@spuddy4 For decades now the men’s football competitions have been significantly more competitive than the women’s competitions. Also the manager of the women’s team is Dutch. I do think Southgate did turn our fortunes around when up against intense and deep opposition, As the women’s game develops, it’s likely the quality will get deeper too so far more countries will have women’s teams.

I just think there’s huge inconsistency in sport awards. Has a darts player ever been a sir? Or what about a snooker player? Sport gets recognised immediately for some (athletes and rowers) and not at all for others, eg Daley Thompson? Has he turned one down? Nick Skelton not a Sir. He's been at the top for a lifetime! Hardly anyone who has an equine career gets anything. Adam Peaty just has an OBE in swimming. He’s achieved more than anyone else in swimming.

We have Dame Mary Berry but no Dame Delia? That seems odd. Who has probably had more influence on the nation’s cooking habits? Happy to be corrected if I’ve missed their gongs!

Delia will always be a Dame in my eyes C’mon let’s be’avin you

beguilingeyes · 31/12/2024 17:17

Sadiq Khan deserves his just for sacking Cressida Dick, IMO (although I think he's done a lot for London... free school meals, Superloop etc).
That woman should have been binned after Jean Charles de Menezes.

TizerorFizz · 31/12/2024 17:24

@beguilingeyes DAME Cressida Dick! Head of the Met is always a Sir or Dame. Why? For doing their job?

Scutterbug · 31/12/2024 17:27

A local woman who runs an art project got an MBE. She is so deserving.

dynamiccactus · 31/12/2024 17:44

Bluevelvetsofa · 31/12/2024 16:27

@dynamiccactus do we live in the same area? An ex MP who was never seen in the constituency, didn’t live there and never did anything useful in education.

Must be a different one as mine does at least live locally.

tobee · 31/12/2024 18:04

Surely that makes it likely Delia Smith has turned something down? She must have something, one of the honours?

MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 31/12/2024 18:12

Alan Titmarsch made me yawn with boredom. He's very active locally to where I live and is exceptionally boring and makes everything about him. I had the misfortune to go to a recent talk that he was hosting and he was very rude about the intellect of our community. He thought it was a joke- but it was a bit inappropriate to my mind.

braaaiiins · 31/12/2024 18:28

How tf does Pidcock get an OBE? Atherton is right there if it's an mountain bike thing and Thomas has been way more successful on the road.

16 time world champion Phil Taylor is probably the only candidate to be a sir but he has a criminal conviction and was stripped of his award before it was given.

There are others who have honours - same with snooker, just not a knighthood.

They do seem to have favourite sports- rugby football tennis and Olympians seem to feature heavily through the years.

IvysMum12 · 31/12/2024 18:41

Flatbellyfella · 31/12/2024 16:16

Giving Khan a knighthood devalues everyone else’s awards in my opinion.

This.

Fahdidahlia · 31/12/2024 18:43

Still Kevin Sinfield has been overlooked for the knighthood. Done a hell of a lot more both in terms of sport and charity work - MND awareness and funding than the other sportspeople on the list!

Pookyblert · 31/12/2024 12:32

Are there any benefits the people get? Like with freedom of the city etc

Generally not. I have an MBE, but no freedom of the City or ability to walk geese over London Bridge, sadly!
Great day at buck palace tho'!

pinkhimalayan · 31/12/2024 18:46

I'm happy for the Horizon scandal postmasters.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/12/2024 18:48

beguilingeyes · 31/12/2024 10:12

I'm looking forward to all the Gammons losing their shit over Sadiq Khan.

What's a Gammon?

TizerorFizz · 31/12/2024 19:36

@HappyDartsmas I didn’t know that about Phil Taylor. However we tend to award gongs in larger numbers in some sports than others. Years ago they had to wait a while to get them though. Mary Peters wasn’t a dame until 2000. 28 years after she won gold at the Olympics. Denise Lewis 23 years. Jessica Ennis Hill 5 years from her Olympic gold. Why do we get these anomalies? How often your face is on posters? What services to athletics when you have solely been training and competing? All these people do it for themselves and make us proud and happy but 5 years and just retired is not enough given back. It’s just a popularity contest.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/12/2024 18:48

What's a Gammon?

The sort of self-centred right-wing prick that's losing their shit over Sir Kahn.

Gammon with pineapple?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/12/2024 20:24

Gammon with pineapple?

That might explain their red faces and pained expressions.

Bloody Sadiq Khan! WHats he done to deserve one. Labour twat.

And dont get me started on olympians. Running in a circle and you're an MBE. Horseshit.

I can't stand him.

HJ40 · 31/12/2024 20:33

I agree with pp that the ones awarded for sport are grossly inconsistent.

I'm not fussed about Khan getting one. He's polarising as most politicians are, and I wasn't in the slightest bit anything but Tory until Brexit, but I can see he's trying to push through some genuinely good ideas and deals with a lot of out of order feedback.

Someone from my sport's community received one and it's great news. I'm so pleased a lifetime of volunteering has been recognised.

SmoothOperatorCarlosSainz · 31/12/2024 20:39

Ohhh I love seeing Martin Brundle on there ☺️

PickledOwl1 · 31/12/2024 20:39

Yes - Mikayla lives in my village and my son went to school with her. Well deserved

Vimaybe · 31/12/2024 20:45

I was pleased to see Jaqueline Wilson on there, I loved her books growing up.

@Pookyblert Freedom of a city is given by the city and mayor if they have one.

I have a huge problem with honours being given to well paid people just doing the job they are paid to do. That’s nearly everyone in the civil service and nhs and it should be stopped. Also get rid of the word “Empire”. We need to find another word! Eg British Service Medal or even use Commonwealth.

The sports ones mystify me. Jessica Ennis - 1 gold medal and Dame. Keely Hodgkinson - 1 gold medal and MBE. Why are some people in the same sport worth more than others? I feel no one should be a Dame until they are 50 and have put a lot back into sport. Or society. Other brilliant people have to do a hell of a lot more over a longer period.

"The sports ones mystify me. Jessica Ennis - 1 gold medal and Dame. Keely Hodgkinson - 1 gold medal and MBE."

Jessica Ennis
Olympic Gold in 2012
World Championship Golds in 2009, 2011 and 2015
World Indoor Championship Gold in 2010
And multiple World and European silver and bronze medals.

Keeley Hodgkinson
Multiple medals of all colours at World and European Level
Diamond League 800m champion 2021 and 2023
British 800m record holder
World best at 600m indoors
6th all time 800m

But yeah. There are plenty of other athletes who have done more than them in their sport. 🙄
