Do you believe it's bad luck to do laundry on new year's day?

The laundry situation is out of control in this house. I have a laundry mountain range (not just a mountain). I am not superstitious at all. And yet I just found myself thinking: "Well, I can't do any tomorrow as it 's bad luck." Think it may even have been on here I was first made aware of the superstition. Am I being silly not to do any laundry tomorrow?!

No. There's no such thing as bad luck. But it's a day off so I wouldn't do it for that reason.

JM88Jen · 31/12/2024 19:08

I don't really believe that but I did as much washing as I could yesterday so have today, tomorrow and the next day to not look at the washing machine. We are a big family so it's a welcome break 😆

It's bad luck to do a washing on New Years Day. I have done extra today so I won't do any tomorrow, even though every day is normally a washing day! I've enough bad luck without inviting more.
Superstitious nonsense no doubt but 🤷‍♀️

Vax · 31/12/2024 19:17

Yes. You'll wash someone away

To be clear, you are saying that a loved one of OP will die because OP did her washing on NYD, yes?

I read it as washing away a friendship or acquaintance. Or a good hairdresser. Those are hard to find!

Terrribletwos · 31/12/2024 19:40

Superstition is just that Superstition. For e.g. a black cat crossing in front of you is considered lucky in some countries but unlucky in others. It would be interesting to know why that is.

PickledOwl1 · 31/12/2024 19:41

Wash on New Year's Day, wash a member of your family away ...

So no, I don't put a wash on on New Year's Day.

What a load of rubbish!

PickledOwl1 · 31/12/2024 19:45

@Parker231 well, yes. Obviously. All superstitions are aren't they?

But that's what my grandma always said and it's stuck. It's hardly difficult to just not wash on one day IF you respect your grandparents bonkers superstitions Grin

sometimesmovingforwards · 31/12/2024 19:48

I know someone who did washing last year on New Year's Day.
Put the machine on at 11am.
At 11.01am there was a huge clap of thunder and a grand piano fell onto her head.

CluelessAsFuck · 31/12/2024 19:51

Nah - machine is loaded and ready to rumble come 2025

Lol, made me laugh. Thank you.😁

YorkshireIndie · 31/12/2024 20:00

I know it is a superstition but I have been following it since my father was diagnosed with cancer and I just don't want to break the streak 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

Stanislas · 31/12/2024 20:03

Just put the last load of 2024 on and hope it washes the bloody awful year we’ve had away. I was brought up superstitious. Sweep your hearth and clear the sink, well stocked larder to start the new year right. Family from the Shetlands .

Wonderi · 31/12/2024 20:06

I’ve never heard of this!

I assume some exhausted woman came up with it one year to get out of doing laundry for one day and it got a bit out of hand.

avocadotofu · 31/12/2024 20:21

No! We too have lots of laundry that needs to be done and lll definitely be doing it.

Bananalanacake · 31/12/2024 20:37

I go through the pile and give back to my dd's clothes that aren't stained or stinky, I refuse to wash everything after one wear only, except underwear.

the80sweregreat · 31/12/2024 21:01

My late mil had a ' thing ' about this too
It's nonsense really , but maybe just ' an old wives tale!'?

Nonsense & an old wives' tale is the same thing

EveryDayisFriday · 31/12/2024 21:26

Nope luck isn't a thing. Just crack on with what you need to do.

Please would you clarify exactly what you mean. Use blunt language, no euphemisms. Thanks.

stargirl1701 · 31/12/2024 22:48

@WhoPutTheBomp

If you wash clothes on New Year's Day, you will directly kill someone in your family.
