Do you believe it's bad luck to do laundry on new year's day?

The laundry situation is out of control in this house. I have a laundry mountain range (not just a mountain). I am not superstitious at all. And yet I just found myself thinking: "Well, I can't do any tomorrow as it 's bad luck." Think it may even have been on here I was first made aware of the superstition. Am I being silly not to do any laundry tomorrow?!

Never heard of this, whether you do or don't do laundry tomorrow will make no difference to your luck.

BaronessBomburst · 31/12/2024 16:02

No.
DH runs, so there's sports kit to wash, and I usually change the tablecloth after the NYE buffet, so that's two loads.
We've been okay every year so far!

WalterdelaMare · 31/12/2024 16:03

No, don’t be daft.

WhoPutTheBomp · 31/12/2024 16:03

No of course it isn't courting bad luck to do laundry on any day.

Get it in that machine and don't pay any more mind to ridiculous superstitions.

Didntseeyouthere · 31/12/2024 16:03

Nope

dementedpixie · 31/12/2024 16:03

No i don't believe it's bad lack to do laundry on new years day and have done so in the past

Applepoop · 31/12/2024 16:04

wtf
no
i do it even on Christmas Day
family and dog
its needed!

Parker231 · 31/12/2024 16:04

No - of course not - doesn’t matter if you do laundry on any day - no different.

AlisonDonut · 31/12/2024 16:05

No of course not.

NoWordForFluffy · 31/12/2024 16:05

Nope, not at all. We're still catching up from the foggy weather which prevented outdoor drying last week. I've plans for a load overnight, as well as one in the morning.

Washing gets done when it's needed and can go out on the line here, regardless of date!

dementedpixie · 31/12/2024 16:06

There is a superstition that if you do a wash on new years day that you wash someone's life away. I dont believe that so I will wash clothes if required

MontyNojangles · 31/12/2024 16:06

My gran always said "wash one in, wash one out" on the last day of the year and the first day of the new year. It's an old superstition that many people won't know. But yes I've heard of it.

I still stick to it but don't tell anyone I'm crazy like that 😂

LoudPlumDog · 31/12/2024 16:07

Never heard of this, I’ve done it my whole adult life.

AuntieStella · 31/12/2024 16:08

Rationally, of course I know there's no connection.

But I still wouldn't do it

Just like I salute magpies, touch wood, throw spilled salt over my left shoulder, cross my fingers if walking under a ladder is unavoidable etc

What do you think will happen? We done multiple loads of laundry today (and also on Christmas Day). We’re away skiing and the washing machine seems to be on non stop.

NewYearNewName2025 · 31/12/2024 16:12

Never heard of this. Every day is annoyingly a laundry day at our house (except Xmas and Boxing day!)

MamOfTwo · 31/12/2024 16:15

Hah, thanks for the straight talking! I shall pay no heed and get it in the machine.

As others have mentioned, the superstition is if you wash on new year's day you a) wash away good fortune and/or b) wash away a loved one who may then die that year

Although having scanned replies, I now see it wasn't entirely unanimous. Hmm. Do you know what would probably help? To get off Mumsnet and do some laundry right here, right now rather than posting about whether I should do it tomorrow or not!

Even if the very worst luck bestowed me, I'm not going to look back and blame my laundry routine.

wendywoopywoo222 · 31/12/2024 16:25

Yes something I've been brought up with and won't risk it.

I've done all mine today.

AngelinaFibres · 31/12/2024 16:25

I expect some very sensible woman started that superstition when automatic washing machines hadn't been invented and she fancied a day off from the back breaking work of washing and drying by hand.

mollymazda · 31/12/2024 16:27

my DH does our laundry, and he had the washer on on christmas day.. i do not doubt for a minute it will be on tomorrow too.

stargirl1701 · 31/12/2024 16:28

No.

I have heard the saying but it is clearly daft.

May09Bump · 31/12/2024 16:30

No I wouldn't be bothered by that superstition - however my birthday is the 13th :)

I do let the old year out and the new year in by opening the door - just as a nod to my beloved gran, not out of superstition.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 31/12/2024 16:32

I only heard of this last year on here.

No.

If you need a counterpoint my family tradition is you eat something with honey on NYD so the year ahead is sweet.

Eating a honey cake can't hurt. There is no way doing a load of laundry washes away someone's life. Do both- maybe they will cancel each other out.
