We went to a cafe yesterday
We got there at 2pm and as we walked in they said all they had left was jacket potato or prawn sandwiches /ham and egg pie
I said to my friend I will get the jacket potato as I don't like any of the other choices.
My friend she was getting the ham and egg pie.
She was stood in front
Then she said actually il get a potato instead
We got to the front and I said "can we get two jacket potatoes please"
The lady said they only had 1 left and my friend pipe up "oh il take that please with Tuna" what you going to get ?
I double check what they have and say again I don't like anything else so il just get a tea.

Then she sat there and smirked "oh can't believe they only had 1 left "

Wouldn't you have just had something else ? She liked pie
I would of just to be kind

@ueberlin2030 Schrödinger's potato?

Essentially, yes. It's only ever a potential option until you're actually ordering it.
I can't get that excited about a baked tattie tbh.

I can't believe anyone would spend a journey discussing what crummy food to eat.

Rude! Lots of people do exactly this

But it was there when she was ordering it - she ordered for both of them.

And actually as she was ordering for both of them, but had said she wanted the potato while the friend was originally going to have the pie, surely she’d “claimed” the potato ahead of her friend.

Regardless of what it is (and I tend to agree that a cafe baked potato is not something I can get too excited about), I don’t think OP’s friend was being a good friend on that occasion - and is also BVU to have tuna, as that’s rank on a jacket spud.

Why do they get to 'clearly state' they want it, when there's others in front of them though? You have to choose from what's available once it's your turn to be served, you can't lay claim to items!

It's just basic decency and common sense, if a friend says they'll have a particular item because they don't like anything else, to listen to them and make your choice based on that.
And it's also just basic decency and common sense not to sit with your friend once you've got the item, be able to see that they have no food, and not realise something's up.

Whether you aren't able to understand that, or understand and don't care, you've got serious issues.

I would have got something else but are you very fussy with food OP as that can be really waring. I work with a laddie who literally complains about everything & turns her nose up & comments on whatever you choose to eat as well

The only other choices were prawn sandwiches & ham and egg pie. Not liking those isn't particularly fussy IMO.
I like prawns but often cafe sandwiches are globs of cheap mayonnaise with a few tiny prawns, and lots of people don't like eggs and cafe pies can be a lot of pastry and not a lot of filling.
Hmmmm, maybe I'm fussy too!

Shesnotfromroundhere · 06/01/2025 15:05

I must have read the OPs post wrong.
Must have missed something crucial in it.
I read it and came to the conclusion that simple, her friend was selfish and inconsiderate and if she is like that in other ways and not just this one off jacket potato débâcle ,then why does she refer to her as a friend?

Is it not also basic decency not to declare that something is now yours and that nobody else can order it, when you're not actually even being served and there's people in front of you? Maybe OPs friend is sick of her fussiness and laying claim to certain things.

@ueberlin2030 It's got me wondering how many rammies the staff have to break up in the average week because of the much-ballyhooed last potato.

Shesnotfromroundhere · 06/01/2025 15:07

The pair of them must have been pretty hungry to stop at such a poorly stocked cafe and if they were that hungry then one of them was going to be a lot more hungry when they left , and it wouldn't be the friend.

Maybe OPs friend didn't like those either? Maybe she was sick of always having to let OP choose first?

Anyone else had a Jacket potato for lunch after reading this?

OP didn’t do that. They both said what they were going to have, which is normal for friends to do whilst queuing to buy food.

Nope. They're the least inspiring and most mouth scalding food around.

Why does OP get dibs on the potato though?

There seem to be some issues with comprehension here.

The OP said she would order the jacket potato before they knew there was only one left and nobody else could order it.

Eh? OP cannot lay claim to the potato if there is anyone, including her friend, in front. Her friend ordered first by stating what she wanted. Why does OP think she was entitled to the potato?

Choccyscofffy · 06/01/2025 15:13

nationalsausagefund · 06/01/2025 15:09

I think OP and her friend were cosplaying this near-identical thread from 2017:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3018172-Cafe-ran-out-of-food-friend-got-her-food-and-left-me-with-nothing-Aibu-to-be-angry?flipped=1

Either this friend has done this to multiple dining companions, or there are more baked potato cafe contretemps than we all realise.

That was 7 years ago, and the OP on that one did suggest going to another cafe, but the friend said no.

At least the OP of that one got up and left to get a Greggs.

's sake.

She didn't get dibs'; at the point when they both said what they'd like, no one knew there was only one potato left.

Lord have mercy. Can you just read what the person is saying? OP didn’t know there was just one potato left!

Enko · 06/01/2025 15:14

ueberlin2030 · 06/01/2025 14:53

OP says her friend was 'stood in front', suggesting she would be ordering before OP. Saying you want something while in the queue doesn't mean you'll get it once being served.

Edited

She also says they said "2.jacket.potatoes" so they ordered together. Friend knew op would not get any food if she took the potato.

Friend had already said she liked other items on the menu. This would not have put the Friend out. Only thing the Friend did here was show herself as selfish. She knew the op did not like the other options she did.

One of my close friends is Coeliac so when we go out to eat we use restaurants that can accommodate this. This is not always my favourite restaurant but they are decent enough and ensure we both have a good meal that.makes us both satisfied. Similar happens when I have lunch with vegetarian dd. Sometimes we put ourself out a little for those we care about.

What did she say when you said "Oh can I have the jacket because I don't like anything else and you said you would have the pie"?

I hate this passive aggressive twattishness.. the OP had clearly stated that she didn’t want or like anything else.
