What retailer do you think will go bust next?

My money is on Poundstretcher. Went into my local one today. Shelves empty, looking old and dirty and prices aren’t really cheap for a discount retailer…

I wonder about Argos and Co-op.

And I agree with this. I think Hotel Chocolat are starting to decline, the prices have increased massively but the chocolates are not nearly as nice as they were. Won’t be the next one to go but they’re on their way imvho

Why?

Genuine question ....

They can fix minor car issues

Aren't they already gone?

DrRichardWebber · 12/01/2025 17:51

@Midlifecrisisxamillion Co-op is performing really well

Is it? I'm surprised. Crazy overpriced.

tailinthejam · 12/01/2025 17:33

Boots & WH Smith would be my guesses. Although I think WHS is propped up by their monopoly presence at airports and motorway service stations.

I'm amazed these two are still going. Both seem to be a rip off.

AmberZebra · 12/01/2025 17:52

I agree with Argos. I think Sainsbury’s will close the ones within Sainsbury’s stores and try to sell it off
It’s like a crap Amazon with added effort of having to go there.

leopardprintz · 12/01/2025 17:52

I thought Poundstretcher closed years ago. I am surprised New Look has survived, it’s like a boring jumble sale most of the time.

worcesterpear · 12/01/2025 17:52

I also think Boots and WH Smith. Our local Boots has no heating and has looked tatty for years, even though it is a fairly big branch. Our WH Smith has looked in decline for years, and now they have maybe one member of staff for the whole thing. Interested to know why people think the Co-op might go bust -is it that they have expanded too rapidly?

Needmorelego · 12/01/2025 17:53

I always feel sorry for Poundstretcher.
It seems to get ignored by so many people when it sells similar items to Poundland, One Beyond, Home Bargains etc.
There's a branch near where I live. Took over an empty Woolies (which had been empty for about 2 years).
A couple of years ago they were having a special promotion and someone posted about it on a local Facebook group.
The amount of comments of "where is this shop?" and "never heard of them".
It's right in the middle of our main road of shops (not very big road). Next to major bus stops, the library, walking route to a primary school and had been there for over a decade 😂
Anyway.....I can see the High Street branches of WHSmith going unless they seriously change their set up.

dynamiccactus · 12/01/2025 17:53

I hardly know Argos still exists as their standalone stores have gone. The only reason to order from them rather than Amazon is that you can potentially get something the same day.

Interesting comment on Crew Clothing - could well be the case.#

I can't see why Timpsons would disappear.

I don’t understand how Holland & Barrett is so ubiquitous on high streets.

Even now people are more into health & wellness… you can buy most of the stuff elsewhere.

Always seem to be empty too.

Toastyfeetbythefire · 12/01/2025 17:54

Edinburgh Woollen Mill.
who even shops there? I swear they’re money laundering rather than a real shop!
and Crew clothing. Over expensive, bland, again who shops there?

New Look is always rammed with young teens.
I can’t see them going under yet - H and M is far more jumble sale like.

I can't see it being WH Smith as they often the only place to buy snacks, magazines etc in train stations and smaller airports. They are ridiculously overpriced - I'm not a fan at all.

I'm amazed Boots keeps going but I'm guessing it's only because of the pharmacy side as the shelves in the one near me are nearly always low and many empty. Mine also had very dim lighting and is poorly staffed.

I wonder about the CO OP's future.

Boots closed their pharmacy at their store in the retail park near us. Confused

I avoid H&B because they always follow you round the shop asking if they can help.

Well maybe that's just me and I look dodgy!

I liked their advent calendar though - but I ordered that online.

MidnightPatrol · 12/01/2025 17:55

Oh also Robert Dyas - which buys things I can buy online for twice the price.

The WH Smith of the homewares world.

MissyPants · 12/01/2025 17:56

@clarkkentsglasses Halfords can't fix shit, they are overpriced arseholes.
I haven't got a good thing to say about them from all the ones I've been to.
Last time I went the guy "fixed" something - turns out he just secured it on with a zip tie. After I had been my partner checked the car as we don't trust them and that's when he saw it.
They charge way more than local unbranded garages. All you are paying for is a name.
The shop never has the thing you want in stock. Not around here anyway.

pizzaHeart · 12/01/2025 17:56

MyDeepZebra · 12/01/2025 17:42

I keep getting offers and huge markdowns for Crew Clothing and my local one has closed. Last time I was getting these sort of emails it was from Ted Baker.

I agree about Crew Clothing - its future doesn’t look promising.

I don’t think Boots will go bust . Its still very popular place, at least where I’m it’s relatively busy.

I didn't know EWM was still around, in the towns I know where it had a branch it has gone.

I actually get quite a few things in Robert Dyas!
