossroads - but Lorry's rather than a motel !!

DawnBreaks · 16/01/2025 20:51

Instead of instantly binning the 'Easylife' leaflet that's always tucked in the middle pages of magazines, I find myself perusing portable urinals, stretch armrest covers, pain relief gloves and elasticated bra extenders, while making small approving noises. I suppose magazine reading generally is an old lady habit!!

HellofromJohnCraven · 16/01/2025 20:52

I also discovered marks and sparks butterscotch sweeties in a little box, so always have those on me, for the dry throat caused by the blood pressure tablets.
Made me realise that Werthers should probably be sponsored by candersaten

TheseCalmSeas · 16/01/2025 20:53

39 and recently got into Sudoku.

I also like getting into bed at half 8, asleep by 10. LOVE an early night.

Knittedfairies2 · 16/01/2025 20:55

I don't like going 'out' when it's dark. I'll go out for lunch, but not dinner. (It was my birthday earlier this week and someone asked if I thought my husband would be taking me out for a birthday dinner; I said I hoped not... but I am over 70 so I am an old lady)

BigDahliaFan · 16/01/2025 20:55

I’ve aways Preferred a tea shop to a club….especially when I’m in a club.

or an old man’s pub, with dogs.

never liked heels.

Eyesopenwideawake · 16/01/2025 20:55

61 & 1/2. Haven't worn knickers of any shape or size since my hysterectomy 13 years ago. Sleep naked. Buzz cut bleached blonde.

Wear Crocs summer and winter (hangover from bunionectomy, also had a partial thyroidectomy - bits of me slowly being chipped off).

Hate Nick Ferrari, agree furiously with (most of) what James O'Brien says. Drive waaay too fast, still mourning the lockdown induced sale of my beloved but ancient Porsche.

Recently took up nude modelling. Desperate to do more travelling before I can't.

I loooooove parmaviolet sweets.

Me too... and I have violet biscuits, so awesome.
I wish to dye my hair lilac, DH won't go for it. Haven't quite got to that zero fuck stage

Butterflytown · 16/01/2025 20:56

Long thermal vests to keep my back warm
hot water bottles (I use one pretty much every night from September to april)
Electric blanket to warm the bed
horlicks
heated throw/ any blanket when sitting on the sofa
sketchers trainers ( didn’t realise these were old lady ones tbh)
scarves- when I had shingles (an old lady illness), I got in the habit of wearing them as the rash was all down my neck and I think became a comfort thing
wrapping up warm-hate it when I see people out in shorts/ without coats/ scarves gloves when it’s cold
an afternoon nap if I get chance
sherry
hanging washing out on the line
heating things up on the hob rather than using a microwave
puzzles
Big comfy knickers

I’m 43. Currently sat in my living room in a dressing gown and scarf with a heated blanket. Not because it’s cold, it’s 21.5 degrees, but I like to feel cosy :)

WHAT SORCERY IS THIS?! 😱 You can get heated gloves?! SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! 🚪

I need these! I am tapping at the door of 60, and me hands are booking freezing half the time between mid November and mid March.

Rushes to google!

My recommendation is to not waste your time on the ones that just heat your palms - the fingers are where you need the heat!

overthinkersanonnymus · 16/01/2025 20:57

I also always love to have good look through the Kleeneze catalog when it lands on my doorstep. I bought an egg timer from there that tells you how soft your egg is. It's fantastic!

orangetriangle · 16/01/2025 20:58

diary
calendar
jigsaw puzzle
technophobe
furry slippers
very thin hair
still playing cds
TV times at xmas
daily nap
thermal top when it's cold
furry hat when it's cold
sketcher boots
watch with hands

that being said I love all the modern clothes certainly don't dress like an old lady have my hair eyebrows and nails done!!
will be 56 next week!!

lifeonmars100 · 16/01/2025 20:59

Summerhillsquare · 16/01/2025 20:25

Anoraks, cardigans, capacious pants in the bedroom. Heated blanket, pouffe, Downton Abbey in the living room. Comfort is all.

Comfort is my religion 😇

orangetriangle · 16/01/2025 21:00

also 2 heated blankets 1 on bed and 1 on sofa numerous fluffy socks and thermal gloves

Snowmanscarf · 16/01/2025 21:00

Oh god I've just realised I'm the same about going out in the dark!
I have always had lots of old lady habits - The Archers, gardening, charity shops. I do mix it up with a bit of sex and drugs and rock'n'roll occasionally though (in the summer only when it stays light longer)

morden123 · 16/01/2025 21:01

Just been looking at holiday cottages and if the chairs don't look comfy they're off the list!! Also like another poster mentioned must have good quality bedding and cold pillowcases. Also wear crocs and sketchers and cups must be white colour. Am sitting at the moment on recliner, the best buy ever! am 64 though

LivingOnTheVeg · 16/01/2025 21:01

I used to get a Kriss Kross book for helping my mum do the weekly shop when I was about 10! I didn’t realise that was so abnormal. Blush
