I’m basing my response on the fact that OP says she’s renting. Going on fewer breaks away would make a significant difference to the amount that she could be saving, yet she’d still be getting to go away and enjoy holidays too.

Perhaps she’s still saving and this is her going on fewer breaks.

As long as she can afford it, then it’s nothing to do with you or OP or anyone else.

I can guarantee that at least half of the people on here could easily do the same (maybe even you and OP) but some choose to not budget properly/waste their money on material things instead.

Lack of charity is one of my concerns about this way of enjoying life. There's advice in the Bible to recent Christians who don't work: get a job - not so you can support yourself, but so you can help people in need. Yes, enjoy your life, but don't forget those worse off than you.

I think to a lot of people, charity is loose change or the odd tenner or even not thought about at all, but given most people in the world have no possibility of a lifestyle close to this, it's a good thing to also spend a serious amount of cash on lifting up people in poverty and healing the environment.

If you travel with a bit of care your money does up,ICT local people in the places you visit. And what do you mean ‘get a job’? The OPs sister has one doesn’t she? I’m retired from teaching, so I’m fairly comfortable I’ve uplifted plenty of people. I live a fairly low impact lifestyle normally. I’m happy with taking a few flights a year.
Also I’m not Christian.

It's my sister
Ever since she met her partner (2 years ago ) she's away all the time
Including meals out /cocktails etc
I just think she could be using her money more sensible ,instead of holidays etc

What’s your worry? is She in debt, or accumulating debt? is she missing statutory payments? What’s more sensible mean, what do yiu think she should do?

scotstars · 05/01/2025 11:42

Good for her long as she can afford it what's the harm!

I would have thought I had already made that fairly clear. If I thought that someone had actually earnt their money in a way that also benefited the rest of our society, I would be much less bothered what they then chose to spend it on.

Yes, you made that clear. I was asking why you would be less bothered in that case. Bothered they can make money in unethical ways - fine, I understand and share that bother. Bothered how that is spent? I don’t understand.

I go away about every six weeks. Sometimes 3/4 nights sometimes a week. I’m retired and single. If you have no ties when you’re young and you have the money do it , go everywhere you can. Enjoy life, have lots of experiences. None of us know when that will end.

This is absolutely my plan for retirement ❤️

Like what?

Spending money on holidays to travel and embrace the world and culture is one of the best things a person can do, along with having a family, embracing learning or building security... not everyone has to do all of these things (or all at once).

Some might prioritize travel while other prioritize education, then others prioritize family while another prioritize the property ladder/career/pension... some balance multiple while never getting the best of any.

If anything travel is the only one your likely to not be able to do later on as the others come with responsibility and travel requires freedom.

I recommend everyone travel as much as they can and suggest young people take gap years (even if circumstances mean thats only within their own country) while young.

I absolutely agree with this.

Why do you care it's her life and her money let her have fun

Maybe she doesn’t want to buy? It’s not compulsory. And having given up her 20s to caring responsibilities, maybe she (reasonably in my view) doesn’t want to put off having a bit of fun - especially given the fact a deposit is very, very difficult to gather in the current climate.

Ilovethatbear · 05/01/2025 11:45

@itssnowinginhere You and your sister chose to “put your lives on hold “ for ten years caring for your mother. That time has come to an end.

Your sister is making up for lost time. She has a partner and is travelling around, gaining new experiences.

My advice is to stop looking at her and look at yourself. What will your new life look like? How do you plan to spend your time and money?

HellsBells67 · 05/01/2025 11:47

I go away more than that, almost dying can give you such clarity on living your life while you still can.

Because one mitigates (a bit\mostly, depends on your point of view) the other?

Not at all. It’s presumably getting back into the economy to benefit others this way. Better than off shoring it.

itsjustbiology · 05/01/2025 11:49

Think its bloody fabulous..its called LIVING!

Effitall · 05/01/2025 11:50

Jealousy is an ugly emotion

Katbum · 05/01/2025 11:50

Last year we did: Austria, Hong Kong, Malta x 2, Greece, Portugal, Norfolk, Belgium, Devon, Margate,Glasgow… depends on your finances and priorities.

Well in that case you seem to agree about the balance that I was talking about: enjoy your life and help other people.

The "get a job" phrase was unimportant - I quoted it to say the Christian approach to money should be to earn it so that you can help others.

I only mentioned Christians because that post did which I was answering. Some Christians are hypocritical and that annoys me.

I'm sure most people on here are not Christians and I'm not interested in telling people in general how to live their lives.

Ohthatsabitshit · 05/01/2025 11:53

@itssnowinginhere do you own your house or “only rent”?

OnlyDespairRemains · 05/01/2025 11:54

cardibach · 05/01/2025 11:48

When they spend it, it all goes back into the economy regardless of what they spend it on. It doesn't mean that it's always a good thing - holidays are problematic for different reasons already explained in this thread.

I am very much in favour of taxing money as it (or the people having it) leaves the country (and taxing the very rich (note the 'very')) in general.

MajorCarolDanvers · 05/01/2025 08:40

Sounds fab and we travel about the same amount.

Yep - same here!

Corknut · 05/01/2025 11:55

We love holidays as we have stressful jobs and probably go away this much if not more. It’s just how we choose to spend our money, others spend their income differently.

MildredSauce · 05/01/2025 11:58

TWICE to the fleshpots of Newcastle!!!! How very dare they, @itssnowinginhere !

I'm always fascinated by contentious, fast boil and seemingly irrationally YYABVU posts like these. Do the ops think about the responses they get before they hit "post"??

Flossflower · 05/01/2025 11:58

I aspire to have this amount of holidays. Really it is none of your business.
