For the better, obviously.

Can be a thing, person, activity, place...anything really.

Mine is trig bagging. It's so much fun and gets you out there, to unexpected and unknown places.

What's yours?

It's a bit lame but - I downloaded a Spanish radio app on my TV so it feels like I'm on holiday

What's it called and is it available for iPhone ?

I want one so badly, im rubbish with rice and spend so much money on those micro packets ....
Are they really so simple.to use?

Really very simple. 1 or more scoops of rice into the cooking bowl (scoop provided), wash rice (rinse with water a few times), fill with water to appropriate line marking in cooking bowl, turn on rice cooker, [life happens], rice cooker beeps announcing it has made perfect rice.

I used to make good rice in a saucepan (both long and short grain), but this knocks me out of the park in terms of quality and ease.

I have an upstairs Shark and a downstairs Shark (and a downstairs Hetty) but I find that neither of the Sharks want to actually do the stairs. They each say it's the other's job. What do your Henrys say?

Oh believe me, it's been a perennial argument round here, lots of passive aggressive puffing and blowing going on.

I've just about managed to compromise on Upstairs Henry agreeing to do steps 14 to 8 and Downstairs Henry doing steps 7 to 1.

Heaven knows what would happen if we had an odd number, doesn't bear thinking about 😱

These are the ones I'm working my way through, nice and gentle because I'm over 60, but if you search Pilates there are loads on there to choose from.

There's an NHS channel that has pilates too. Search for NHS Pilates on YouTube then go to the NHS channel and it will offer pilates videos in the For You section.

Nordic woollen socks. My feet were always cold on winter days, but now they are toasty whatever the weather. And they don't itch!
And Uniqlo ultra warm long sleeve vests. So much warmer than my M and S ones.

Hoppingabout · 10/01/2025 21:33

I think one of those special potato mashers might change my life but I don't yet know as I haven't got one. Yet. I'm thinking of taking the plunge as I've seen them advertised though.

Picklewicklepickle · 10/01/2025 21:36

My heated throw is awesome, I WFH and it keeps me toasty all day then my DD steals it for the sofa in the evening although it’s big enough to share between us and DD2 as well. I also love my electric blanket, I get genuine joy from getting into a warm bed every night!

My new car lets you turn the climate control on via the app so I can defrost the car 10 mins before we leave, saves so much time/effort and it turns the heated seat on! (can you tell I hate being cold?! 😂)

Started carrying a single over the door hook in my coat pocket, so that if I'm in a public toilet with no hook on the door i can still hang up my coat and bag

That's a brilliant idea!

I cannot wait to do this when I get my new kitchen. The only cupboards will be under the sink and a larder unit. Everything else will be drawers and, at that, USABLE drawers.

My kitchen is 3.5m x 3.5m but how many drawers do I currently have? THREE! And two of those are more style over substance as they're about 8 inches deep on the front, but the inside useable space is only about 3 inches deep. As a result everything slide off the back of them and is a total pain in the arse!

In terms of what I've discovered over the last year that has massively helped is meal planning.

We use HelloFresh for 3 meals per week and then I plan the other 4. We have so much less food wastage as a result and it's ended up saving us quite a bit of money, even accounting for the cost of HF.

I used to very much be a "what do I feel like" cook, but I actually quite enjoy planning and looking forward to each dinner now.

@ElaborateCushion You can put cardboard boxes or fabric ones in the drawer that have the hight you need.

This! A "potato ricer"! It may have been around for hundreds of years but this is the first time I've ever seen one and I feel this is going to Revolutionise Everything!!

A place called Jaego's House in London. I don't even live in London but tracked there three times this week because you get three hours of crèche per day, reformer pilates classes, a really lovely co- working space, cosy lounge areas, soft play for the kids, there's an after school club, restaurant with affordable healthy options for parents AND children, a gym, other fitness classes, and just such a nice safe feel of being a parent and knowing you can relax. All for one monthly price, which doesn't work out too bad considering what you get included!

I had to take DD out of school because of SEN and bullying and it's been a life safer for keeping her happy and me having some time to myself. Just wish if found it years ago. She adores the crèche, keeps asking to go back in- they give the kids loads of attention and the ratio of 1:3 is amazing for all ages.

