What retailer do you think will go bust next?

My money is on Poundstretcher. Went into my local one today. Shelves empty, looking old and dirty and prices aren’t really cheap for a discount retailer…

Oh and it had summer toys out in it’s JANUARY sale 🤣🤣🤣. - times must be hard when that’s all you have to sell!

Boots & WH Smith would be my guesses. Although I think WHS is propped up by their monopoly presence at airports and motorway service stations.

anicecuppateaa · 12/01/2025 17:33

Agree WHSmith

MissyPants · 12/01/2025 17:38

Argos, never has anything in what you want, and both have closed down near me. Also don't see the point in it if you can just order from Amazon.
Agree to WH Smith as well.

LegoBingo · 12/01/2025 17:40

LUSH?
whsmiths will never close. It just keeps going and going fueled by hospital and train station branches

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 12/01/2025 17:41

I can't see it being WH Smith as they often the only place to buy snacks, magazines etc in train stations and smaller airports. They are ridiculously overpriced - I'm not a fan at all.

I'm amazed Boots keeps going but I'm guessing it's only because of the pharmacy side as the shelves in the one near me are nearly always low and many empty. Mine also had very dim lighting and is poorly staffed.

I wonder about the CO OP's future.

ReachingOut8 · 12/01/2025 17:42

I don’t think WHSmith would go as they have the post office in most of them (round here anyway)

MyDeepZebra · 12/01/2025 17:42

I keep getting offers and huge markdowns for Crew Clothing and my local one has closed. Last time I was getting these sort of emails it was from Ted Baker.

ReachingOut8 · 12/01/2025 17:43

I don’t understand how poundstretcher is still going

Boots is always really busy in our town. It’s only a small one but the only pharmacy. Not sure how people would manage for prescriptions if it shut.

HamHand · 12/01/2025 17:45

I think the White Company and White Stuff. Both send out way more emails they they used to and offer huge discounts throughout the year which sort of devalues the clothes in my eyes. White Stuff have had a few 40% off weekends. The quality just doesn’t justify the high prices they’re now charging, they’e be better off to lower it across the board then relying on so many sales to entice people to buy.

Why?

BananaSpanner · 12/01/2025 17:46

Fat face.

HenDoNot · 12/01/2025 17:47

Can’t go into an airport without seeing a WHS, and the one in my town has the only post office for miles around. I’d be surprised to see them go under.

Argos on the other hand…

HermioneWeasley · 12/01/2025 17:48

The Works I reckon

Adamante · 12/01/2025 17:48

I used to think Next because their clothes were just so awful season after season but in the past year or two things seem to have picked up, clothes are better, less fussiness and they added in Bath & Body Works which is a hugely popular brand where I live, I’m quite impressed, they must have a brilliant marketing team.

I think Hotel Chocolat are starting to decline, the prices have increased massively but the chocolates are not nearly as nice as they were. Won’t be the next one to go but they’re on their way imvho.

FuckOffCleanShirt · 12/01/2025 17:48

Argos.

Greentrilby · 12/01/2025 17:48

Boots made huge profits last year but is still looking for a buyer.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 12/01/2025 17:48

W H Smith will disappear from the High Street, those that have post Offices - the Post Office will relocate elsewhere.

HermioneWeasley · 12/01/2025 17:48

@HenDoNot Argos is owned by Sainsbury’s

I think all high street shops are in danger tbh. Often better prices and more choice by internet. I try to shop local whenever I can but sometimes it’s hard when you know you can get it cheaper on Amazon.
