Do you believe it's bad luck to do laundry on new year's day?

The laundry situation is out of control in this house. I have a laundry mountain range (not just a mountain). I am not superstitious at all. And yet I just found myself thinking: "Well, I can't do any tomorrow as it 's bad luck." Think it may even have been on here I was first made aware of the superstition. Am I being silly not to do any laundry tomorrow?!

I think a lot of these superstitions arose from when women were cleaning and washing at home all the time and needed a day off from the daily grind.

I also suspect that New Year’s Day may have been a time for visitors. Having laundry drying isn't a great look.

My Mum said that my grandma was quite shocked when my Mum put a load on on Sunday.

Seacatt · 31/12/2024 17:19

No, I never gave it a thought.

I have washing in the machine and will be doing more tomorrow.

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 31/12/2024 17:20

No, I believe in the need for clean knickers.

WhatALoadofpickledOnions · 31/12/2024 17:21

Never ever heard of this, luckily I've done all of the laundry. Beds got changed today, and that's all washed as well. I treat it a bit like Christmas day, where i like all of these things done first.

abigaail · 31/12/2024 17:21

If you do laundry on New Year's Day you will wash a family member away according to my mum! I've been told this for the past 20+ years since I moved out of the family home. My daughter has moved into her own place and knows the rule too and I've just reminded her not to do any washing tomorrow (and I'm expecting a text from my mum any time now!) not superstitious but I go along with this one as my auntie did a load one New Year's Day and their dad died later that year. I give myself a day off from laundry so I don't get "the blame" should anyone happen to pass away during the year!

Sinkintotheswamp · 31/12/2024 17:21

Of course it's bad luck.

mum2jakie · 31/12/2024 17:25

Never heard this anywhere other than Mumsnet. I won't be doing any washing tomorrow though as we're predicted torrential rain in the midlands! I've done a load of bedding today while it was dry and windy.

SuperBlondie28 · 31/12/2024 17:26

I have a pure black cat. Had her since 2017. Crosses my path every day. I'm certainly not living a fantastic life due to good luck she's brought me 😂 She is lovely though and I don't have a bad life either..

I can't believe doing the washing on new years day would bring bad luck. If you need to do it, then do it I say OP.

Happy New Year!

Berlinlover · 31/12/2024 17:29

I wouldn’t even do a wash today because it’s New Years Day already in Australia and New Zealand. Yes, I know I sound insane but I’m recovering from cancer and tired of bad things happening to me.

SnoopySantaPaws · 31/12/2024 17:29

It's not worth the risk. 😉

sugarapplelane · 31/12/2024 17:37

My Aunt told me that there are 2 days if the year you shouldn’t do the laundry; Easter Sunday and New Years Day. She’s the type who would get annoyed if you did something that she doesn’t believe in. Fuck that for a game if soldiers. If there’s washing to do and it’s a good drying day outside then my washing will be on the line in New Years Day.

9GreenBottles · 31/12/2024 17:44

I not only won’t wash on New Year’s Day, everything that has been washed has to be dry, ironed if necessary, and put away before midnight. I rarely use the tumble drier but it’s been going most of the afternoon to ensure this. Knickers and socks are on the radiators airing properly and will be upstairs soon.

This is all part of a superstition/tradition instilled in my Scottish upbringing that the house had to be clean and tidy with all of the bins emptied before the new year. There will also be first footing with some form of bottled drink coming over the threshold after midnight even if I have to do it myself as there aren’t likely to be any tall, dark, handsome men to do it for me. Neither will there be any coal, although I suppose I could rummage in the garage for a bit of bbq charcoal.

I was telling a friend from Yorkshire about what I was up to, thinking it was just Scottish tradition, and it seems her mother had also instilled the no washing on New Year’s Day rule for her, along with eating a good dinner to ensure you would eat well all year.

Christmas Day, all bets are off! 😀

No I wouldn't be bothered by that superstition - however my birthday is the 13th :)

I do let the old year out and the new year in by opening the door - just as a nod to my beloved gran, not out of superstition.

I'm always opening and closing the door at around midnight anyway - we have cats.

Sadtosaythis · 31/12/2024 17:48

Look, my washing machine is on every single day unless I’m on holiday. One day off with this lot and I’m never gonna catch up so no bad luck old wives tales going on in my house. A wash a day keeps the piles away! (Sometimes two 🤣)…..

Zanatdy · 31/12/2024 17:49

Its complete rubbish

Gem359 · 31/12/2024 17:52

Silly nonsense.

The dictionary explains it as 'chance considered as a force that causes good or bad things to happen'.

If the good/bad thing happens then it was down to chance not good or bad luck.

Why would you perpetuate this nonsense if you're not even superstitious? Why would you encourage your daughter to think she has some control over whether someone dies or not based on (off all the ridiculous things) doing some washing?

thefedupdunlop · 31/12/2024 17:58

I have to do a wash every day, it stresses me having lots of laundry lying about.

Funkyslippers · 31/12/2024 18:01

I'd only ever heard it on here. Don't pay any attention to it. My brother even mentioned it so I told him not to be so silly

I'd just have extra to do the following day anyway

This. And you can guarantee someone in the family will do some washing, even if it's a distant relative

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 31/12/2024 18:06

Wash on New Year’s Day and you wash your year’s luck away.

i won’t be doing one but don’t remotely care what other people do.

Yellow2024 · 31/12/2024 18:07

Yes. If o have ever done any on NYD my washing machine always breaks so I do t even think about touching it now.

OliviaBenson101 · 31/12/2024 18:08

OMG I told my DH this earlier and he thought I'd made it up 😅

AuntieMarys · 31/12/2024 18:08

No

PoisonRain · 31/12/2024 18:11

Oh God, I hope not - we've both been ill so nothing has been done in this house for days. I need to do some washing and cleaning and the dogs are dying for a proper run, not that the weather is good for that tomorrow...
