Crime pays. Khan does not care

Fry is the convicted thief/fraudster not Khan.

ThatbloodyRoblox · 31/12/2024 21:10

I thought I may see some hate on here for Khan given the frothing of the media and some on X.
He is fairly successful not just with the 3mayoral and 3 MP terms.
He has done
a lot for better living re ULEZ

  • could be hated but makes for a more healthy life
Free school meals- why would anybody disagree with kids getting food? Much better on affordable/ social housing ? I think he has upped the SH considerably The transport- hopper/ Elizabeth etc. Not sure the previous Mayor could compare but happy to hear what Boris did
TizerorFizz · 31/12/2024 21:35

@Jabbabong I think you have missed the point. Both have 1 gold Olympic medal but not the same recognition.

TheHateIsNotGood · 31/12/2024 21:41

I always wondered why the very capable Emily Thornberry never made the Cabinet (curious to know how she pissed off the KS brigade); and ahaa, she's a Dame instead.

Still think David Beckham deserves a gong though.

So you are judging their careers and contributions solely on how many Olympic Gold medals they have won? You do realise that aside from the names 'World Championships' and 'Olympics' they are the same level of competition right?

Jabbabong · 31/12/2024 22:31

@TizerorFizz

Not to mention that Jess Ennis won a World Champs Gold a year after giving birth and then an Olympic Silver the year after! I think she is a damn inspiration and one of our all time great female athletes. Very much deserving of her DBE in my opinion!

Tarnishedbutton · 31/12/2024 22:42

Blimey reminds me of Opera, you get a OBE and you get a Dame, there given out like bloody sweets at Halloween.
Also glad Beckham hasn't got one he does my head in - don't know the fella I just don't like him.

She also put her head on the chopping block with the whole Ched Evans debacle and that is gong worthy imo.

To say “if you re-sign the convicted rapist (as Evans was at the time) then remove my name from the stand” took guts considering the nastiness that was going around over that case.

Bugbeau · 31/12/2024 22:43

The lovely man who owns the coffee stand at the station/tennis club in our village. It’s only him and he works at both depending on the time of day. He is so friendly and such a lovely part of our community.

What's a Gammon?

Something you have with pineapple.. well we did in the 70s 😁

peanutbuttertoasty · 31/12/2024 23:30

Knighthoods for leading a losing football team, and for the spiralling shittification of London. Jesus wept

TizerorFizz · 31/12/2024 23:47

You really should not get a Dame for saying what you think and many women give birth snd return to high level sport. God knows why that deserves anything. My point is she hadn’t had a lifetime of giving to others after her own career ended. Others have and had to wait to prove themselves. We did give gongs too easily and to some extent they have been reigned in.

Houseplanter · 31/12/2024 11:46

I think David Beckham should have been included.

Yes I know he's made mistakes but so have a lot of people; he's also done a huge amount of good.

I don't know what the criteria are; to me there are some really odd inclusions.

I dislike the Honours System in its current form, however given it's what we've got to recognise people publicly, I agree David Beckham should have had a Knighthood for services to football by now.

People should have moved on from those emails he sent to his agent from years ago asking why he hadn't had one years ago.

Love him or loathe him (and by extension Victoria), he has been in the game a loooong time, and I'm sure he was England captain for a good few years as well. No one can deny he raised the profile of the game hugely while he was playing, and has been influential in taking it to a wider audience (some may argue that was for his personal gain only, but he still did it).

I might even use the link in a PP to nominate him myself lol

Tell me more about the 'spiralling shittification' ? I live here and can see the improvements.
Also, it wasn't Khan who got rid of 20,000 police and hundreds of fire stations.

TizerorFizz · 01/01/2025 08:42

I’ll nominate myself for services to MN! Why not? Been on of for ages, prolific poster and did it after having babies? That’s good enough isn’t it?

@Jabbabong No one thinks the world athletics championships are the Olympics. No one. They are held every 2 years for a start with far less hype. Not multi games either. Paula Radcliffe MBE - gold for marathon at world championship. No olympic gold. Numerous marathons won and held world record. Just the MBE. .

itsgettingweird · 01/01/2025 09:06

I'm very happy for sportspeople to get MBEs and OBEs.

5 para swimmers awarded this year. All deserving.

Treaclewell · 01/01/2025 09:20

I'm a bit puzzled by all the comments about Khan. The only identifiable objection I've seen is ULEZ, and that is balanced by a supporter who thinks it's good. Locally someone says he's evil as though that is to be taken as read. I can't see that he is any worse than Boris, and with lists of what each is responsible for might argue that he is better. But evil? Where are his torture chambers, his abused women? His fraudulent acquisition of public funds for his own use? (Not implying that anyone else has had these either.)
AllI can see is 1) He's Labour. 2) He isn't white and 3) He's Muslim
If people have real political objections, specify them. Not unspecified "shittification" or you risk being thought of as racist.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 01/01/2025 09:25

Matt Cain 👏 👏 👏

westisbest1982 · 01/01/2025 09:34

The honours committee don't like tax dodgers, so it's understandable Beckham hasn't had a knighthood.

BlackBean2023 · 01/01/2025 09:37

Someone I know professionally and have worked very closely with has got a CBE this year.

They are the worst narcissistic bully I've ever met.

I'm not familiar with Beckham tax dodging, what has he done? Apart from when he played football abroad, hasn't he always lived in the UK???

I'm pretty sure Sir Lewis Hamilton (who I love by the way) lives in Monaco!

HellofromJohnCraven · 01/01/2025 10:02

I thought they were getting rid of the empire reference?
Its time for my annual listen to "In Recognition" by The Proclaimers which, as ever, beautifully sums up the hypocrisy around the rich and beautiful getting these rewards.

Boris Johnson has treated women with contempt or worse in his private life. Spent much of his mayoralty 'bonding over a love of Shakespeare' as his then mistress put it.

The political objections I have to the policies of Sadiq Khan are the closure of police stations and my belief that the Underground and bus service could be better.
