My money is on Poundstretcher. Went into my local one today. Shelves empty, looking old and dirty and prices aren’t really cheap for a discount retailer…

@angela1952 sadly though Jolly's is shutting ( they were on a cheap lease) however the local Facebook fount of all knowledge says they have a taker for it - it's strange layout so think it would only really suit a department store but as they won't really have any competition apart from M&S which is kind of one - it would make sense- was hoping it would be JL but they don't seem to be expanding - maybe Fenwicks? It's a shame but as with all House of Fraser has suffered since Mike Ashley bought in - the guy is clueless on anything high end

The independent retailers in our area that do well have an excellent online presence, online shop, do local deliveries. They market themselves well.

Needmorelego · 13/01/2025 23:30

@anon666 "Went to TheWorks the other day, all complete crap. No proper books, just cheap "pseudo-books". Nothing I wanted at all."
What on earth does that mean?
They sell perfectly ordinary books.
Are books by authors like John Grisham, Anthony Horowitz, Sophie Kinsella, Enid Blyton, JK Rowling not "proper books"?
(few random ones off to the top of my head that are among the 100s of books The Works sell).
What a strange comment.

they’ve a cult fan base, was shocked to see queues outside on boxing day when I was out in town taking my baby for a walk.

if the sale is the same as when I worked there, it's understandable. anything Christmas range or older than a certain date, if you buy ANYTHING you can get it for free. that includes any large Christmas gift sets that are left. if you just buy a bit of soap, or a bath bomb or so on. so it's a big target for the sale shoppers.

> When I start seeing things that are in my wardrobe, lining the charity shop rails… I know it’s time to move them on!

You say they are well made and comfortable ... but you won't wear them any more?

What a terrible indictment of the consumer mentality

right. it comes over more like, oh, if a poor person is seen wearing it, it's not good enough anymore. as if anyone could tell whether they'd owned it from new or bought it from a charity shop.
I don't care what's in fashion. I care what I like the look of, and is comfortable, OR I like it enough to tolerate short term discomfort.

LUSH?
whsmiths will never close. It just keeps going and going fueled by hospital and train station branches

Yes Lush has gone very woke and is being boycotted by lots of people. It won't be helping their bottom line.

Snorlaxo · 13/01/2025 23:59

New Look
Pizza Express
Morrisons
Homebase

@MidnightPatrol it was Body Shop Online that closed. The stores were saved.

body shop online was the MLM side of the business. the home parties and pyramid selling and so on.

I liked Lush as a student but, politics and practises aside (I’m not a fan!), the Lush shopping experience before I boycotted it had become horrendous.

I’m ND…I don’t like people in my personal space rubbing products into my hand and not taking no for an answer. I don’t want to be bombarded with overly friendly questions and followed around the entire time I was in store. It was all so intense and intrusive. And an overstimulating nightmare. From a friend who had a horrific time working there, she told me that they are expected to have this approach with customers and were severely reprimanded by managers when they weren’t seen to be constantly engaging with customers and trying to upsell.

It’s a company that’s really lost it’s way imo.

Personally I think Matalan - used to be fab, but our local one has had floors half-empty the past few times I've been in.

I used to like Matalan but sometimes now there's a whole display and only two sizes! And they don't do size 8 shoes any more and I used to buy quite a lot from them, but no more.

Lush has always been very vocal about their ethics. this is not a new thing. I worked there for over a decade, and had to leave work quite some time back. and I was a fan for many years before that. nothing on that ethical stance has changed, trust me.
there are elements that to me don't feel like the old Lush, like the licensed product tie ins to films/tv etc.
but they've always been "woke" whatever you mean by that.

My partner always says the dresses are "ok if you're Amish" everytime we go up the escalator and pass the latest offerings.

Was it this monstrosity?

justasking111 · 14/01/2025 00:22

I can't use Lush the ingredients irritate my skin. Grandchildren aren't asking for it both girls get eczema so have to run everything past mum. Mums only like Chanel or Celine.

As a youngun I loved bodyshop buying bits. Japanese washing grains, their body oils, bronzing beads. Everything was simple but tempting. Wasn't too expensive either. Then boots , M&S started copying them, Anita sold out, products vanished, I lost interest.

Smiggle. I don't think I've ever seen anyone in there and I feel sorry for the solitary staff member sitting there all day

their stuff is fun, but SO expensive for what it is.

Whsmith is doing really well. Some things about magazines and stuff

Jelodah · 14/01/2025 00:31

This is a weird one but I do think undertakers are struggling because many people opt for straight to crem ,rather than having a funeral!!

They still need an undertaker though, but I guess the £1k undertaker fee for direct is a lot less profitable than a classic funeral. Good.

That dress has been reduced to £6.50 in my local store. I remember when it first came in and we were all out for a shopping day, I quite liked it and had envisaged myself wearing it with suede boots, a cream Afghan waistcoat and flicked out big curls.

My family, some of whom who were around in the actual 70s, were appalled.

I got,

”Don’t. You. DARE.”

And

”You’ll look like you’re in one of those American cults.”

And alas, my “Young Rebecca in This Is Us” dreams were shattered.

I can assure you Morrisons is going nowhere anytime soon. On average week takings is 200k, week before Christmas takings £500k December 23rd (single day) profit was £750k. In a small town 20 mins from Glasgow. One stores recent takings. 😉

You’ve used both ‘profit’ and ‘takings’ to describe the daily / weekly amount. They aren’t even close to the same thing.

A shop can have takings of £750k. If they have outgoings of £800k they are still making a loss.

I have no idea if Morrisons is profitable or not but what you have posted doesn’t say one way or the other.

It’s why it’s generally a sign a company is in trouble when they start bombarding people with money off offers (House of Fraser did it before they went into administration for example). They are desperate to get the takings up to buy more stock / service debt and they do it at the cost of profit.

Also, even if one store is doing well and making a profit, if 10 other stores in the chain are doing badly, they will drag the profitable store down with them. Again, I have no idea if this applies to Morrisons but it’s why with a big chain ‘my local store is busy’ tells you nothing.

Their hoodies are really good, and warm (I wear them to the gym). They also do some good quality cotton jumpers. You have to be selective with what you buy though.