Pilates. I started doing an online class about six weeks ago and my niggly lower back/hip pain has all but gone. I have no idea why I put it off for so long! I think because I work a late shift so can't do classes in real life I just prevaricated, until I saw the NHS ones on YouTube and thought 'I'll have a go at that'. Brilliant. I no longer wake in the night with a nagging sciatic pain.

Which online course are you doing @Vroomfondleswaistcoat ? Sounds like something I could do with.

Mine is only a teeny tiny one… DP bought me some lovely new knives for Christmas, as I’d been moaning on for ages about my shabby old ones.

There was a veg peeler in the box - I’ve never even held one before (I’m the wrong side of 59 🫢 ). I’ve always used veg knives.

So I picked this peeler up and had a go…. Wow! What a discovery😁 My fridge is now full of boxes of peeled veg! The Ddog was treated to carroty ribbons in her dinner! Fabulous thing!

How did I get to my age and not know??

Which ones did you get? Would you mind linking please :)

tinofbeans · 10/01/2025 21:49

Vitamin D..

This time last year I was barely functional.. constantly exhausted, comfort eating, putting on weight.

I now feel like I'm back in my 20s, full of energy, I'm achieving 4x what I used to in a day and losing weight too.

Absolutely life changing and can't recommend it enough :-)

•DuoLingo, my DH gets so impressed when I overhear something and can roughly translate it! Spend a few months slowly learning Greek/Spanish/Russian/French/German... I'm now two years in and can't imagine stopping the habit anytime soon.
•Dehumidifier for drying clothes aswell as the house.
•AudioBooks
•Small Dishwasher- family of four (two older teens!) and it's so much better putting plates/cups/utensils in there while leaving only pans to hand wash. Breakfast clean up is a doddle.
•RoboVac
•Coffee Machine
•Lambswool Insoles. Only received them this morning, tried them in my slippers and haven't took them off all day! So toasty warm! Will save the other pair for my outdoor boots.
•White Company Essential Oils. They make the house smell amazing.
•Small carpet cleaner, it's meant for accidental spills etc but I do my full carpets with it, takes time but it's better than having a huge upright to store somewhere. Just fits on a shelf!
•Champneys Slumber diffusers upstairs, I can't smell them anymore but every now and again I get a phantom whiff, so surely they're still giving off scent and I'm just noseblind.

I love these happy miscellaneous things threads 🤣 I'm going to look into the exercise things mentioned too, so thanks for the inspiration.

I need to look into some of these...I already do Duolingo and from the rest of it, it sounds like we have the same needs in life 😂

Whyamilikethisbb · 10/01/2025 19:33

Me too - my robo vacuum / mop has changed how much my house used to annoy me in winter!

I have a weekly cleaner, but I also have a dog and muddy children. Despite a weekly deep clean, every day the downstairs hallway is muddy. But now, every day my robovac/mop cleans it all up!

Can I also ask you which make and model you've got? We tried the efuy before but it was defeated by dog hair.

YourFairCyanReader · 10/01/2025 20:42

Where do you get them from?

If you put 'packing cubes' into Amazon there are loads of different sets. Most of the sets have about several different sizes in each set, and the two sets we got were all different colours, so makes life so much easier. We've only three shelves to store all our clothes, so the cubes stack up neatly.

Having an upstairs Henry and a downstairs Henry.

Its lovely not having to lug Henry upstairs.

Why not just get a cordless Henry? Wish I could, my Henry is bloody useless on a flat surface 😂

Why would you be on the floor looking for pans? Don’t you hang them? How bizarre.

Why on earth is it “bizarre” that someone wouldn’t hang a pot?

Nothing “bizarre” about it, they might not have space, they might think it looks shit (I do).

That I am literally not responsible for everyone else's happiness - only my own....

Taytocrisps · 10/01/2025 21:59

Not recent exactly, because I bought it over a year ago, but I couldn't live without my electric blanket.

I like the look of that ricer too 😆

Yes I don't hang pots and pans. They have their own cupboard above the cooker.
