When they spend it, it all goes back into the economy regardless of what they spend it on. It doesn't mean that it's always a good thing - holidays are problematic for different reasons already explained in this thread.

I am very much in favour of taxing money as it (or the people having it) leaves the country (and taxing the very rich (note the 'very')) in general.

I’m also very up for taxing the very rich. And tax in general really as long as it’s progressive and used well. But spending on anything is better t(an off shoring/saving in terms of helping the economy.

AUDHD · 05/01/2025 12:34

Really don’t think that’s excessive. Most are in the U.K. We went to the Lake District last year for a long weekend and the accommodation cost us £150 hardly breaking the bank for 3 nights away

Silvertulips · 05/01/2025 08:42

Depends on perspective.

Holidays make her happy.

She can afford it, then why not.

You can get some great last min deals if you hold out - you’d be surprised how cost effective that is.

can you share your tip please? more info ..

But it is hurting others

If you had said everything without that comment I would have been fine - but that denial is killing us all, our children especially

It’s doing the square root of fuck all compared with other things. And done right it circulates money around various eco o ours, allowing people to have better lives. It’s like the Jain philosophy of sweeping the road ahead of you so as not to hurt an insect - admirable, but the hurt is so small that most of us don't hold ourselves to that standard.

liveforsummer · 05/01/2025 12:38

We used to travel like that but now dc have a pony so all the time and money goes there instead. I rent, I have never and will never own a property- I prioritised other things and don't have any regrets!

liveforsummer · 05/01/2025 12:40

MiddleAgedDread · 05/01/2025 09:25

If she’s still living with parents, paying no rent and moaning that she can’t afford her own place then I get your point and yes it’s probably excessive.
if she’s got a mortgage / rents her own place, puts money in her pension and savings every month and doesn’t have any debt then it’s up to her how she spends her disposable income (absolutely not justifying my own travel habits there too!!)

Surely it's up to her even if she does have some debt (most people do) or no savings. Pension is her choice as well?!

You have to be pretty spectacularly ignorant to go to go somewhere else and fail to take anything in.

Even going to another city in the UK you take on different accents, food, history, art that shaped the area. Hell other towns within the same area (Peterlee built in brutalism in the 1960s vs Durham a 1000 year old religious city) is culture and they are a 30 minute bus ride apart.

culture
/ˈkʌltʃə/

noun
noun: culture; plural noun: cultures
1.
the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.
"20th century popular culture"
2.
the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society.
"African-Caribbean culture"

Absolutely this, on one of our trips (to Hull) we learnt about the Hull patty and why the phone boxes are cream

I bet that woman in Leningrad didnt have a clue about either of those!

(and yes a trip in the UK is a holiday)

BellaVita · 05/01/2025 12:43

FFS you sound like a green eyed monster.

It is non of your business.

When you are travelling, you are not 'embracing' the world and cultures - you are just travelling, that is all. This is semblance, not substance. Maybe you are eating local food too, but that is not culture. The most cultured person I met, with impeccable English and French, was a 60-year old private guide in the Hermitage in Leningrad in the 1990s. She never left the USSR, never felt the need, she studied languages, literature and art in depth there. She changed my idea of what 'embracing the world' and 'learning about cultures' should be.

If people didn’t travel then those books on language, art and culture would never had reached that person in order for them to learn from them.

And you would have never met her and learned your life lesson from her.

There are many ways to embrace culture, and travel is certainly one of them.

viques · 05/01/2025 12:45

Cocktails!

The hussy, don’t worry, Jesus will have prepared a special place in hell for her. Extra hot, and no ice or little paper umbrellas available.

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/01/2025 12:52

@itssnowinginhere

Also…cocktails are great Op, you should try. Can’t beat a good Espresso martini or margarita 🍸

liveforsummer · 05/01/2025 12:52

To me the length of time, rather than the destination defines whether it's a holiday - 1-3 days break/trip but that's probably for another day

catmothertes1 · 05/01/2025 12:54

itssnowinginhere · 05/01/2025 09:48

She is 33 no kids
Up until 3 years ago we both cared for our late mum as a full time thing
So I get she probably wants to live a bit as we had no life for 10 years but like I say to me she should be saving.
She doesn't own a house,they only rent

Looks as if her going away a lot and not saving doesn't affect your own life at all.

Rosscameasdoody · 05/01/2025 12:54

I don’t understand what your issue is. Are you jealous, because that’s actually what it sounds like. Five breaks in this country - were they full blown holidays or just weekend/city breaks, and I know plenty of people who go abroad a few times a year. If they can afford it and aren’t hurting or inconveniencing anyone on the process, I really don’t see the problem.

JimmyHillsChin · 05/01/2025 12:59

Life is for living! I wish DH and I had travelled more before we had kids. Just let her get on with it.

LittleBigHead · 05/01/2025 13:03

Get a life OP.

2Hot2Handle · 05/01/2025 13:03

Wonderi · 05/01/2025 11:41

Perhaps she’s still saving and this is her going on fewer breaks.

As long as she can afford it, then it’s nothing to do with you or OP or anyone else.

I can guarantee that at least half of the people on here could easily do the same (maybe even you and OP) but some choose to not budget properly/waste their money on material things instead.

Of course it’s nothing to do with me. Nor to the OP (unless Dsis taps her up for money in the future). Nor to you. Just expressing my opinion as OP asked for it. Same as you’re doing. With the limited amount of info I have, I think she’d be better saving more. I’m not suggesting OP say anything, or do anything about it, though. I’m just agreeing with her.

It's a silly amount, because it's far too few
I take one break a month long haul or a weekend somewhere in Europe, plus 6-9 weekends away in the UK or Ireland
It's only 'excessive' if the people involved can't afford it

Cyclingmummy1 · 05/01/2025 13:04

No.

I think it's a fairly normal amount of time for a couple though the destinations wouldn't all be my choice.

snowmichael · 05/01/2025 13:05

itssnowinginhere · 05/01/2025 08:38

It's my sister
Ever since she met her partner (2 years ago ) she's away all the time
Including meals out /cocktails etc
I just think she could be using her money more sensible ,instead of holidays etc

Holidays and seeing the world, learning more about other countries and cultures, is a very sensible way to spend their money

2Hot2Handle · 05/01/2025 13:13

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/01/2025 11:36

@2Hot2Handle

not everyone’s life goal is property ownership you know

So true, I do know this. My personal opinion, though is that owning a property helps to protect your future, as your payments go down as you pay off the mortgage, while rent tends to go up. If you have the means to save and buy, I think it’s a good investment for your future.

northernlight20 · 05/01/2025 13:14

Jealousy is a horrible trait op. Unless shes asking you for money, its none of your business.

Scirocco · 05/01/2025 13:15

You get to use your money how you want. She gets to use her money how she wants.

TwistedWonder · 05/01/2025 13:18

Her money, her life, her choice.

You do you, let her do her
