We went to a cafe yesterday
We got there at 2pm and as we walked in they said all they had left was jacket potato or prawn sandwiches /ham and egg pie
I said to my friend I will get the jacket potato as I don't like any of the other choices.
My friend she was getting the ham and egg pie.
She was stood in front
Then she said actually il get a potato instead
We got to the front and I said "can we get two jacket potatoes please"
The lady said they only had 1 left and my friend pipe up "oh il take that please with Tuna" what you going to get ?
I double check what they have and say again I don't like anything else so il just get a tea.

Then she sat there and smirked "oh can't believe they only had 1 left "

Wouldn't you have just had something else ? She liked pie
I would of just to be kind

She ain't your friend........she is a spiteful cow! I would certainly NOT have stayed there with her; I would have left and found somewhere else to. enjoy my lunch, eating something I liked without her.

MarkWithaC · 06/01/2025 14:31

But anyway: she's either very very slow on the uptake or she was being spiteful. Which do you think it was, OP, as the person who knows her?
Whatever her motivation, the behaviour was really rude and heedless. In her shoes I'd have volunteered to have the pie or sandwich, or suggested we go somewhere else.

ueberlin2030 · 06/01/2025 14:18

Why is OP more entitled to the potato though?

Because her friend likes other things on the menu and she only liked the jacket potato? I don't think really about being entitled or not though, it is about how you treat friends. With friends most people try to be considerate and make sure they are also enjoying the time spent together. They aren't all out for themselves.

I think it must take a special kind of self-absorption to sit eating lunch in front of a friend who hasn't got any food because you ordered the last of what they liked for themselves...

It's about entitlement and ultimately nobody has more right to an item in a cafe than anyone else, especially if the other person is in front of them.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 06/01/2025 14:36

Why did you stay?! I’d have just said ‘enjoy your potato, I’m off to find something else’ and gone.

Shesnotfromroundhere · 06/01/2025 14:37

Well that's selfish for you, now you know, if you didn't already.

If it had been me well first of all I'd have looked for another place to eat!
I don't like the sound of anything they had on the menu myself.

What apart from that, if it had been me and that was the only place in town to grab a bite to eat, I would have taken a potato and cut it in half and if that's what we both wanted at least we each got half which would be fair.

sandyhappypeople · 06/01/2025 14:37

Not really the point. But what sort of cafe, can make up jacket potatoes from scratch with a choice of fillings, but can't make up a sandwich with a choice of fillings? I've actually never heard of cafe's only doing prepacked sandwiches, but making other food from fresh, especially if they are going to run out of jacket potatoes.

Did you not even ask if they would make you something up?

That’s totally besides the point. Would you do this to a friend ?

OK, no one is entitled to a potato. But a friend who you were out to eat with deliberately depriving you of your only good choice is a dick, entitled or otherwise.

Yes I would, but I’m of the generation that grew up without being in touch with everyone 24/7. To be honest, if someone blocked me I probably wouldn’t notice for a good couple of months

I'm of that generation too, but I never really think about blocking people. Partly because it's never been a 'thing' for me in the past, but mainly because I think it's childish. But we're all different.

Anyone who is in front of someone is entitled to choose what they want in a cafe.

It's the fact that the OP was there with who she considered to be a friend, who at the last minute changed her mind, thereby denying her friend the only choice she wanted which was the remaining potato, which incidentally makes me think that one remaining potato was probably semi warm, wrinkled skin, and probably not that good!
If she was a friend she would have shared the potato or forfeited it to her friend who didn't like egg and ham pie.

Do what?
Always check if they want something before I order it, even if I'm before them?
In all honesty I'd just suggest we went somewhere with better choices, if they're that fussy.

BobbyBiscuits · 06/01/2025 14:47

I would've said 'oh, I thought you were getting the pie? I can't have anything then? (Pause to see if she's relenting on the spud- tumbleweeds) In fact, let's go. There's another place up the road with a bigger selection'.
Then I'd just pretty much take her arm and direct us both out the door.
Unless you actively said 'I'm happy sitting with nothing while you eat' it should be obvious to her she was taking the piss.

No I mean order the last of something available after them clearly stating beforehand that they didn’t like anything else on the menu.

It was ordered together though. "2 jacket potatoes" and technically the "friend" was 2nd as she had said she wanted the potato 2nd not.1st.

It was 2pm on a Sunday, maybe they were closing soon.

So they literally had no other food at all that they couldn’t rustle up a sandwich or something?

Like I said, shite cafe. Bread/salad/sandwich fillings would keep until the next day.

Why do they get to 'clearly state' they want it, when there's others in front of them though? You have to choose from what's available once it's your turn to be served, you can't lay claim to items!

I worked in a cafe which had limited options (was part of a bigger store) - we could only offer/charge for standard items and later in the day we often had very limited/random choices available.

But a potato was available - OP ordered the two potatoes together. The “friend” then jumped in, despite knowing there was nothing else OP could eat. That’s selfish behaviour.

GreetingCeridwen · 06/01/2025 14:52

This all sounds exhausting.

OP says her friend was 'stood in front', suggesting she would be ordering before OP. Saying you want something while in the queue doesn't mean you'll get it once being served.

A potato was only potentially available - it's not actually available until you're being served and it's still there. 🤣

GreetingCeridwen · 06/01/2025 14:57

@ueberlin2030 Schrödinger's potato?

brokenwand · 06/01/2025 14:58

I would have got something else but are you very fussy with food OP as that can be really waring. I work with a laddie who literally complains about everything & turns her nose up & comments on whatever you choose to eat as well
