Do you believe it's bad luck to do laundry on new year's day?

The laundry situation is out of control in this house. I have a laundry mountain range (not just a mountain). I am not superstitious at all. And yet I just found myself thinking: "Well, I can't do any tomorrow as it 's bad luck." Think it may even have been on here I was first made aware of the superstition. Am I being silly not to do any laundry tomorrow?!

I don't do laundry on New Year's Day.
It's either done on Hogmanay or I wait until January 2nd.
I once made the mistake of doing laundry on NY's day and a relative died that year.
Scottish tradition 🙂

I never do laundry on new year's day. I'm not superstitious myself but my late grandmother always used to say it was bad luck so I sort of do it to "honour" her memory really.

There's only 2 of us so I don't need to do laundry daily anyway, I only do 4 ish loads a week.

No, but why risk it? Sit down with a book.

My gran used to say "start the year as you mean to go on", which in her world meant that the washing all had to be clean ironed, aired and put away on 31 December, so she could start the new year without a pile of washing waiting to be done, then she'd do all her washing on a weekly basis (she lived alone and didn't have a washing machine/tumble dryer, so hand washed everything).

I doubt it was anything to do with good or bad luck, just one of her own little sayings, that I practiced for many years, although, for the past several years, I've left the washing until the weekend after new year and I've not had any worse luck than I would have had if I'd done the washing a few days earlier.

No, but my late MiL did, and I never do laundry on New Year's Day. So you could say I am I am hedging my bets!😄

I have never heard of not doing the wash on NYD but my mother would never do it on a Sunday.

Thinking about it, NYD wasn’t a Bank Holiday until the UK joined the EU 1974. I used to work on the 1st January.

I didn’t do any and already I’ve got a shrunken brand new top my dd bought with her Xmas money to replace and a busted car window that will cost about £500 to fix 😭

CrowleyKitten · 09/01/2025 01:00

nope. I'm not superstitious about stuff like that. the calendar is entirely man made anyway. in a real sense, there's no actual difference between 12/31 and 1/1
I also believe in keeping your decorations up for as long as they lift your spirits, because January and February are so grey and miserable
