Super king bed

WidgetDigit2022 · 01/01/2025 20:30

Hi! So we’re finding our double too small and I’m looking and kings and super kings.

Beyond the measurements, are there any considerations you think I should be taking on board before purchasing?

Also - what are your views on fabric headboards? I’ve only ever had wood and I’m worried it may stain and get smelly over time, does that happen?!

Thanks

If you move it might be difficult to fit it in a room. We used to live in a townhouse with an open plan top floor and it was fine, but when we moved to a house with smaller rooms, it dominated the bedroom.

All I can say is….I’m very jealous! We have a king which I love. I would say, I always upsize the duvet to the next size up for comfort so we have a super king duvet but not sure you can get much bigger than a super king! Enjoy!

Really hard to get upstairs and through door frames

We could only find one model that would work for us, as the rest wouldn't fit

Changing the duvet cover really is a 2 man job. If you’ve got the room I’d definitely recommend it. DH and I have just returned from holiday where we had a double bed and I really did miss our superking. If we had a double at home we’d probably be in separate rooms by now 🤣

No issues with fabric headboard at all.

Same here, I have a king bed and a super king duvet

An electric underblanke, under the sheet and extra pillows. Love being in bed 😄

If you have room for one get a super king. We did and it is amazing!!! We are looking to move house and if it doesn’t fit into our new place it’s hardly the end of the world. It certainly hasn’t stopped us enjoying it now.

raindripp · 01/01/2025 20:40

We have a super king - it's fab! Was easy to get into the room (it's 60cm high at the base without mattress and the headboard is just under 1.8m), but I think it'll depend on your doors / stairs / angles. I don't find it too hard to change the bedding either.

Our headboard is fabric, it's almost 6 years old - not smelly at all! It gets hoovered regularly. Nothing is ever on it to stain it! It doesn't have any smell to, when I do the mattress cleaning with bicarb I also give the headboard the same treatment. Never had an issue with it!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 01/01/2025 20:40

We had a super king on holiday and it was lovely! Great for cosleeping with DS and when DD2 climbed in as well, it wasn’t all squashed. DD1 joined us in the morning and we all fit! Loved it!

We have a fabric headboard and it’s neither stained nor smelly.

KrazyboutKillian · 01/01/2025 20:42

If you have space get one , they are amazing , and you get a good nights sleep especially if you like your own space in bed .

the downside is you always pay the top price for bed linen ( obviously) as it’s the biggest size , and changing the bed is as pp said a two person job

but I love mine

tweddler · 01/01/2025 20:42

Superking with a single duvet each is the way.
Still lovely and cosy, but easier to change the bedding and less chance of waking the other in the night.

Mangocity · 01/01/2025 20:44

It's like having your own bed. If that's what you like, it's brilliant. You don't meet each other.

Scutterbug · 01/01/2025 20:44

We have a superking and love it! I echo the pp who said changing the linen is a two person job!

JC03745 · 01/01/2025 20:44

Currently in the process of buying new beds after a renovation and looking at superking. Previously, on a king, we used 2 quilts. DH used a lighter tog, whereas mine was heavier.

Ensure there is enough space to easily walk up both sides of the bed and fit a bedside table. Years ago we had a king size in a flat. The bed was great, but pushed against a wall, so I had to crawl in from the bottom of the bed, or crawl across DH to get in. (he got up earlier than me, otherwise we would have swapped places).

Another vote for super king bed, individual duvets.

Ha yes - my electric blanket is currently on heating my bed before I head up. I do an (internal) happy dance every time I get in 😆

Bambooozle · 01/01/2025 20:46

Super king is so much better than a king. Absolutely bliss to sleep on. Highly recommend using two single duvets instead of one big one though.

Find zip and link one , two single mattresses zipped together not a full one, very easy for when it needs relocating

KrazyboutKillian · 01/01/2025 20:48

Thanks to all for the suggestion of two singl duvets !
why didn’t I think of that solution

TheHangrySwan · 01/01/2025 20:48

My only complaint about a super king is that sometimes my husband is too far away to wallop him when he’s snoring.

HereLiesBetelgeuse · 01/01/2025 20:50

I have a super king and would never go back to a smaller bed.

We just have one superking duvet but I'm surprised by the posters saying two single duvets on the bed though, single duvet is tiny, surely it would be 2 doubles if having two?!

I could probably get on board with two double duvets instead of one big one. I'm short and struggle with the duvet changing

Wildywondrous · 01/01/2025 20:50

I wouldn't go back to a smaller bed, I love my king-size bed, we've got two single duvets on it which makes it easier to pick nice bedding as some don't come in SK plus dh likes a thinner quilt and he now can't pull it off me when he turns over like he used to with our king-size quilt.

We've got a double bed in our holiday lodge and it feels so small and dh seems really close to me whereas I like space to spread out.

Our headboard is fabric and has never become smelly or stained, I dont know what would ever make it smell? I just run the vac over it occasionally or wipe it with the cloth when I'm dusting same as i would with metal or wood.

fivebyfivebuffy · 01/01/2025 20:51

I have a super king to myself
Bedding is a lot cheaper than it used to be, even Asda sell it or dunelm and changing it isn't too hard

Talkinpeace · 01/01/2025 20:53

King (5 foot 6 wide)
and then make sure you have a 4 foot 6 double in another room for the nights when you need LOTS of space
and the German approach of separate duvets is not to be under rated

Firesideblanket · 01/01/2025 20:53

We have a speaking and second the not being able to reach DH to give him a nudge when he snores! I love the sense of space we have and don’t feel each other moving in the night.
Did originally get single duvets but dear god I hated them, I found the single duvet too small do moved to a double each.
As far as moving, out base comes apart and the mattress fits through door etc. I wouldn’t let the idea of it not fitting in another house put you off the joy of having one.

LottieMary · 01/01/2025 20:56

Every bed you ever sleep in again will be too small so on holidays you'll be longing for your own bed again 😂
