Do you believe it's bad luck to do laundry on new year's day?

The laundry situation is out of control in this house. I have a laundry mountain range (not just a mountain). I am not superstitious at all. And yet I just found myself thinking: "Well, I can't do any tomorrow as it 's bad luck." Think it may even have been on here I was first made aware of the superstition. Am I being silly not to do any laundry tomorrow?!

When I hung out my washing today, I knew this question would come up, it does every year.

DreamW3aver · 31/12/2024 16:37

How do you think the universe links bad things to laundry? It's a ridiculous superstition with not even the tiniest but of logic 😁

bishbashboshjobsagoodun · 31/12/2024 16:38

My late DM and GM both adhered to this superstition religiously! However I have kids and my washer is on every day, regardless 🤷‍♀️ simply can't not do a load because of it.

Floralnomad · 31/12/2024 16:40

I’ve never heard of this , I’m not remotely superstitious and I’m doing the washing tomorrow .

I expect some very sensible woman started that superstition when automatic washing machines hadn't been invented and she fancied a day off from the back breaking work of washing and drying by hand.

Yes, this!

hobblingAlong · 31/12/2024 16:40

I think a lot of these superstitions arose from when women were cleaning and washing at home all the time and needed a day off from the daily grind.

Clearinguptheclutter · 31/12/2024 16:40

What! I refuse to do any laundry on Christmas Day or Boxing Day but do do laundry virtually every other day of the year, including NYD

Well I didn’t but I absolutely do now! Just me though, dh doesn’t know and I’m not telling him… happy new year me!

I've never heard that one but isn't luck by definition something brought about by chance, so how could your actions cause it?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 31/12/2024 16:46

I wrote a similar post on here last year about this as I’d read previously if you ‘wash on New Year’s Day you wash someone away’. I had to take the chance though. I am trying to get everything done today though but just so I can have a nothing day tomorrow. I think it’s probably an old superstition down to the washer woman not wanting to work New Year’s Day or something. That said last year wasn’t a great year work wise.

Nothatgingerpirate · 31/12/2024 16:47

😂

LlynTegid · 31/12/2024 16:47

Not one I have ever heard of.

I'd start a bit later than I would normally, given more people than usual will have been up well beyond midnight.

Sherrystrull · 31/12/2024 16:47

wendywoopywoo222 · 31/12/2024 16:25

Yes something I've been brought up with and won't risk it.

I've done all mine today.

Same for me. Washing on New Years Day means washing away the good luck for the coming year. It gives me a day off too so I'm all for it!

DarkAndTwisties · 31/12/2024 16:48

Of course not.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 31/12/2024 16:48

@MamOfTwo i really wish we all just had to wear throwaway clothes! washer on every bloody day and I have a himalaya sized pile of ironing which wont be done by next week never mind midnight tonight!

Craftycorvid · 31/12/2024 16:50

Never heard of this for New Year,s Day but have heard of it in reference to Good Friday. My old mum always said you’d ‘wash away a member of the family’ if you did laundry on Good Friday. She’d always do hers a day early. I’d ask her if you got to choose which family member to wash away, if so I’m interested! 😆

Crunchymum · 31/12/2024 16:52

I don't believe it's bad luck as such but I prefer not to do any washing on NYD (same goes for Easter Sunday / Christmas eve and day / my birthday). I prefer to have no washing on these days - not sure why but I always make sure the laundry is up to date so I am not even tempted just to chuck a load on.

MissFancyDay · 31/12/2024 16:55

I won't be. I also won't be washing dinner plates, cutting anything or arguing. I'm superstitious and it's something we've always done because it's fun.

I might even not bother to shower, there's always the next day 😄

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 31/12/2024 17:00

I have all laundry done by Hogmanay evening. I know logically that it's a superstition but I can't help myself! I blame my mum.

mumda · 31/12/2024 17:08

Yes. Now do your own washing.

I mean ... Not really but any excuse to not do chores.

My mum says you'll wash someone out of your life.

caramac04 · 31/12/2024 17:12

I’ve never done the laundry on NYD, logically it can’t bring bad luck. However, I washed the last few days and so it’s easy to not do so tomorrow.
You might actually feel better if you get some done. Not that I’m suggesting you do 😂

rosehipstalk · 31/12/2024 17:13

Apparently, if you wear a red Santa hat whilst doing it, it reverses the curse and brings you good luck.

There you go- you're welcome!

ObtuseMoose · 31/12/2024 17:17

As long as you sit under a table and eat twelve grapes at midnight tonight you can do whatever the duck you want tomorrow.

sdds15 · 31/12/2024 17:17

Does it apply to dishwashers too?
