It is a bit worrying that there is so much support for Reform. And that Labour isn't polling higher. But they have four and a half years to turn things around, I suppose!

DuncinToffee · 14/01/2025 08:48

This is one of Reform's bright ideas

They want to go back to the the gold standard for currency, abandoned in 1931 and want to prohibit quantitative easing.

(This was the bill they introduced when struggling to read out names)

I can only conclude that a lot of the Reforms ticket is all about an older, whiter demographic. Nostalgia fest.

I think they will become more popular than the Conservatives so long as Badenoch chases their agenda. Which is all she does. Jenrick humiliated her last week. She has no authority

The unfavourability of Musk grew to 71%

I consistently blame the MSM for some of Labour's unpopularity. I think they did extremely well to win the GE despite the dross published about them over the years.

Yes I mean it's heartening how much of a twat my fellows think he is.

countrygirl99 · 14/01/2025 08:59

Return to the gold standard worked so well in the 1920s. Era of unadulterated prosperity. Well, in Reform minds anyway.

bombastix · 14/01/2025 09:03

Badenoch going the full ticket and declaring grooming gangs to have peasant origins.

Ludicrous woman; her team spent all weekend thinking on that. She needs better advice because her competition (Jenrick and Farage) can just be more extreme and more credible with the dog whistle crowd.

Araminta1003 · 14/01/2025 09:13

Presumably the bill re Quantitive Easing is all to do with trying to destroy Labour’s ability to get the economy going, should they have to resort to doing that and nought to do with what is in the best interests of the country. What I would like is criminal liability for politicians who cannot prove they put the country and taxpayer’s best interest above their own party political interests.

dontcallmelen · 14/01/2025 09:13

Another uneducated heathen here, although I do recognise a few words as my primary school teacher in what is now year six, would through out various Latin phrases during lessons & I can still remember some of the responses in a Latin Catholic mass, my BiL is a Franciscan monk learning Latin became very useful for him, does appear to be a strange decision to pull funding before the current cohort finish the course.
Cheguvara hope you are feeling a bit better💐

bombastix · 14/01/2025 09:26

Incidentally there is the hearing today for the lifting of restrictions on the judiciary who made decisions in the Sharif case. That will be heard in the Court of Appeal.

My hope is that they are lifted; and that some of the conclusions of Justice Williams are challenged.

The institutional blah that occurs in the family courts when a child is handed over to a man who a sadistic abuser has to stop if we are serious about tackling violence and abuse against children,

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 14/01/2025 09:40

Interested in the views of this group (as it's generally sensible).
I think Tulip Siddiq really ought to temporarily stand down from her position while an investigation is ongoing. Assuming she's cleared then back in role.
I work in a Government agency with a large number of security cleared staff (nothing exciting btw 🤣), and this would be normal for the organisation if there is a serious question hanging over somebody.
Why isn't this standard?

Agree - good luck to the guardian and other journalists in their appeal

“There are some places where, when people behave in that way, a mob turns up and burns their homes down, and then they know that they can’t do that sort of thing,” the Conservative leader told GB News.

What the hell? Does she not realise that this might be an impetus for some people to do something terrible. Astonishingly irresponsible language.

BIossomtoes · 14/01/2025 09:44

I agree @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats. it would make complete sense.

Maybe his dissing Farage was a gift to Farage ?

I do not think she should be in post.

I understand she has a close relationship with Starmer's family. But she should not have this position.

She reveals herself as the racist bandwagon jumper she is.

Stupid woman

BIWI · 14/01/2025 09:57

I was initially impressed when Tulip Siddiq referred herself - but then when I read more, and realised what her official position is, I was amazed that she wasn't taken out of post, at least temporarily.

Not a good look for TLP at all. Or Starmer.

Yep i ve had a few SC required jobs and any questions over probity would lead to delays and withdrawal of clearance, until decided upon.

However, it does appear that ministers aren't required to have these levels of security.

She has referred herself to the standards committee, that in itself should trigger a works suspension.

After all the uproar over gifts and expenses, you'd have thought Starmer might have learnt a thing or two.

They are not in opposition now.

SerendipityJane · 14/01/2025 10:05

I was ruminating last night that it's "interesting" that for all the votes we had in the July GE, it seems the votes of a few American citizens have had a far greater effect on life in the UK. The US choice of President Trump seems to have more bearing on the UKs political outlook than our own choice of Labour.

Possibly the same to a certain extent in France, Germany and Italy.

Since Latin has been mentioned, it's a little like back in 43AD when it really didn't matter what the locals in Britain decided - it was the decisions in Rome that shaped our lives far more.

I only recently learned that the reason Nero did not abandon Britain after Boudica was because too many rich Romans had invested so much in the project ...

The whole Roman conquest of Britain should give us pause for thought. It was a project driven by a weak President Emperor who took power in very strained circumstances and sold as necessary to secure the strategic interests of the US Rome backed by enormously wealthy businessmen nobles .

Ah well, as Lloyd Cole once sang

"I was working there on my great unfinished novel.
Please let me introduce myself, my name is Ronald*😳"

(Obviously I'd be able to quote someone who managed to smuggle "Truman Capopte" into a song on a debut album which also includes a line about "Looking for a rhyme for the New York Times".)

The trick with writing is that more people have to enjoy reading it than writing it. It also requires an amount of effort and rigour that I'm not prepared to invest 😀. Maybe in my dotage.

*Monty Pytonesque mutterings and questioning tone.
