Do you believe it's bad luck to do laundry on new year's day?

The laundry situation is out of control in this house. I have a laundry mountain range (not just a mountain). I am not superstitious at all. And yet I just found myself thinking: "Well, I can't do any tomorrow as it 's bad luck." Think it may even have been on here I was first made aware of the superstition. Am I being silly not to do any laundry tomorrow?!

I’m sure I read something about not sweeping the dust out of the room (or into the room?) on New Year’s Day for fear of sweeping out all the luck. Great - I can’t remember how it went. Oh well, I’m not planning on hoovering tomorrow anyway!

How come all you naysayers are so sure ?!

halfpasteleven · 31/12/2024 18:13

Have towels and bedding to do and weather promised dry tomorrow. Would it work if I washed them tonight before midnight then hung them out tomorrow?
That way I wouldn't be washing them- just drying them...

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 31/12/2024 18:13

I'm fairly superstitious but never heard of this. So no .

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 31/12/2024 18:13

I've been rushing around today to get it all done (4th load in!) I never knew why, but my mum was adamant about this! I have to do it today or she'll be birling in her grave!!!

Because I do washing every day of the year and most years I never hear of anyone I know dying. And even if I believed in it someone else in my family somewhere will still be doing their washing!

@Gem359
My mum would be mortified if we did any washing. But from my generation onwards it's all very lighthearted! We send the text "don't forget no washing on New Year's Day" or a quick phone call/mention it in person if we are together. It's very much an in joke and an eye roll situation. And the perfect excuse for one less job on the day. I'd never impose such ridiculous superstitions seriously and it wouldn't land that way anyway,we all have such a dark sense of humour! Smile

Sheknowsaboutme · 31/12/2024 18:17

Bollocks.

if its there do it.

BeeLight · 31/12/2024 18:17

No, the only thing that brings bad luck is bringing hawthorn into the house. Or damaging a fairy fort.

wigywhoo · 31/12/2024 18:20

Never wash laundry on New Year's Day - my mother never did. Not with the risk!

muddyford · 31/12/2024 18:20

If my washing machine hadn't gone pop on Sunday I would have been doing some.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 31/12/2024 18:22

I don’t believe it. But I still don’t wash on NYD.

MaryGreenhill · 31/12/2024 18:24

No of course not

TeabySea · 31/12/2024 18:26

No. I'm not superstitious. I am not doing any today as it's too windy to hang it out, plus people have already started letting off fireworks and I don't want bits all over it.
I'll review the situation tomorrow and dry things over the radiators if needed.

ExpensiveDecoration · 31/12/2024 18:26

I'd never heard of this till I joined MN (despite having Scottish parents) so yes, I will probably do laundry tomorrow, it's just a bank holiday and I didn't get round to doing any today.

Starlightstarbright4 · 31/12/2024 18:30

I won’t be doing any tomorrow , mainly as I have done 4 loads in the last 2 days and I am at work tomorrow.

I would happily wash if needed though .

if you have sooo much washing . I think any reduction is positive

Wherehavetheyallgone · 31/12/2024 18:33

Possibly some resourceful washerwomen made this up in tne past to get a well-deserved day off. Well done them!

But if you're in charge of your own destiny, wash your clothes whenever you like!!

Yes. Yes you are! Sorry, it's just daft. Mind you, my Grandmother wouldn't let me wash my hair when I had my period!

Dolallytats · 31/12/2024 18:54

I'm getting mine done tonight, I don't necessarily believe in it, but my mum does so I keep to it for her!!

Mydustymonstera · 31/12/2024 18:57

Hmm. I didn’t know of the superstition, but I ran a wash last NY day and my machine broke!! So on those grounds I’d say stay clear 😅

SockFluffInTheBath · 31/12/2024 18:58

I’ve washed everything today, I am forbidden from washing on new year’s day. Many years ago I did a wash and DH went nuts- wash on New Year’s Day, wash your family away (or some such tosh)- to which I replied ‘as long as it’s my dad, that will be fine’. He unexpectedly took ill and died that year, and DH has never got over the witchcraft in my washing machine 😅

lemonyellows · 31/12/2024 19:04

I have never heard of this. Where does this come from??

purplecorkheart · 31/12/2024 19:05

I only saw that it was bad luck somewhere on social media today.

I am hoping not as I have loads to do tomorrow. Not having had the best luck over the last few weeks but if it gets worst after doing laundry I will report back!

MontyNojangles · 31/12/2024 16:06

My gran always said "wash one in, wash one out" on the last day of the year and the first day of the new year. It's an old superstition that many people won't know. But yes I've heard of it.

I still stick to it but don't tell anyone I'm crazy like that 😂

Me too !

I don't know where it comes from but my grandmother used to say it and if she was still alive she's be well over 100 now so it's been around a very long fime
